1966 Snub-nose C60 project
My new project is a 1966 Snub Nose C60 Grain truck. I found this truck by Kansas City, MO It has been kept in the barn all these years, has a 327 small block and runs great. This beauty is double framed and has a Tag Axle in back. I dont think there are many of these Snubbies left around. I was thinking of chopping the top 4" and lowering the truck as much as possible, sand blasting the frame, smoothing it out then shooting it with color. Powder coating the wheels and leaving the cab as is then putting some graphics of some kind on the door. I am thinking about pulling out the 4 speed with the optional PTO pump on the side, I was told this is worth some money, and putting in a beefed-up 700R4. I have already pulled tires and replaced them with 275/60/20s. Looking for the best way to lower, airbags maybe? Looking for ideas and advice.

Re: 1966 Snub-nose C60 project
This is pretty cool, do you have a plan for it?
I picked up a '56 tilt bed 2.5 ton this summer that will be a project for me once I retire. |
Re: 1966 Snub-nose C60 project
Yeah, well sort of. lol The guys and I are thinking about and making a plan. We have an idea of building a totally new drop axle for the front. And with the frame being as thick as it is, we can C-notch the front as well as the rear. the cab can be dropped about 8". It will take some work but I think we can get the frame on the ground. All that with an air ride setup, i think it will be totally cool!

i got one almost just like that only has a 366 in it and only has one axle its headed to china tho no one around here wants it and I bought it for the instument cluster the flasher and the door glass has a almost perfect passenger door but for the pickups you would have to weld the bottom front corner on it

I thought the doors and cab were basically the same. Did you happen to save the grill out of it? |

I'm not looking for one, but it does seem like there is a slight demand for them from time to time. I didn't figure you would scrap anything that someone might want anyway.

Re: 1966 Snub-nose C60 project
there was a guy a few weeks back looking for a front bumper for one of these... don't remember who though.

Re: 1966 Snub-nose C60 project
You guys do know that what your calling a "Snub Nose C60" is really a "LCF" or "Low Cab Forward", the model letter for these type of trucks is L, not C, so what you have is a L60 or L70 or L80...Unless you find one with a 6V53 diesel in it then its a U80. Just some info for ya to ponder.

Well, the build has been started. We pulled off the cab to give us room to get to everything. The motor is next. Once the frame is stripped the cutting begins! This thing is gonna sit with the frame on the ground!

Welcome to the board!
Looks like you're just in time to help us launch the Heavy Haulers! Subscribed and can't wait to follow along. :metal: |
Re: 1966 Snub-nose C60 project
The only thing that is worrisome is if the front axle will have to be narrowed, or a new one be built. I Dont think there is enough room under the fender as it is to have enough clearance to turn lock to lock when its riding low.

Re: 1966 Snub-nose C60 project
How are you planning on laying frame with the folid front axle?

Re: 1966 Snub-nose C60 project
for clearance isuses we are going to set the motor right behind the cab, all the "stuff" up front and under the hood gas, air, tanks anything that will fit. wanting ideas here. I could use the 327 it came with just clean it up- or go with something all together diffrent. LS with turbos, big block, skyes the limit here because there are no room restrictions and it is going to be "out there" ware everyone will see the handy work. I'm thinking cleaner the better hear, If a LS motor then it would have to be clutered pretty good. how bout the exhast ran forword and ran up throu the hood?

Re: 1966 Snub-nose C60 project
I like your concept renderings, but are you going with a c/10 front end, or are you staying with the snub nose sheetmetal, and running boards?
if you stay with the snub sheetmetal, and running boards, the cab/ frame won't have to go as low, but it will still look like it is... |
Re: 1966 Snub-nose C60 project
Welcome to the site. This is going to be an interesting build.
|
Re: 1966 Snub-nose C60 project
I guess it will be a Low Cab Forward when your done, I don't like what your doing but then thats what makes us all differant.
|
Re: 1966 Snub-nose C60 project
That's quite a "big" project. Just my opinion, but I think it would stand out more,be cooler, with the L cab as it is. Let it be the LCF that it is,not just another C cab.
|
Re: 1966 Snub-nose C60 project
Yes we are going to use the snub nose cab. The fenders are gonna get cut off and moved up some. We are planning on using the running boards as well. how much the fenders can be moved up will determine how low the cab will actually sit. The pics show a regular c series cab only because I couldn't find a snubby cab, the pics are screen shots from Google SketchUp.

Re: 1966 Snub-nose C60 project
The truck currently has a 327 in it that runs pretty good, the truck only has like 40k miles on it. We are considering 4 options for the power plant:
1# Use the 327 and mod it to use LS fuel injection. 2#Go with a Fuel injected Big Block. 3# Just swap it for a 6.0 LS 4# some scarry big caterpiller Diesel- or somthing totaly out of the box. We have access to all sorts of engine options here, we are throwing it all to the wall on this one and seeing what sticks. We are trying to stay away from a semi truck look, but are thinking stacks would look pretty sweet tucked inside the frame rails then just poking out from a hole just before the frame bend? let us have it -we want to hear it all. What do you all think? What your opinions on the engine? |
Re: 1966 Snub-nose C60 project
I think a big block would look better between the rails.

Re: 1966 Snub-nose C60 project
Scooter, You should look around for a front axle off a Volvo or Sterling car hauler, They already sit low, Might save some work.
