198Plus build
This a pretty wild story. I listed some parts on CL and 198Plus called me about my SWB step bed I had for sale. I told him about this forum and sent him a link to my build. He signed up and contacted me right away and said he was interested in me doing his truck.
Well, we met today. He is one cool dude. He bought my bed and a fender and left his other fender and doors with me. He told me of his experiences with bodyshops and it wasn't good. I'm sure he will chime in with more info. It was his Dad's truck I believe and wants to make a nice original driver out of it for weekend cruises. So for now I've got the bed, doors and fenders to work on and he will be bringing the cab in a couple of weeks. Here are some shots of what other shops have done to him. One shop swipped his good doors and gave these to him and not telling him. He said they were painted and all nice and shinny until further inspection. He had them blasted and this is what he found. http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...s/DSC00012.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...s/DSC00014.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...s/DSC00016.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...s/DSC00017.jpg This was impressive http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...s/DSC00025.jpg Check out the belly under the level http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...s/DSC00027.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...s/DSC00040.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...s/DSC00041.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...s/DSC00043.jpg Bent inner panel http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...s/DSC00047.jpg |
Re: 198Plus build by Alan's Classic
Alan, I just wanted to say thanks and it was nice meeting you.
I love the work you have done to your truck....Can't wait for mine to get finished it's been five years........Cough, Cough......Hope your working on mine LATE tonight...... Oh and by the way.......I can tell folks where not to take their truck too :banghead: |
Re: 198Plus build by Alan's Classic
Even from a distance, look at the body lines on Alan's truck in the background, nice and tight and the reflection of the light is one straight line. Very nice job Alan!

Re: 198Plus build by Alan's Classic
I've seen this type of work all to often. It's really frustrating the kind of crap work that so many businesses put out. Then to top it all off they take their sweet time and charge for a quality job.
You don't have anything to worry about now that Alan is on the project. He does top quality work. ;) |

Alan
Glad to see that you got some work, and it is not another miata...while looking at the pics, I was thinking the same thing about the doors, repops might be a better long term solution even though you can get these back in shape with your skills. 198plus Welcome to the board, your truck is in good hands. When Alan gets yours done, that will be 2 trucks he has made progress on in a short time, really makes me feel like a slacker... |
Re: 198Plus build by Alan's Classic
Good to see you got some work Alan! I cant wait to see this build up!
|
Re: 198Plus build by Alan's Classic
Good going Allan. You'll have some extra $$$ for your build. Now all you need is time to do both.

Tonight it took 2.5 hours to get the bed apart without destroying it. I had too torch 90% of the bolts and didn't mess anything up. http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...d/DSC00054.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...d/DSC00055.jpg For those that might need to know this is where the rear sill welds to the inner panels. Fleets are the same. My fleet had a tack on the top of the sill also. This one didn't. Remember the bed is upside down in the pic. http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...d/DSC00056.jpg Ready for the blaster http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...d/DSC00062.jpg 2.5 |
Re: 198Plus build by Alan's Classic
I have to vote against the re-pop doors. Being that Im not paying, I want to see you really work those things over to get 'em straight:lol:....I'm sure we'd all learn a thing or two.

Re: 198Plus build by Alan's Classic
More direct path for fuel. Less pressure deferential.
|
Re: 198Plus build by Alan's Classic
looks like a pain with a solid throttle linkage....
|
Re: 198Plus build by Alan's Classic
I'm using a pedal and cable from a 72
|
Re: 198Plus build by Alan's Classic

Re: 198Plus build by Alan's Classic
198 will pick up the bed and fenders Friday to go to the blaster. Nothing to work on tonight, so I worked on mine.
What has to be done to a 65 auto column for a power glide to work with a 3 spd auto if anything other than the indicator. Can the indicator be replaced with a different indicator? I'm curious if there is enough movement in the shifter to operate a 3 spd. Thanks |
Re: 198Plus build by Alan's Classic
everything I have read says there is plenty of movement to go with a 4 speed auto even...classic parts sells indicators

Re: 198Plus build by Alan's Classic
198Plus brought some sand blasted parts to me today. First I was going to spray DP90 on everything, but was thinking what a waste of material. So I started by circling damage and pounding out dents and welding up holes. I got rear fenders front/rear beat out and welded. The right fender will need a lower patch. After the metal work gets done I will coat with DP90 for now. Here are some pics.
http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...d/DSC00170.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...d/DSC00173.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...d/DSC00174.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...d/DSC00176.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...d/DSC00177.jpg It's amazing what people can hide with filler http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...d/DSC00181.jpg This is one of the areas that I beat out. http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...d/DSC00187.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...s/DSC00188.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...s/DSC00190.jpg Holes welded up. Instead of patching the holes in the front I just welded them up. There was enough metal there to weld too. 198 wants me to save him as much as I can. As long as I can get a good weld on it, it should last just as long as a patch. I spent 2 hours today http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...s/DSC00192.jpg 2+2=4 total |
Re: 198Plus build by Alan's Classic
great job.. I came to the same conclusion.... why spray DP if I am going to beat and grind it off... but I am in Texas were we have 100% humidity also. so i have to find a medium.

Re: 198Plus build by Alan's Classic
I had a truck one time that had a stop sign rivited to the floor.

Re: 198Plus build by Alan's Classic
My neighbor long time ago bought an old truck one day that was just painted. He was so happy til he close the door and heard something funny. he opened the door and a big chunk of filler fell out on the ground with a piece of aluminum foil stuck to it. I felt sorry for him.
I've also seen great stuff foam shaped to the contour of the panel and mudded over. I'm sure there are alot of similar stories around. |
Re: 198Plus build by Alan's Classic
Spent another 1.5 hrs welding up holes and beating dents out on the inner bed panels and worked on the RT front fender.

Re: 198Plus build by Alan's Classic
198 is this how you want your upper rails plugged?
http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...DSC00215-1.jpg |
Re: 198Plus build by Alan's Classic
I have seen the red dots from tail lights stuck in there.. Hey allan. another little trick is to go to the auto parts and get a freeze plug and tap it in. it sits in there nice. and if you weld it the bevel keeps the weld in tight so less grinding
