My 1962 C10 Build Thread "Grandpa's Truck "
2 Attachment(s)
I have been on this site a while just looking around thought it was time to start a build thread
This is my 1962 C10, long bed , small back window, my grandfather bought it new in 1962 custom ordered with a Corvette 283 and 4.11 posi, I have owned this truck since he passed away in May of 89 Truck is not undergoing a major rust repair/restoration but has the following, I did all these upgrades in the late 90s 1994 TPI Roller, 1995 700R4 w V6 torque converter(higher stall), power steering and front crossmember from a 72 with disks, power booster, 12 bolt rear end with 3.08 gears, front and rear sway bars, full Auto Meter gauge set up on a custom dash insert, 2001 Dodge Ram seats I just finished the major rust repairs including roof, rockers inner and outer, floors, fender lowers, cab corner, door jamb and front door post lowers, still have a few spots to fix but almost there Goal is to make this a nice driver, not a show truck but a truck that will run and last another 30 years |

Re: My 1962 C10 Build Thread "Grandpa's Truck "
You are a lucky man to have a vintage truck that also has family ties.
Grandpa would no doubt be proud of ya! Thanks for posting. |
Re: My 1962 C10 Build Thread "Grandpa's Truck "
You've got a cool truck and the family ties are awsome. My gmc has been in the family since it was a couple of years old so I know how that feels
looks like some quality repair too:metal: |
Re: My 1962 C10 Build Thread "Grandpa's Truck "
Very cool makes me want to get my 64 gmc out that was my great grandfathers and work on it again.:metal:
|
Re: My 1962 C10 Build Thread "Grandpa's Truck "
These Grandfather truck builds are the coolest.......My Grandfather bought mine new in 65, and passed it on to my Dad......Then after my Dad passed away, he left it to me.......Guess I'll leave mine to my son.
Anyway good luck with your build !!!!!!!!!!!! |
Re: My 1962 C10 Build Thread "Grandpa's Truck "
Glad to see more 62's on here!

Re: My 1962 C10 Build Thread "Grandpa's Truck "
looks really good, did you spray any kind of primer in that roof?

I treated the inside of the roof with metal etch, rinsed off and then used por 15 on everywhere I could reach, I even extended paint brushes with wood, I did not apply anything to the weld areas, por 15 really screws up the welds !! I was going to use the wax oil stuff after the truck was together from the visor holes and the dome light hole to make sure that it was all protected, the outside was treated with metal etch and then the drip rail was coated with 3 layers of Por 15 and then dusted with epoxy , I then coated the roof a few coats of high build epoxy, I am working outside so the rust will have its way if I don't do anything

Re: My 1962 C10 Build Thread "Grandpa's Truck "

Re: My 1962 C10 Build Thread "Grandpa's Truck "

Thanks for all the kind words about my old junker, I hope to have it together in a few months and ready to drive again, been sitting more or less for 8 years, always running but almost never driiven, I have done several projects before this one, its too bad I waited so long for this one, it had no rust in the floors back in High School, oh well I paid the price for that one...and then some
Here is another project in my garage 1960 Bugeye Sprite Twin Cam Totota 4AGE 20 Valve 170hp Megasquirt EFI managment Mazda Rx7 LSD disk brake custom front suspension/Toyota disk brakes/Datsun calipers Custom rear panhard, competition shocks and springs All metal rear fender flares there are alot of hours in this car repairing rust and body work, it was hit in the rear and shoved in about 6 inches, what you see now is repaired and just a skim coat of bondo....I hate final bodywork !! |

Here is what I started with, looks ok unless you know what you are looking at, been hit and bondo applied over 1 inch thick on the rh side still wet and I have known this car and owners for the last 17 years and they never did any body work !!, take a look at the tail lights ann turn lenses, they are all pointing different directions, I hope the truck will be in the part complete state like this one soon
This car had a 280hp 12A bridgeported rotary in it at this time,Dellorto 48mm would run 0-60 in 3.4 secs way too loud and hott !! at Hot August nights no one wanted to drive it !! |

Re: My 1962 C10 Build Thread "Grandpa's Truck "
I purchased a "rust free" roof from a 64 and used what I could of it, I used parts from 3 trucks to repair the rest of the rot , as far as I know no one makes any repair panels for the roof, I did see the visor panel above the window availible but that was all
|
Re: My 1962 C10 Build Thread "Grandpa's Truck "
Where'd you see the visor panel? I could use that.
|
Re: My 1962 C10 Build Thread "Grandpa's Truck "
LMC truck has the visor panel
|
Re: My 1962 C10 Build Thread "Grandpa's Truck "
You could also likely get it from MBGmike or Tri Pro Automotive. Both are vendors here on the forum.

Got my 98-01 Dodge Ram seats installed, wanted to get all the fab work done before I paint the inside of the cab, these seats were a huge pain in the ass to get to fit right, I cut down the seat risers, took 2 1/4 from the front and 1 1/4 from the rear to bring the seats down to the stock 62 chevy seat height, had to modify all 4 seat risers and shorten one by 2 1/2 inches and fab a new bracket for the center pull out cupholder, I made adaptor brackets for the 4 outer attachmets that use the stock seat holes and drilled 4 new ones for the center attachments, welded plates to the floor underside with studs ....alot of work to get to look right but hell...I got a good deal on the seat so it was worth the work I guess
its very comfortable and planty of room with the stock fuel tank installed still, I set it up at the same height and posotion as the stock seat, the lower seat is a bit longer but gives added support |

Got the front suspension cleaned and made a power steering adaptor plate, I set the power steering up over 20 years ago when I was a young hs kid, it was never right...this time I made adaptor plates for inside and outside the frame and installed spacer sleeves between the box frame, will add pics when I get them, I was dark tonight, got the RH bed side swapped out front bed panel swapped and the 15$ junkyard wood installed...its just cheapo pine but hey for 15$ it will work for a while, got the rear brakes and axle c clips replaced as well as axle seals
Got the Jeep door check installed too, test fitted to my crappy old doors but...they work great !! I filed the check strap down a bit at the end so it would fit betwen the factory bracket, others have said to bend it but...when you do that the mounting screws will not go in the jamb Trying to get this old truck back on the road to be my DD again |

Nice work so far!:metal:
i noticed on the interior side of the door where you have the holes for the speakers that the two body lines stop before. what did you do to change the ends of the body lines? |

I cut the rib in the center and re shaped the metal and welded it up, I did not really want to cut the holes but really there is no other way if you want decent sound and it gave me acess to clean and treat the rust and I actually Por 15 the inside of the doors and installed dynamat too |

Nice work on all the repairs and modifications. It may seem tedious now, but it's going to look great when your finished. Your family legacy will live on.

Re: My 1962 C10 Build Thread "Grandpa's Truck "
Looks Really good! Any chance you could do a step by step on the rocker replacement?
Thanks! Chris |

step one
was to remove the old rocker...I see alot of prople trying to grind and drill the spot welds out...this is a waste of time, cut the outer rocker in smaller pieces using a cutoff wheel or tin snips, as to make it easier to remove, the smaller pieces allow you to just twist and pull the spot welds loose, the panels I worry about distorting I take a flapp disk and grind the spot weld area down, the metal will turn blue very fast when its getting thin..then just use a chisel and a vise grip and pull the old metal off, along the lower rocker spot wekds cut the rocker so that just about 1/2 inch of teh rocker is there, then take your chisel and start between a pair of spot welds and start to roll the metal up with your vise grips like you are opening a tin can, rock the vise grips when you come to a spot weld and the spot weld will break, remember spot welds are only strong in multiples , a single one is very easy to break step 2 Grind and clean all loose rust and grind all spot welds down, clean and treat metal with metal etch, I used phosphoric acid and then treated al areas where I was not going to weld with POR15 Step 3 if you are just doing the rocker test fit and use a few screws to align it while you are working, be sure to have the door installed and adjusted before fitting the rocker , its very IMPORTANT to have the door installed, I had to massage the new rocker in the front where it slips over the pillar to fit perfect, if you are using a mig welder drill holes on the new rocker where the old one has spot welds, I used a spot welder along the lower seam, don,t weld anything till you are happy with the fit step 4 weld it up and grind to your liking then shoot with epoxy primer and then seam seal and another coat of epoxy If you are changing the inner rocker you will need to do that first, I fabbed the inner rocker and the repair panel for the kick panel and floor, I ordered a inner rocker from LMC and then Brothers and was not happy, the floor was rotted more than it would cover, and I did not want to buy a whole floor section...so I just fabbed it up, templates out of cardboard and then off to the brake with some 18 gauge Just be sure to fit everything before you weld anything, use sheet metal screws, the inner rocker goes on first and then the pillar support and then the outer rocker I will dig up more pics if I have them and post them for you |
