Johns66 15 year project.........
3 Attachment(s)
Finally getting back to the 66 Chevy longbed truck project I have had for about 15 years. Family, jobs, kids, job layoffs and a 65 Ford Mustang project have all postponed the truck resto.
The engine is a 69 350 bored 30 over, trying to figure out what to do for fuel delivery now. Have a power steering bracket from Captainfab. Pulleys and brackets are from a 72 Chevy pickup. Later model SI type alternator. Going to install an electric fan and put the temp probe in the thermostat housing I picked up that has a threaded hole in the top of it. 4 core brass radiator and running a short water pump. Have all new reproduction wiring harnesses. The hole in the drivers door is part of the 65 mustangs floor. The door was bashed in so I was trying to use what I had. The mustang was built for my son then last year he wanted to be married and had no money so he sold it back to me. John |

Seriously, it sounds like you have all the skills and know exactly what to do all by yourself. We're looking forward to more pics of the progress. Are you gonna go for a lowered or factory stance? Thanks for sharing. |

Here are some pictures of the automatic steering column before and after disassembly.
Since my shaft was worn out in the spot where the bearing fails, I am going to try using a 67-71 shaft in it. I will post pictures shortly of the painted tube reassembled later today. I need to find the upper bearing assembly with the turn signal cancel cam, before I can completely reassemble. |
Re: Johns66 15 year project.........
Sounds like you have a great build started,
Sub'd I have the same BBQ too. Right On! |
Re: Johns66 15 year project.........
Thanks,
I got back the radiator baffles, radiator support to hood pieces, steering column bracket and some other small pieces back from powder coat. I had painted the steering column, but I am going to have it powder coated along with the emergency brake lever. That way everything under the hood and dash will match the heater box which is also powder coated. Visited with the radiator shop yesterday and I am going to buy a heater core then have the end of the Harrison core I have put on it. This has been a trying year as the company I was working for just closed. Good news is I have time to go thru the garage sort some parts and get some things done to the truck and hopefully finish the Mustang. |
Re: Johns66 15 year project.........
Well, rather late than never.
I hope to be in Waco on the 27th to meet up with Rusty Escott. Will probably wave as we drive by. Shout if we can pop in and help. |
Re: Johns66 15 year project.........

Update:
I know it's about time, the last few weeks have been productive. Got both fenders, doors, grill surround and cowl pieces stripped. One of the fenders just got sealer but the doors, grill surround are in epoxy and the other fender will get epoxy this week. |
Re: Johns66 15 year project.........
Once I get the hood from where I'm storing it and get it stripped I will have the whole front clip primed.
I'll start stripping the bedside and get epoxy on those. I'm fortunate my metal is pretty straight and rust free. Truck will be cardinal red with top of cab in white. Going to have a chrome colored strip painted where the fleetside trim would go. |
Re: Johns66 15 year project.........
Good to see that your are getting the time to get back at it.

Here is a picture of my oldest daughter, so proud of her. Always wanted girls.....
Wish I could say she got her brains and looks from me, but that would not be true. Graduated number 25 out of 602 kids in high school. Of to college then med school. She informed me that she has "dibs" on the truck when I'm "gone..." lol... |
Re: Johns66 15 year project.........

Here are the latest pictures of what is in primer. No work on the truck this week.
Drive the hour 1 1/2 hours from Waco to Austin to see my daughter. She had jaw surgery to close up some cracks she has from her cleft palet. Dell Children's doctor did the surgery, they pulled bone from her hip. She is home now and doing well. My wife stayed with her the two days she was there. |
Re: Johns66 15 year project.........
I am happy that your daughter got through her surgery okay and is home and doing fine. Kids and family always comes first, truck is coming along nice.

It's been a busy few months sent oldest daughter to Dallas Baptist University in last fall. Moved my oldest son back to Dallas and middle son to Houston.
See picture of another bedside stripped going to epoxy. Started putting a skim coat of filler on the doors last week. I have to say that 3M 01131 is great filler. Does not clog the sandpaper and feathers nicely. I am planning on going to the swap meet in Dallas in April and taking all my extra doors grill surrounds and bedsides. |

Got the 87 cross member bolted on and the Captainfab power steering bracket on.
A mechanic at work helped me get the Detroit Tru Trac with the new 3:73 gears installed. Purchased a Mar K tailgate and had the back of the fenders, grill surround and cowl media blasted. Getting ready to sand the cab and mock up the body panels. Also bought LMC bedsides when I found out the originals were full of bondo and just too worn out. |
Re: Johns66 15 year project.........
Nice progress.

Progress on the floor and kick panel rust repair. Not perfect but I will be putting down sound deadening and carpet. Have to finish the welding next weekend.
Thinking about welding the joint where the upper and lower firewall meet. |
Re: Johns66 15 year project.........
Good work, this will be a solid cab again
|
Re: Johns66 15 year project.........
Glad to see you are still at it.
I've had my '65 for almost 39 years. Started on getting it road worthy in 2010 after sitting around since 1998, then life got in the way again. Got it LS swapped in 2016/2017 but the trans went out. Sat again till 2021 when I put in a different LS combo and started down the road worthy goal again. This month, l got it inspected to tile/register it (never had it titled in Texas when I moved back here from Florida in 2002). Now it sits in my driveway because it kills batteries... |

Re: Johns66 15 year project.........
The painters talked me out of a white top because the paint is a pearl tricoat.
Thanks to all on this board for the awesome info over the years that helped me get to where I am. |
