DURG's Black 65 C10
First time on the board here, but I'm sure I'll be back often. I just bought a 65 SWB BBW Fleet Custom Cab in 500AA Raven Black last night. Originally built in St. Louis, sold new at Harold Gwatney Chevrolet in Jacksonville Arkansas for 2154.00 I need to pick it up in a few days and bring it home.Truck now has a 327 small block with a turbo 350 tranny and 3.08 gears with a new Eaton posi.I spent the last 5 years doing my 62 Impala SS and now have the truck for my next project. Not sure which way to go with it yet and need to do lots of research. I've been looking at everything from mild static drops to the drop member setups and have no idea what I want yet. The Impala is a resto mod with full air ride rolling on 18 and 20 inch wheels with a 383 stroker, Tremec TKO 600 5 speed manula and a Ford 9" with an aluminum center section and 3.70 Tru Trac diff. Here are a couple pictures of the truck and Impala.

Re: DURG's Black 65 C10
Put that thing on the ground with the same wheels as the car and call them twins. Car is badass, truck is clean.

Re: DURG's Black 65 C10
Killer car and an excellent truck too! Good luck with how ever you decide to build her...

Re: DURG's Black 65 C10
Welcome to the forum :D
Awesome looking Impala. The truck looks pretty good. Do you have a plan for the truck yet |
Re: DURG's Black 65 C10
Great photo of a beautiful Impala. The truck looks to be in excellent condition no matter what direction you choose to take it.

Re: DURG's Black 65 C10
Nice car, rock N truck.

Re: DURG's Black 65 C10
Hello and :welcoem: to the board !!
I have to echo the comments on your Impala! The 62 and 63s I think were among my faves, and it is nice to see someone with a car interest as well. I cannot wait to get home and spend some time with my Tempest this summer! Hope you have fun with your truck, like has already been hinted at, they are going to look sweet side by side ! |
Re: DURG's Black 65 C10
First things first. I have ordered the Coys C-5 Gray wheels in 20" and 22" that match the Impala. The wheels on the truck now are 6 lug 16" Wheelvintiques powdercoated black with their centers. They will make someone a nice set when I no longer need them. Talked to Porterbuilt last night and I am leaning toward their coilover optioned dropmember and four link setup. I put a stock steering wheel back on for now too.
|
Re: DURG's Black 65 C10
Looks like I will be going with the Touring front coil over Dropmember with a four link rear coilover setup from Porterbuilt. Trying to finalize specifics with Nate now. Damn shipping from Arizona to Maine on this heavy stuff is a killer. I'll be looking for a high hump with the mating firewall piece too.

Re: DURG's Black 65 C10
Nice Impala! I dig the new truck, and the interior looks to be in great shape. Look forward to seeing progress on this build.
|
Re: DURG's Black 65 C10
Good luck with the Porterbuilt swap....yes, shipping sure can hurt when it is a long distance away....it will be an awesome ride when you get it done.
|
Re: DURG's Black 65 C10
Just got off the phone with Porterbuilt. Order is placed for the Touring front Dropmember with coil overs and the four link rear with coil overs. Also ordered the rack and pinion, all the tubular a-arms, sway bar, and coil overs and springs. I'm still not planning the tear down until fall though. Frame height should be around six inches with CPP Modular drop spindles and my 20" and 22" wheels.

A couple really nice rides there, Welcome!

Re: DURG's Black 65 C10
I started pulling the truck apart in anticipation of getting all the new parts. I will post a ton of pictures as most seem to like the pictures. Some will be very basic disassy pix but some guys really like that kind of stuff too.

Re: DURG's Black 65 C10
I've read alot of the posts about taking out the rivets in the various crossmembers and mounts. I just step drilled the holes and they punched out fairly easily.
These photos shows the progression: http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/d...y7-4-12039.jpg http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/d...y7-4-12040.jpg |
Re: DURG's Black 65 C10
She was born with a low hump, but I have a high one located and I believe I am getting the 62 Hydraglide style bolt in front section as well.

Re: DURG's Black 65 C10
I just [popped out the six lug axles and have the Moser 5 lugs on the way as well as a Wilwood rear disc setup.

Re: DURG's Black 65 C10
I am impressed with the condition of this truck. Very few surprises during disassy. No more rust than I already knew about which is not much. All the hardware came apart nicely.
Stuff I either have ordered or already here: Porterbuilt front touring coilover clip with tubular a-arms, sway bar, and Porterbuilt 4 link rear ordered. Nate already had the Ride Tech adjustible coilovers, Hyperco springs, Unisteer power rack drop shipped. I have the CPP modular spindles and I have ordered the Moser 5 lug axles and the Wilwood rear brake setup. I also have my Nitto 555 tires and am waiting on the Coy's C-5 wheels. 22" and 20" in the regular gray and machined. |
Re: DURG's Black 65 C10
Very nice truck !!!!!

Re: DURG's Black 65 C10
Hey Durg, Were there any rubber pads between the bed rails and the frame when you took it apart? Also where did you find the high hump? Local?
|
Re: DURG's Black 65 C10
No rubber pads. Metal to metal. The high hump is coming from Washington state. I am supposed to be getting the bolt in mating piece and the firewall that I believe comes out of a '62 with the Hydraglide style tranny. I got a couple high humps already but they are rusted and I was going to have to cut them up to make one decent one. I have the mating piece I cut out of the firewall which also needs a little work on the left side due to rust.

Re: DURG's Black 65 C10
Well i moved the old crossmember out back. I don't imagine there is much of a market for this stuff?
http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/d...durgin/002.jpg I needed to remove the truck arm mounts from the rear end tubes to make way for the new Porterbuilt 4 link mounts. Got that done and then blasted the housing nice and clean. http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/d...durgin/004.jpg http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/d...durgin/007.jpg Blasted the frame today too. What a ***** in this heat! http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/d...durgin/006.jpg http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/d...durgin/005.jpg |
Re: DURG's Black 65 C10
Fire last night in the fire pit with 47 year old genuine Chevrolet truck bed wood!

Re: DURG's Black 65 C10
Installed new bearings and seals and slid the Moser axles in so I could verify fitment of the Wilwood rear brake setup.

Re: DURG's Black 65 C10
Hey Durg, What do you have for a sandblaster? Mine would have taken a month of Sundays to do a frame and rear end. I think I need to upgrade.

[QUOTE=DURG;5469513]http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/d...y7-4-12021.jpg
Anybody know why the grease pencil markings are always upside down from the factory? Answer: Because the truck frames always came down the line upside down and the suspension components were lowered from above. The workers would ID the chassis with grease pencils for accountability. Right before the cab and frame were mated, they would flip the frame right-side up. If this truck turns out half as nice as the '62 Impala, it's going to be amazing. I'll be tuning in for this build. You obviously have this stuff figured out. |
