I will put together a build thread . This will be my forged 383 set up with 150 in the fogger and 150 in the plate to start with .

Re: New project

Found out last night that the block needed 2 sleexes at .030 and 1 at .040 . I spent $670 on SRP pro series pistons , so 2 sleeves it is . I m also dropping off the cam for clearencing tomorrow . Crower sportsman rods and eagle lightweight 4340 crank all balanced . My neighbor came over yesterday and ask if i would help him haul off an old transmission . Turns out it is a 73' TH 350 out of his truck . He had the dealership rebuild it and the service tech talked him into a 700r4 swap and did it as a side job . Turns out the trans has only been sitting 3 years and has low miles . I'll shoot some pics of the current state of the motor and try and update .

wouldn't it be much cheaper to find another block?

Well i ask about that . The yard i got the block from doesn't have anymore 4 bolts and they only exchange . I would have to drop back to a 2 bolt main . I made 484 with this top end on a 355 . I don't expect alot more HP , but more torque and the assembly should handle 800 HP . So close to 500 on motor and 250 more nitrous , i need a 4 bolt . My machinist ( a good friend and a high school buddy ) has assured me i will never know it is there and i have run his sleeves before with no problems . Oh , and there is no S-10 build section so i put it here . Hope you don't mind as my primary purpose is to drag race it .

Visual update for saturday .Sorry for the crappy pick of the block it was in the bore machine . Pics of the lightweight forged crank and JE pro series pistons .

Having a good buddy as a machinist, could have got a 2bolt and had him splay it. Would be better then any stock 4bolt. What ever happened to that 396 you built?

Im going to call him bout that as i have a 2 bolt main in his shop that is 4" and never been bored . That would be alot better than the sleeved 4 bolt . Really should have bought an aftermarket block , but then i would end up with a big inch small block , which isn't a bad thing . I mean i already bought good stuff . The price would have been the same all i needed was a block . Kinda stuck with a 383 now or start from scratch .

I sold the 396 with the Luv . The guys that bought the truck are strictly grudge racers so im hesitant to discuss it as it is their race program now . I will tell you that is runs good and is out of the Houston area . The truck has been repainted as the new owners have a body shop . They just bought a proven combo with all my notes and repainted it and showed up in a different area as unknowns .

It would move around due to the short wheelbase , but i think it made me better as a driver . The truck really reacted to "jerk shift" and the break over point or point of no return ( when sideways) was quicker than a longer truck . Tire pressure was pretty critical as sidewall flex was important . The truck didn't have power steering so you either had to man handle it , chop it ONCE , or lift . Most of the time i would just make the shift and the loss of torque would bring it back in line even if i shifted early . It was a fun truck .

Got the new rim combo on the gray truck today and did a suspention lookover .

I ended up listing the old body for my golf cart on Craigslist and the guy who is to replace the ends on my 9" shows up to buy it . Well a little horse trading and he is going to replace the ends on one housing and narrow another housing for the golf cart body .
Ordered the converter and dropped of the trans local for a rebuild . Here's a link to the converter . Hoping i didn't go to tight , but still street worthy .
http://transmission-specialties.com/...products_id=56
Also looking for opinions on this companies converters . Going parts hunting tommorow also .

Re: New project

My Machinist called me this afternoon and told me he just knocked the last piston in it . I usually assemble them ( motors) , but i think He's pretty proud of this one . This is one of the best pieces i have ever built . He said the deck was so far off his machine couldn't cut it . It was .018 in the front and .031 in the rear . It's zero now . Told me bring the rest of the stuff and we'll finish it up sometime this week . Matt called me this afternoon and told me Kenny Hubbard (another local all around good guy) is ready to build the trans , so i gotta haul that to him coming up . Been working on small stuff like pre plan for radiator . Researching the A/C parts needed to convert to 134A . Also got all the stuff together to build Rick's center section . Looking like i will have some time next week to relax and get busy . This type of work is relaxing and gives me a sense of acomplishment .

you are putting air on the race truck?

hotrod 80 05-25-2010 09:09 AM

Re: New project

Yea , it has air , so im keeping it . It will see some street duty with drag radials and it's light enough those couple of extra pounds won't hurt to much + im getting older . Hopefully i have enough vacuum for power brakes .

Re: New project

Not much of an update , but a new picture . i welded up the oil pump pickup and installed the pan . Got a new copper washer for the oil plug . The heads are on and torqued . Timing chain cover wasn't my first choice , but i had it and it was new in the box . Hoping to have the intake and valve train buttoned up by the end of the weekend . Headers and mounts should be here soon . Plaining the install the weekend of the 25th .

What the specs on your heads?

And what induction you gonna be running?

hotrod 80 06-11-2010 04:28 PM

Re: New project

The heads are GM fastburns (210 cc intake runners )that are rolled a touch ;) . I had them for a class i used to run that required a 23 degree head . Out of the box they will support 500 hp . These have had some touch up in the way of polishing and severe duty valve installed . Quench ended up being .041 , which is within the gap but a little bigger than i wanted . Compression should be 10.2-10.3 to 1 . They are raised runner and the Edelbrock rpm air gap is port matched . I would run a single plane , but a victor won't work with these heads due to the raised runner ( .210 i think ) plus i would have to have a new intake ported and this is only a "street truck" I will be topping that off with a cheater plate and 750 speed demon . This will be my 4th speed demon and i have never had a problem . Might step up to a custom built carb later .

Well i got the trans off to the shop for a rebuild . It is a long tail th-350 . The shop said they could make it a short shaft as i will be swapping back and forth between it and a powerglide with a brake .
http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f1...ownsize-10.jpg
And i got a little farther on the motor . Intake on and torqued and a few other parts added . Headers and mounts should be here monday and i should be starting the motor install on friday and working towards getting it running the following week .

Re: New project

A buddy of mine had a set of Landrum monos and caltracs for a first gen camaro that i thought might work . Well the Caltracs didn't work and im back to square one there . I did get the axle housing ends and axles . I ended up getting a smokin deal on a set of used 31 splines . I already have a 31 spline spool , so i went that way .

Just about got the motor ready to pull . I got it about half way apart and found out why it was running rough . O2 senser wire was pinched under the valve cover and grounded . The little motor was probably O.K. Oh well its coming out . GOing to try and trade it for a set of buckets at the salvage yard .

theres one available here in abilene at my buddys shop.
it's narrowed everthing (was under a vega dragster)
probably comes with slicks too and i do believe he has a second gear set also.

interested?

Re: New project

Well i got the 2.5 out and the mounts bolted in . Only 2 of the 3 bolts are accsssible and they are a pain to get in so welding the mounts is mansitory in my opinion . I cleaned up the frame with my 4 " grinder and a wire wheel so i can haul it down to the race car shop and have them welded . I'll get the motor in when i finish the mounts . Im going to see if he has a panish hammer for an air chisel and have the floor flange messaged while i got it over there . Here are a couple of pics i'll add some more later .
