Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
So far I have the qjet pulled off of the engine to rebuild it. The carb is really dirty, and it is flooding and having trouble staying running.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Good looking project the rust could be worse.
what does the emblem say over GMC on the tail gate band? |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Its the dealerships tag that they put on the trucks when they where new on the lot. Its the Roper GMC/Pontiac dealership which is in Joplin, MO. I think the dealership is still in business, but I found in the glove box the business card for the guy that sold the truck back in 85.

Cool man! Do you have any smog or emissions testing up there?

Sometimes the SES light is up there, where the Glow Plugs and Water in fuel light are on a diesel.

Does a TH400 have any vacuum lines or kick down cable? There were only a cruise and throttle cable hooked up to the carb, no kick down like a Th350. I am also not sure where the vacuum advanced for the distributor goes on this carb. It looks like it hasn't been hooked up for a long time. |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Well the carb is really dirty, and so I think it will be best to drop the gas tanks to make sure that they are clean on the inside. I am also replacing all of the rubber lines and putting filters on everything to catch any dirt. I am also going to replace the line that goes from the fuel pump to the carb with hose so that I can put a inline filter so I can see if any dirt is getting up toward the carb.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
All 6.2 diesels i have seen have had that bezel in it, because those lights are for water in fuel and the glow plugs, but somebody could of swapped that in their. nice truck.
|
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
yep never seen any emission trucks with that bezzel, only 6.2 diesel trucks
|
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
What about the bezel makes it like a 6.2 bezel? The little screen part at the top?

Here you go, were you asking where the one above the filter goes to also?
Man that thing is dirty, I was almost ashamed to show it. The cummins will be prettier. :) |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Thanks for the pictures, but that doesnt help me haha. There are so many damn vacuum lines its confusing, Im just going to start hooking them up haha. The diagram on the air cleaner is hard to follow compared to the actual engine. I want to take all the emissions stuff off, but there is so much that it would cost me more than I would want. This engine wont be in here to long.
|
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Well maybe I misunderstood, what do you need pictures of?
|
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
No, you got it right, its just the fact that I have a million more vacuum lines on mine so it doesnt really help me. I think I got it all figured out.
I tried to drop my gas tanks, but I was fighting rusty bolts, so I am going to have to wait and get my truck down to my grandpas shop and work on it. But I have a bunch of stuff to clean up from my k10 first haha. |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Lets see a picture of yours.
|
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
This is the only picture that I have. You cant tell much, but it has all of the emissions stuff, and some kind of emissions thing that runs off the belts.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
I believe that's the rarely seen "smog pump" that ive only heard rumors of around these here parts.
|
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
My 86 K30 w/350 also has that dash bezel, I`ve also seen others. What are your plans with the roof rust? Good looking rig though, be nice w/4WD.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Well I am planning on buying another crew cab without a title and a 6.2 diesel and I will cut out the top of the doors on it and weld them into this cab. I will be taking the diesel out of that truck and putting it in this truck.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Well i got the bed taken off the truck, only had one bolt rotate on me! I also got the gas tanks dropped they do not look dirty. The fuel tank switch was not working but I messed with the plug an everythig seems to be working fine now. Hopfully I'll have it running good by this weekend!

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
sweeet.
|
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Well I got both of the fuel tanks on and got all of the fuel system hooked up. Was having trouble with idle so I went back and found some vacuum lines not hooked up so I plug some and hooked others up and it runs great!
Next thing will be changing out all of the fluids and putting the bed back on so that I can use this truck to haul another crew cab 1 ton home to get the 6.2 out of. |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Cool, good to hear that it runs great now!
|
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Yeah when I first had it running I was afraid something was wrong. But the carb rebuild seems to have done its job.
My fuel tank selector sounds like it is having a hard time switching between the tanks. I have never had one of these so I am not sure if it sounds normal or not. It works, but sometimes you cant get the tanks to switch, but if you don't switch it for a while and then switch it, it works. |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Does this truck have egr? if so can you show me a picture of how its hooked up?
|
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Yeah, it has all of the emissions stuff. The thing is there is so much that idk that a picture will show much. I'll try to get a picture the next time I am messing with the truck.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Sorry Matt Man, I have not gotten around to getting that picture for you. I have not touched the truck, I have been trying to figure out the heating problem/oil leaking problem on my k10.
Plans have slightly changed for this build. My lead on a title-less crew cab with the 6.2 diesel in it, and the cab I wanted to use to cut up to fix my rust problems on mine was sold. I did find a guy that is going to be selling his 6.2 diesel out of his truck that he uses to tow with. It is out of a military truck and has less than 60k miles, he said he would give me the radiator, new glow plugs he has for it, fly wheel for a sm465, the oil cooling lines, basically everything needed to just drop it in, and wire the engine up. I think I might be trading him my big block for it. So for now I will be converting it to single wheel, I kinda like single wheel crew cabs. I don't need a dually, and I cant afford 6 tires for the truck, I am going to keep the bed and the rear axle for now, just encase I want to swap it back to a dually. So the drive train will be 6.2l diesel/SM465/NP205/Dana44 front/Corp 14 bolt rear. I was trying to get my K20 parts taken off the frame, but the flat bed is welded to the frame and I ran out of acetylene for my torch so that will have to wait. I think I will start tearing down this truck within two weeks. Should be fun! |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
no problem, looking forward to your build.
|
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Well I have yet to touch the crew cab, I have been trying to get all of the parts I need for the 4x4 swap off of my k20. I got the Cab/Flatbed removed from the k20, and was able to get the front axle off of the frame today.
http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...b/IMG_0159.jpg I am having some problems figuring out how to get some things to work. I was looking at the crew cab frame and the shocks are mounted on the inside of the frame, where as the Corp 14 bolt that I have on my k20 it has the shocks on the outside of the frame. The 1 ton does not have any mounts on the outside of the frame so Im not sure what to do about it yet. I guess I will figure that out when it comes time to mount it up. I am also wondering about the engine cross member I am not sure if the front of the k20 frame and the front of the c30 frame are the same height so Im not sure if I will have to run some spacers or not. I plan on running both a front and rear sway bar if they both bolt up. |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
I have run into that problem before. The 1 tons and 3/4 tons have different spring mounts. We cut the spring mounts off the axle and rewelded them where they needed to be for the 1 ton frame.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Im talking about the shock mounts. To solve the problem of the spring mounts I am taking all of the spring hangers off of the k20 frame and going to put them on the c30 frame.
|
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
So the past few days I have been busy working on getting the 4x4 stuff off of the K20 frame so that I can mount it to the crew cab frame.
Front body mount/spring mount http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...b/IMG_0165.jpg All of the parts, Rear axle spring hangers, front axle spring hangers/body mounts, engine crossmember, ect. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...b/IMG_0166.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...b/IMG_0167.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...b/IMG_0168.jpg Here is the corp 14 bolt I am putting in place of the Dana 70HD http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...b/IMG_0174.jpg Dana 70HD removed http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...b/IMG_0175.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...b/IMG_0176.jpg Now I am going to start mocking up the stuff to make sure everything is going to fit, then I will tear it down and paint the stuff and install it for the final time. |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
You've been busy! Save your 2wd steering box encase you ever want crossover steering.
|
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Yes I have, lots of using the cutting torch, angle grinder, and chisel and hammer. I am keeping my 2wd steering just for that, after I get this rear axle mocked up I am probably going to remove the rest of the body and the drive train. Then I can start on the front and then start getting things painted!
