slow ride (redux)
I had a project thread but I turned it off last year when I took the truck to the scrap metal yard. I had been working on it pretty consistently since 2008, I got hooked up with a builder who quoted a price then did some cruddy work and when you complained he said "well what do you expect for being so cheap?". He had a lot of talent but was choosy about when he used it.
Next I had a friend work on it to get it salable, needed shock mounts and rear bag mounts reset. he instead blew the whole truck apart and redid a lot of the first guys work. when I got excited about it he got an out of state job offer and the whole truck showed back up at my house in a gazillion pieces last christmas. He is a good friend and tried to do me a solid, but is a better starter than finisher. I was tired of messing with it, the cosmos was clearly telling me where I could shove my project, so I sold a bunch of the parts including the front clip and most of the air ride. I gathered up as much sheetmetal as I could and towed it and the frame/cab to the scrap metal recycler. the tow cost 57 dollars and I got $134, I took my wheels off and left. problem solved. Happy wife. That should be the end. But it wasnt. The metal recycler started calling for the title, even though I was clear when I dropped it off that it was not included and he made it clear it was not needed. Turns out he wanted to sell it on as a project, what I did NOT want to happen and why I made certain the title was not needed. He called the cops, I called the cops, I went down there to sort it out. another $57 plus the $134 return and it was towed home. My wife was chagrined that I could still find a way to lose money on the truck. And thats how it sat. In July the guy who bought the front clip called and needed some money, did I want the clip back? I wheeled and dealed some more bags on craigslist. My friend came over and asked why it was still all blown apart when I clearly had everything it needed. Good question. http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_7659.jpg so here is the truck right now. http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...zeRender-5.jpg long story short, starting from the beginning in the middle, it is a combination of a few trucks. a 1998 s10 2.2 5 spd gave its drivetrain, frame, suspension a 1965 long bed gave the cab a 1966 long bed gave the front clip and doors and trim http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...457F0259F2.jpg and the bed was part of the first incarnation as a 1962, that could not be titled as a 62 because the s10 had a title and the 62 had a bill of sale. http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...IMG_0003-2.jpg I will update more progress, thanks to kyle and my wife for getting this truck going again. |
Re: slow ride (redux)
Glad to hear you are back at ity again. Heck, if I had know you were working on it this weekend I could have split away from the family while I was in Wichita. Maybe next year.
Again good to see you going at it on the truck again. Hopefully things will work out this go round. |
Re: slow ride (redux)
thanks! he has been doing a nice job. some of the things done are new front and rear shocks, I found a guy selling some jeep rubicon take offs from a 2014, they have 8 and 8.5" travel front and rear respectively.
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_7717.jpg I also bought a new hurst short shifter with a 13" stick. http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_7867.jpg and the bed tilts so you can change wheels, I dont know how other guys with bagged and laid out trucks address that problem but this was our approach. http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...jpeg_0-3-1.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...gejpeg_0-2.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...jpeg_0-5-1.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...gejpeg_0-9.jpg put on the new stainless mirrors I got from the 63 project I bought for the grille and pile of LMC parts http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...ejpeg_0-11.jpg wheels are B.A.D. 22", 8.5 front and 10" rear, I think they fit the truck perfectly http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...gejpeg_0-6.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...gejpeg_0-4.jpg almost done under the hood http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...gejpeg_0-8.jpg |
Re: slow ride (redux)
I love this build keep up the work
|
Re: slow ride (redux)
Now that's a story, truck looks good.
|
Re: slow ride (redux)
Hows the four banger in that?
|
Re: slow ride (redux)
there are a lot of people who think a 4 cylinder would be underpowered and tantamount to blasphemy. they talk about how heavy the 60-66 is and that it would never be able to keep up with traffic. those people are just wrong. it wont win any stoplight races, but it drives like a normal truck and will out accelerate a stock 60-66 6cyl 3spd. It has a lot of pep, and the stock hp/tq numbers are very close to this engine, with better gearing, no granny gear 1st and more gears in the middle. If I ever want a v8 it will almost drop in but I really dont see it happening, I'll leave the V8s to the guys who want them and the associated costs.
I had videos of the truck in traffic in the old thread, I will try and find them. |
Re: slow ride (redux)
Just give everyone a wave and a honk when your driving by them!! At the gas station. I looked for your thread for so long glad it's back wanna keep track of this one. Keep up the great work
|
Re: slow ride (redux)
thanks man, the best thing about this truck is that it starts right up, in any weather, after sitting outside, and is ready to move after only a couple minutes warming up in extreme cold.
I was working on the wiring earlier, its nice splicing a modern harness. |
Re: slow ride (redux)
That's a pretty cool story.. Looks cool so far, I wouldn't even paint it
|
Re: slow ride (redux)
no plans for paint, I am going to CLR the bed so it matches and put the custom side trim on it. I'll do a wood bed floor too, I have a stainless strip kit from LMC, it will lay right on top of the 2x2 frame.
really I just want to drive it again. |
Re: slow ride (redux)
porterbuilt hood hinges.
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...magejpeg_0.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...jpeg_0-1-1.jpg widened the tubs. the original guy widened them once and they hit the tires. only needed an extra 1/4" but kyle went ahead and set me up to run 31x15.50x15 dirt trackers http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...gejpeg_0-1.jpg a shot of the perfect camber. the fenders have been trimmed slightly since this picture for the tubs that allow some modicum of turning http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...jpeg_0-2-1.jpg |
Re: slow ride (redux)
I gotta say, its nice to take parts out of the garage you have been saving for years.
the exhaust is back on and done. its a smithy glass pack, has an upstream resonator and I added a header, mostly because it was cheaper than the factory manifold downpipe (with blown flex pipe) that had all the flow potential of a bendy straw. kyle painted everything nice and glossy, and put the gas tank and driveshaft back in, and started plumbing the air tank. http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_8016.jpg almost done under the hood too, extended the blinkers to mount in the factory hood lights, hooked up the EDC, mounted the HID ballasts, hooked up the high beams. http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_8018.jpg 63 aluminum grille I have had for about 7 years now. http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_8021.jpg |
Re: slow ride (redux)
What are you using for fittings for edc? For mine I took the bulky factory ac fittings off and tapped the inside of the hole. Pretty sure it was 1/2npt I used just a cheaper alternative to having custom lines made up. Never had a problem with it. If ya don't wanna pull the head off I just did it with compressor on and it blew all shaving right out
|
Re: slow ride (redux)
it was an airlift EDC kit for the 2.2 s10 so it came with all the fittings installed, but thats good advice, those ac fittings are hard to find connectors for.
|
Re: slow ride (redux)
I'm way to cheap for the kit. Lol. It was a pita to make brackets for where I wanted so maybe next time. Is Kyle the guy that did the suspension work and the box? Your lucky to have a guy like that available. It's looking great
|
Re: slow ride (redux)
yep, the truck was under most of the remodel stuff in my garage because I couldnt even throw it away. kyle has done everything except some stuff only I had intrinsic knowledge of. it was mostly his idea, he kept asking about it until I finally agreed.
|
Re: slow ride (redux)
joedoh, you dare to be different. Cool build! I'm interested to see how the four banger works out.
|
Re: slow ride (redux)
thanks, I've driven it in various stages and it runs like a normal truck, gets mid 20s mpg.
here is an older vid of the truck driving http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...IMG_0556-1.mp4 and another (lets see who is the savvy truck spotter on this forum) http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h_IMG_0619.mp4 (what you were supposed to spot in the second vid was the 60-63 dash) it spent time as a 1962 for a year or two, before I found the big window 65 cab. http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_1496.jpg |
Re: slow ride (redux)
fuel lines hooked up, bed on for the last time, wiring 99%, just need a brake switch and 3 quarts of syncromesh and should be on the road again!
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...jpeg_0-1-3.jpg |
Re: slow ride (redux)
its alive... ITS ALIVE!!!
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h_IMG_8100.mp4 kyle swapped out benches, its a lot better than the old bench that looked like a casting couch. http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_8101.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_8102.jpg drives like a dream, amazing what the right parts will do. http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...jpeg_0-6-1.jpg it now has hydroboost, 4 corner long travel shocks, quick ratio steering box, custom long control arms, edc, manual valves, header with 370z center resonator and smithys glass pack, and HID 7" lights http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...jpeg_0-9-1.jpg |
Re: slow ride (redux)
That's a good looking truck.
|
Re: slow ride (redux)
Glad to see you have it road worthy again. She looks good!
|
Re: slow ride (redux)
thanks guys
|
Re: slow ride (redux)
That's one heck of a parts list!
|
Re: slow ride (redux)
still shaking down, the old MIC manuals are leaky (in the up direction, go figure) so I ordered some little larrys manuals and fittings. EDC builds pressure stupid quick even at idle, and if you have the engine rpm up at all it just zooms. I learned that lesson on my old galaxie with the york compressor EDC, just such fast recovery times, I will never have another electric compressor. from 100psi to 185psi at idle, maybe 22 seconds.
found a rear bumper today, its a 73-87 sport bumper but with a little trimming it will look great. better than nothing in my opinion. http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_8146.jpg it was out in kingman, the guy has a 472 56 hardtop with 31x18.5 rear tires, says it runs 10.88s. check out that single circuit master! still drums, says it takes a while to slow down http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_8143.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_8138.jpg stopped at smittys while in town http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_8145.jpg needs very little to be a daily now, headlight is crooked from a missing adjuster but I had one. putting in shoulder belts and the rear bumper, I think thats it for kyles work! http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...IMG_8158-1.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_8149.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_8159.jpg then my finish work starts, carpet, gauge cluster mod, stereo, alarm, power locks, bed floor, etc etc etc. But plenty of driving in my future. :D |
Re: slow ride (redux)
kyle trimmed up the bumper and made some brackets. its an aesthetic piece only, it tilts with the bed so it has no function other than concealing the gap, but it was a must have to me.
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...ejpeg_0-10.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...jpeg_0-1-4.jpg the seat belts are in, the truck is "done" even though I have new valves and a new steering adapter in the mail. The billet specialties steering adapter holds the lecarra wheel too close to the stalks so you cant click the high beams. |
Re: slow ride (redux)
drove it home, about a 30 minute ride in traffic.
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...jpeg_0-4-1.jpg I stayed on surface streets most of the way but it started getting dark and the headlights wouldnt come on for some reason, so I jumped on the highway. http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_8208.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...SizeRender.jpg edc building pressure while kyle talks about the HVAC http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h_IMG_8161.mp4 driving impressions: the close ratio steering with a borgeson joint is REALLY responsive. the shocks are amazing, I have no concept of ride height yet and was actually driving so low I bottomed out under hard braking, but not driving. the ride was taut but not stiff, compliant without being pillowy. It is lacking power, like it still has a big ass vacuum leak. I wonder if the center spark leads got reversed or something during the header install, because it is loud, louder than it was ever before. It still had enough power to cruise on the highway at 65mph. The speedo is way off, WAY off, owing to the 31.5" rear tires I bet. The MIC valves are sticky so I ordered (and received) some little larrys valves. I will put them in tomorrow when the fittings come in from Gauge. http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...G_8202JPG.jpeg |
Re: slow ride (redux)
the lecarra wheel doesnt let the high beam stalk come far enough forward. and the wheel is farther away, enough to feel unnatural when driving
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_8159.jpg I ordered and received the correct adapter but it cam sans nuts and bolts, and it is black powdercoat, I decided I could do something better.browsing the local cl I found: http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...e661399167.png http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...e581784178.png 50 dollars and 10 minutes later http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...IMG_8222-2.jpg fits perfect, all the stalks work now, and best of all it is the perfect distance away from the driver now. in advance of questions, YES I did use a tire 4 way to change out the wheel. NO I did not need a wheel puller. found an old picture from two months ago. this truck was just keeping the garage from floating away and was buried under remodel and moving stuff. http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_6458.jpg |
Re: slow ride (redux)
good deal on the wheel
|
Re: slow ride (redux)
Cool project man!
|
Re: slow ride (redux)
thanks guys.
my eagle eyed brother spotted that it is actually a 65 corvette horn button in that impala wheel, thats pretty cool. |
Re: slow ride (redux)
I was wondering about that. Been over 20 years since I had my Impala of that era and just couldn't remember if mine had that for the horn button or not.
It looks really good! |
Re: slow ride (redux)
thanks! it looks really close to the seat in some pictures, but its not at all. I think by far that is the best looking wheel that could be in the truck
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_8223.jpg |
Re: slow ride (redux)
it was the hit of the christmas party, I parked it on the lawn.
drove it some more today, its definitely running better and better with use but I cant seem to get any high rpm urgency from it. tomorrow I will pick up plugs which I am sure are junked and gunked from the builder two builders ago just flooding the heck out of it the last time it ran under its own power. I will also try putting a vacuum gauge on it because it is acting like a big vacuum leak, maybe at the EGR valve, which I want to remove anyway. I might even put in the new manual valves and run to WalMart for a super secret project that everyone will love . |
Re: slow ride (redux)
ordering carpet tomorrow, got the silvered wood for the bed.
messing with the headlights, love the look of the 50% power high beams, the 98 had a BCM with DRLs so I am unsure of if I want this feature to stay or not. having trouble blowing headlight fuses, suspect the turn stalk switch because when I turn on the headlights only one high beam is on and the fuses blow shortly after. http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_8263.jpg havent had a lot of time to mess with it, my garage is full of my major remodel stuff so all work takes place outside. http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_8304.jpg |
Re: slow ride (redux)
what a swing, below zero one week and in the 50s today. I swapped plugs and wires and went for a blast.
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...uckhighway.mp4 runs better than ever, keeping up with traffic http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_8445.png still chasing a high rpm lack of power, wants to rev to 5k or so. I think maybe the fuel filter is clogged up from a few idle years. I'll try changing it out tomorrow. edit: well reading online it seems like maybe the timing chain is the problem, it may have skipped a few teeth and is retarded. I am going to order a timing kit since the donor S10 has 114k and should be replaced anyway. |
Re: slow ride (redux)
Got any pics of the frame swap? Did you just cause the front clip then build rails?
|
Re: slow ride (redux)
like most 60-66 the cab floor was pretty rusty, so I actually cut the floors and firewall out of both the donor and the donee and welded them together, keeping the cowl of the fullsize and joining the s10 airbox to it so that all the HVAC stuff on the s10 firewall would work. the wheels didnt line up right with the firewalls lined up, so new body mounts were built 4 inches back from stock and using the stock s10 mounts in the floor.
I just posted these pics in another thread, but here they are again body mounts: http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_4627.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_4628.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...psd5f0d0ea.jpg clip transition: http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...psad777851.jpg fish plates for strength: http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_4490.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_4489.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps6b6174d6.jpg cleaned up http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_8016.jpg here are a few of the under construction parts, remember that we did the cab swap twice, the 62 truck at first only had a bill of sale so it was easier for the DMV to title it as a 98 that I had the title for. Over my dead body though, so I found a 65 with title and transferred the cab. http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m..._5292056_n.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m..._5082682_n.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_0686.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...AyNjAuanBn.jpg |
Re: slow ride (redux)
