72 k20
Put down a few bucks a couple weeks ago for the owner ( a member here) to hold on to this one for me. Going to pick it up Saturday... Planning to do a mostly factory restoration.

Re: 72 k/20
Love that color. One of my favorites

Re: 72 k/20
Congrats ,looks like a nice one .

Re: 72 k/20
I was contemplating parting this one out and using the 4x4 parts for the build on my 2x4 Cheyenne but I'm not gonna do that this one is to cool to me to sign the organ donor card.

Re: 72 k/20
Jocko I had a feeling you'd chime in on this one! If you recall a week or two back I was inquiring about pics with the 557 code. Now you know why... I agree that GMC is great inspiration. Hope mine looks that good someday soon.

Ha, I shoulda KNOWN something was up! Congrats, that will be a VERY nice truck. Here's another - 72BlueC20 posted in the 558 thread. 70CST has a gorgeous one in the 557 combo also, I think!

Re: 72 k/20
I'm beginning to wish the one I'm picking up was a four eye. Those are certainly some beautiful pieces of sheet metal!

Re: 72 k/20
Nice score!

Re: 72 k/20

Re: 72 k/20
Well the eagle has landed! Had long fun day of driving with my father in law and brother in law up to Kevin's place (undertaker72). Had fun bsing around and learning a few new things for an hour or so before we got her loaded back up and on the road again. 700ish miles round trip in one day. If any one is wondering a longbed 4x4 fits on the uhaul trailer exactly with nothing to spare! Thanks for deal Kevin your a class act!

Haha Ya you gotta watch those rangers... They can get kinda heavy and can shape shift on you haha. Was definitely one of the more fun days I've had in a while. Thanks guys I'll post some more pics up after the race in phoenix is over.
Mechanicalman it's funny you mention the longhorn because on the uhaul website it says that up to a 133" wheel base will fit. That's a bunch of crap haha! |
Re: 72 k/20
Here are some more promised pics. After the race was over(might I add my 4 won the race!!!) I managed to pull the seat to clean out the 1000 lbs of mud and dirt on the floor, and to search for the illusive build sheet. I also wanted to get a better look at the rust in the floors. Kevin told me he thought it might need a full floor and I agree. Here's so pics of the progress. I should have taken some of under the cab but didn't. I guess from here on out this is my reincarnated ranch truck build thread. I had to start it off by getting the bosses approval haha she's small but already wants to drive!
http://i1262.photobucket.com/albums/...psjxlrq1z3.jpg http://i1262.photobucket.com/albums/...psyjwabzrl.jpg http://i1262.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2zfanud3.jpg http://i1262.photobucket.com/albums/...psohjycu7k.jpg http://i1262.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4dinovux.jpg http://i1262.photobucket.com/albums/...psiklrfguw.jpg http://i1262.photobucket.com/albums/...psoskxjwvm.jpg http://i1262.photobucket.com/albums/...psi8axa91v.jpg The last one is where the bed got pretty friendly with the cab at some point in the past... Nothing a slide hammer, welder, hammer & dolly won't fix... I really should have taken pics of the 2 trash bags of sh... That came out of it, along with the 2 huge piles of dirt on both sides. Unfortunately no build sheet... I was wondering if anyone knows of a complete high hump repop floor? All the parts catalogs I've got (5-6 different companies) only have the low hump. I realize I may have to cut the low hump out but of they sell a high hump I'd rather do that. I'm on the road all week so I won't be back home to get anything done till probably Saturday night. |
Re: 72 k/20
tyler , did you find any gold at the end of that rainbow , get that kid making vroom-vroom noises if shes going to be driving a chev
|
Re: 72 k/20
I was lookin for the leprechaun under the seat... Wanted to hang him upside down and shake his pockets down... Unfortunately all I found was a mouse nest and lots of trash haha.
She's learning to laugh now vroom vroom will surely be next! |
Re: 72 k/20
that a kid
|
Re: 72 k/20
Can't you reuse the high hump that's there?
|
Re: 72 k/20
tyler, like nitus stated I think just floor patch panels will go ok , you can buy different confg. or cut from doner , that way you still have the original sub structor
|
Re: 72 k/20
The high hump cover itself is fine I was referring to the floor with cutout already in it. But ya I can definitely Cut the center section out of the repop floor. My pops and I put a new high hump floor in his k/20 but that was a few years ago now and I can't seem to find them. I want to use the repop floor because obviously the supports and braces are already welded in and they all need replaced on the floor I've got. I'll have to do some lower firewall patching as well but I'll deal with that without buying a fire wall. Kevin how's the lower fire wall sections that butt up to the main floor on that truck you chopped up for patches?

Re: 72 k/20
Ill check tomorrow we can break out the kitchen magetion
|
Re: 72 k/20
Awesome sounds good. I don't think ill need but maybe 12" up on both passenger and drivers sides. Don't cut nothin till I can get home and yank the inner fenders for a better look at the other side in case I need more than a foot.

Re: 72 k/20
Well I was able to get home unexpectedly for a few hours before I'm on the road again to phoenix tomorrow and Friday... Out of curiosity I scraped down the pad on the passenger side of the engine block to see what I could decipher about the motor(wondering if it was original). Here's what I found, don't mind the 1/2" thick sludge build up:)
http://i1262.photobucket.com/albums/...psgt7x6hjg.jpg If I'm doing it right it seems to break down as a flint built 9/20 1973 4bbl manual trans ls9 350 out of a c/20 or c/30... Close to original but no cigar.... |

Keep scratching until you find the VIN, if you find it and it matches the truck then it's the original engine IMO. If no VIN, then the engine was likely replaced under during the first year, possibly under warranty. |
Re: 72 k/20
Did the trucks get the vin? I thought I read somewhere that they didn't? Where would it be at? I didn't try to get to the rear pad on the drivers side by the bell housing, but I'm not even sure if the older blocks have one.
|
Re: 72 k/20
I'm glad you found a K/20. Looks like one from back home, ay? Too bad you couldn't find one in New Mexico, but at least you have one. I'm sure Kevin must have given you a great deal to lure you so far from home.
No VIN on truck engines. That is whatever the code says. GM wouldn't have been able to put an engine from the next year in a truck the year before, obviously. The codes are accurate. That is the whole point of them. |
Re: 72 k/20
Tim it's funny you say that it looks like it's from home. I figure most people out here probably wouldn't spend the time to fix this one. having spent my life in northern Va I can appreciate a truck that only has floor rust ha! All the other "normal areas" like around the windshield and such seem to be fine. My 3100 got a floor my dad and I did a floor in his 72 k/20 too so this is nothing new to me. I've almost come to believe every time you buy an old truck you should put money away for a floor too haha. At the end of the day it's another k/20 saved and getting ready for another 40+ years of life.

Re: 72 k/20
And for an original restoration it's a Cheyenne in an attractive color combo
|
Re: 72 k/20
In all honesty those two things aside from it being a real 350/4spd k/20 are the reason I'm saving it. Medium olive over dark seems to be pretty rare combo especially in a Cheyenne k/20

Re: 72 k/20
Got some time this weekend to play around a bit. Got it running with a splash of gas down the carb. It fired right up. So I threw some in the in cab tank... It primed and fired. One problem. The ghetto rigged rubber fuel line from the tank to the pump leakes bad. I only ran it for 2-3 seconds each fire. (15 mins apart) because the radiator is missing. I also pulled the inner fenders to check the toe boards out... They have the sexy original dark olive paint still on them. The floors and lower flange on the fire wall rusted from the inside out... Weird... Needless to say I'm making a patch panel and parts list and plans for late spring early summer to start fixing rust and get the old beast on the road. The worst thing I found in the whole day was the lower outer cowl "floor" where the drains are is all hacked up from the "custom" speakers some one put in the kick panels. Probably gonna be a blast to get that fixed up. I thought I too more pics but I guess I didnt. I'll get some more when I'm home from the road tomorrow night.... Pics to follow

Re: 72 k/20
The rear of the cab still needs a lot of bumping but the dent is mostly gone. Still gotta figure out how to get the top knocked out but the worst of it mostly taken care of. I'll get to the back of the cab when I get the bed bolts cut off and scoot the bed back...
