Craigslist find...the Holy Grail of squares - NOT MINE
1 Attachment(s)
Wish I could buy this, but since I can't maybe one of you can. Lots of close up pictures of rockers and cab corners, ZERO rot.
1987 short step silverado 4x4 with TBI 350 and SM465. 114K original miles, and extremely sharp. http://raleigh.craigslist.org/snw/5706205966.html Mike |
Re: Craigslist find...the Holy Grail of squares - NOT MINE
Sure looks like it's had a respray probably a decade ago. Also looks like the cab corners have been worked/replaced to me.
|
Re: Craigslist find...the Holy Grail of squares - NOT MINE
Respray, probably...gm paint sucked back then. Cab corners, I doubt it. Looks like factory spot welds to me, and there is zero rust on the rest of the truck that would indicate rot.

Re: Craigslist find...the Holy Grail of squares - NOT MINE
Looks like it has had cab corners or rockers to me...they don't look right. Nice truck though.
|
Re: Craigslist find...the Holy Grail of squares - NOT MINE
I wouldn't call it the "holy grail of squares"
Different strokes for different folks |
Re: Craigslist find...the Holy Grail of squares - NOT MINE
Definitely better than most you see, I like it.
|
Re: Craigslist find...the Holy Grail of squares - NOT MINE
Define "don't look right". I've seen plenty that I know were factory that weren't as straight as those. Quality control wasn't nearly what it is today. I remember looking at a new 1986 Camaro that had body gaps that any car enthusiast would be embarrassed by.
It's right down the road from me, and I'd be happy to go look at it if someone were interested. I'd be willing to bet good money that the cab corners are original based on the frame, under body, and door bottom pictures. I recently bought an '86 that lived it's entire life less than 5 miles from that one. It wasn't nearly as well taken care of as that truck obviously has been, and it only had spots the size of a dime in each cab corner. The rest of the truck has ZERO rot. As far as the rarity of the truck, I've owned more squares than I care to admit. I've only ever seen 2 1987 short bed step side 4x4's with factory SM465 and Silverado package. I owned one and never should have sold it. I've seen more factory big block short bed trucks than I could shake a stick at. Like you said different strokes, but I don"t think anyone could argue the rarity of the options. MIke |
Re: Craigslist find...the Holy Grail of squares - NOT MINE
Odd that it is Silverado badged yet has a vinyl seat and rubber floors. That truck just throws up a few flags to me, especially at that price tag. I'd cruise past it and never give it a second thought.
Most trucks around here at this age have rusted cab corners but perfect rockers and doors etc. Heck the '87 I have now we did cab corners and that was the only rust on the entire truck. We are not in the rust belt here but for sure get rain, and that is what got the cab corners on the squares. No where near the holy grail truck, that transmission is in a LOT of squares, probably more than the 700R4. Sorry, but I see a $2500 truck there at best. To quote Keith, "there are no rare squares". |
Re: Craigslist find...the Holy Grail of squares - NOT MINE
Well you need to load up all those $2500 OK trucks that are this clean and bring them out here. You could make a killing. If it was an '86 fleet side with a carb 305, and if it were this clean it would bring $4500-$5000 here. I sold an '85 long bed that wasn't this clean for $4500 last year.
And I don't care what Keith thinks. Find another 1987 short step 4x4 350 truck (that is original) that's for sale. They aren't out there very often. Mike |
Re: Craigslist find...the Holy Grail of squares - NOT MINE
That's a nice square. It looks right to me in some ways. Its 30 years old and still in its original condition which is rare. I'd like to have it.

I only passed over 2 extreme beaters that were "only" $1500-2000. Mike |
Re: Craigslist find...the Holy Grail of squares - NOT MINE
People can advertise and try and sell for what they want, does not mean it will bring that, welcome to craigslist.
Sure are defensive for a "not mine". I mean no ill will, just calling it as I see it. Didn't know you were riding in the bubble. |
Re: Craigslist find...the Holy Grail of squares - NOT MINE
Being from NC, I tend to agree that the prices of a "nice" square are slightly higher here. We get out fair share of rain, plus the pine needles that we have tend to clog up drain holes which lead to rust. Cab corners, front fenders, the usual rust areas.
Nice 4x4 step sides are "rare" in NC. Not $8500 rare, but you don't see them every day. I'd love to have one, but $8500 is a stretch, especially for anyone who knows anything about Our Favorite Trucks....... |

Not defensive at all, just stating the facts. (I don't have a horse in the race) I just find it extremely humorous that you think the truck is a $2500 truck. If you can buy that same truck for $2500 in OK, you could bring it here and easily double your money every day. I buy and sell a lot of squares and I know what they go for. I sold a '87 SWB 2wd that was extremely nice a couple of years ago for $12,500. Regardless of what your market is, the facts are that they bring good money here and clean ones are in demand. And what the crap is "riding in the bubble" supposed to mean? Some kind of childish jab? You just won't find a short bed 4x4 here for under $3500 unless it's a completely rusted out parts truck. Mike |
Re: Craigslist find...the Holy Grail of squares - NOT MINE
I'd agree it's a nice looking truck with a good option package, but it's overpriced and certainly not a 'holy grail' by any stretch.

I do care what you have to say about squares 99% of the time, but the truth is these truck in this condition are getting rare. Mike |
Re: Craigslist find...the Holy Grail of squares - NOT MINE
The one thing you have to remember about the word 'rare' is that rare =/= desirable.
|
Re: Craigslist find...the Holy Grail of squares - NOT MINE
I agree totally. Nash Ramblers are rare, but who wants one? These trucks are desirable, obviously based off of what clean examples are selling for.
I can't believe people are getting wound up by the words Holy Grail....I swiped it from his ad. No the truck isn't as rare as hens teeth, but it is very uncommon, and it is in nice original condition. No, he may not get $8500 for it, but I'll bet he'll get close to that. I would buy it if I could. I'm 2 square projects poor right now. Mike |
Re: Craigslist find...the Holy Grail of squares - NOT MINE
Problem is, all these stupid shows like gas monkey has everyone thinking these trucks are worth 3 times what they really are. $8500 isn't that bad, truthfully I feel like that's a 5k truck. What kills me are all these people who are asking 15k to 20k for a 8k truck.

I wonder if this is one of the $2500 Oklahoma Trucks?

The truth is we used to build these things until we were sick of them (about 15 million squares total); all different shapes and sizes. I used to see trucks going by when I would close my eyes at night. Any truck is 1 of 1 when you break it down far enough. The Marti report makes it's money that way - I saw a Mustang of some sort that was broken down until it was the only "blue one" with the optional block heater. Its to the point of ridiculousness. I suspect there was a 4x4 TBI M20 trans or two (thousand) in that mix. That's not really my thing, which is why I ordered mine as a 2wd with the MY6 trans. That IS my thing. K BTW - 900,000 trucks is about right. That's one per minute, 8 to 10 hours a day, over a six year period. |
Re: Craigslist find...the Holy Grail of squares - NOT MINE
I get what you are saying Keith. None of these trucks are really rare. I was more referring to the seemingly more popular '87 year, and the fact that it's fairly unmolested.
I have only ever had the opportunity to drive 1 MY6/A833 truck. It was a much more enjoyable driver than a SM465 truck. Unfortunately I've never had the opportunity to buy one. I could start another discussion by stating they are "rare"! ;) Mike |
Re: Craigslist find...the Holy Grail of squares - NOT MINE
Looks to be sold, wonder who bought it  ;)
|
Re: Craigslist find...the Holy Grail of squares - NOT MINE
Rare not rare. I wouldn't say Holy Grail but it is a nice looking truck. Bottom line is nice ones are getting harder to find.
|
Re: Craigslist find...the Holy Grail of squares - NOT MINE
You cant find one close to that nice around here for sale ,not that I am in the market but always looking .
|
Re: Craigslist find...the Holy Grail of squares - NOT MINE
To me the stepside 87 is worth more than the red and black fleetside. Its original and I think fairly rare. There could not have been many built in 87 that were short stepside 4x4 and a manual trans. If that's The type of truck that you like it could be your holy grail truck. Every one has an idea of what their holy grail is .
The other truck has been restored but not to original specs. Paint isn't the right height, doesn't contour correctly at the front fender, interior isn't stock, etc. Its a nice one but not my taste. That code 29 dark blue stepside would look super nice restored but is nice the way it is. |
Re: Craigslist find...the Holy Grail of squares - NOT MINE
Keith if you try hard enough anything could be called rare because of its options. But to me anything mass production is not rare and never will be.I think some people want to brag they have something special which is cool but not really worth anymore because of it to me.

Re: Craigslist find...the Holy Grail of squares - NOT MINE
Well for what its worth, I thought it was a nice truck for the price. I know here in Arizona the price is fair but it was in North Carolina and I think the value of anything is relative to the place where you lay your head. Thanks for posting a cool Step side.

Thank you one again for the heads up on a really nice truck Mr Chevy 4X4!! Just arrived back up here in Maine a couple days ago and I was very excited to fire up the ol 87 after sitting for the last few months. It's a pleasure to drive and I'm thankful to own it! Hats off to you  |

Re: Craigslist find...the Holy Grail of squares - NOT MINE
Im a little late to the party BUT-lets look at this another way: If you were to build that truck using all GM NOS parts assuming you even had a rust free truck to start with, typical prices for NOS parts that you would need as far as Ive sold in the last 2 years to just handpick a few are:
NOS dashpad $1200 NOS doors LH/RH pair $1500 NOS fenders LH/RH pair $1200 NOS hood $800 NOS cluster bezel $350 NOS dash vent bezel $250 We are at $5300 alone in a few select NOS parts. So my point here is IF you are in the market for a super clean original square-you should realize what the cost of these same parts in NOS condition could potentially cost you....then suddenly an $8500 square doesnt seem too out of line. Having said that, is a restored 87 TBI truck worth upwards of 20K? Well imo NOT if its built with LMC parts-but if built with GM NOS parts, then Id say yes. So sure nice squares may not seem to be rare but one could argue finding certain NOS parts ARE!! So, in the end $8500 doesnt seem too bad of a price does it? |
Re: Craigslist find...the Holy Grail of squares - NOT MINE
I found my holy grail of squarebody chevy trucks on craigs list a few years ago , it was about as bare bones truck as gm made that year if I remember right it was a 1987 r1500 short bed v6 three on the tree and think it even had manual steering and no power brakes don't hold me to the steering and brake thing though , I bet the spid sticker had one line
