Amp Research Powerstep
Has anyone figured out how to mount a set of electric running boards from Amp Research? I'm going to be running 35's with a 5" lift and the significant other is going to need help getting in. Hell, it will make it a lot easier for me too.

Re: Amp Research Powerstep
I looked into something like this, but the torque box prevented me from using it because there was no room behind the rocker to hide the mechanism. I went with a permanently mounted step.

Re: Amp Research Powerstep
I like the idea, because I have to keep a milk crate in the back for my wife to climb in. I can see the torque boxes being a big problem. The price is also a big problem for me.
I took a look at the mechanism for the door steps on my motorhome. It doesn't seem all that complicated, and unless I'm way off, it seems to be powered by a windshield wiper motor. I may go the route of designing my own step when I get that far in my build. My second choice would be to have a step that has a permanent mount but with some type of breakaway. |
Re: Amp Research Powerstep
I already covered the bottom of the Blazer in Line-X so I need a bolt on option. It would be awesome to have the steps hide up in the rocker box, but that would take some custom fab work...
AMP doesn't picture any of their brackets so its hard to tell what might work. |
Re: Amp Research Powerstep
I've been interested in doing this as well. I'm trying to find a used set for mockup. Let me know if you get anywhere

Re: Amp Research Powerstep
Here is a Jimmy that has some kind of power step on it.

http://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/cto/5790026953.html I may try and contact them to find out more about the steps... They have the AMP logo on the brackets... to at least I know its possible. |
Re: Amp Research Powerstep
Leno has a bronco that ICON built and has a single step. Almost looks like they cut one in half and used it. I contacted AMP and they said this.
The steps you see in the video with Jay Leno are made for the Broncos made by Icon. These are exclusive to Icon at this time. They are not available for purchase through us. And from the information I have they are not able to sell the steps except for with the vehicle. Please let me know if you have any questions. If you get a hold of that guy with the Jimmy, get some pics! |

Wanted to use a pair too but did not see a good way to mount them . So I went old school loop steps

Re: Amp Research Powerstep
Found another option from a company in Utah. www.rockslideengineering.com
These are for a F150 Raptor and they have other truck and Jeep models.... http://www.rockslideengineering.com/...DR%20-%203.jpg You can see a vide of them in the link below... https://youtu.be/yQg8-ie9ge0 |
Re: Amp Research Powerstep
Bestop makes steps very similar to the AMP Research steps. Maybe they would be more accommodating for a custom setup.

Try looking into this. Once I finish other projects this is on my list. I wanted a retractable one as well to keep the body lines clean, especially a single step instead of the full board. Haven't seen much info on these though, but haven't looked to hard lately.

Re: Amp Research Powerstep
ICON got back with me and said they want $1250 for their version! ouch.
I wonder how much these from Stylin will be... |
Re: Amp Research Powerstep
I definitely want full length steps. I want to be able to climb into the bed from the steps...

Like this... I tried to find any info but other than this video... nothing... looks like they built some custom reinforcement into the floor for them... just wish i knew what they were off of so i could start to watch for some... Hinge mechanisms are specific to something... i know the ones on my duramax dont fold up like that... just at a angle next to the cab |
Re: Amp Research Powerstep
Agree, different style trucks are visible at all times. My brother 15 f-250 that we just did fold up COMPLETELY under the truck you see absolutely nothing. This has got to be possible....

Re: Amp Research Powerstep
Anyone one on here have amp steps on another vehicle of theirs that have a horizontal mounting surface on the same level? My 2015 GMC does kind of... but one is shorter as it goes to the body mount in the front and the rear is longer as it mounts up higher on the body... So its level on there but wouldnt work for this application

Re: Amp Research Powerstep
I ended up purchasing a set of used steps from a Jeep JK unlimited. They have a horizontal mounting surface front and rear... so i should be able to fab something up to the rocker boxes to hold them... might have to reinforce the boxes a bit but we shall see...

Re: Amp Research Powerstep
Interested in your findings

Re: Amp Research Powerstep

Update with pics...
I pretty much have these on and and working... just have to finish cutting steps to length and permanent wire them... i have tests them with the wire loose and they work fine... As mentioned months ago when I bought these they are Wrangler JK 4 door unlimited steps... they are pretty much bolt on other than the need to be cut down to length and spaced down 5/8-3/4 inch depending on how tight you want them to ride on the body when folded up... I prob over built my brackets etc but i didn't want them to fail on me and want my light little 250lb self to be able to use them without worry... |

Brackets... there is also another piece of the 1/2in plate that was cut and tapped and placed inside the rocker box to support this setup... forgot to get a pic of that though...

And now my question to you guys... When i originally started this project i wanted the boards to run wheel well to wheel well... But that just not possible with my tire size... at least the rear... so trying to decide if i should match the front up with the wheel well (assuming i dont have any clearance issues when turning) and trim the back as needed or equal space front and back depending on the how much trimming is needed in the rear?
Pics are where it needs to be in the back for now... i have a slightly bigger tire in mind so might have to be trimmed a little more and the outside of the tape mark on the front would be where the end of the plastic cap would need to be to match the back... |
Re: Amp Research Powerstep
Once the caps are on, I dont think equal spacing will matter visually. Just cut them where the overall length and brackets fit best. Nice solution.
|
Re: Amp Research Powerstep
How did you go about making the reinforcement plates? I would definitely like to see more pictures.
|
Re: Amp Research Powerstep
I would also love to see some pictures of where and how you mounted the plates under the rocker box. Nice job!

I ended up cutting them so they are 1.5" in from the wheel well openings... might need to trim a little more once i get it rolling/articulating but we shall see... its easy enough to do... even with them installed... I will get another pic of the new length. As far as the mounting... This is what i built: Attachment 1795081 Attachment 1795082 Attachment 1795083 They tucked up behind the rocker too far... so its a combo of some 1/2" flat stock, some 1/8 angle and 1/8th flat... it might be a tad too low as id like the gap to be a little tighter when they are up... buts its solid... Also Not show is 4 additional pieces of 1/2" stock i drilled to match and tapped and put inside the rocker boxes (2 per side)... So when installed it basically sandwiches it all together and doesnt flex or move at all... Prob over built a little... but im not a little dude and i didnt want to have to go and fix it again later... |

Look what Mr ups dropped off earlier today. Now I just have to figure out how I’m going to install them and wire them in.

Re: Amp Research Powerstep
Cant wait to see what you come up with...

Re: Amp Research Powerstep
I’ll be following chevyguy_72 lead. Hopefully he can help on how he wired it in.

Re: Amp Research Powerstep
What are the part numbers for either set?
