Yes they do/did haul @$$ but so did GM and Rambler and you can turn them into Beautifully ugly Gassers today But...
All that said, the guy up the street paid 100K OTD for this purple (with Pink accents) FOUR DOOR... Attachment 2345323 |

Ah, the "everyman's car".....meaning everyone has one. :puke:
I just all them "guppies", because they all look the same...no personality at all, not even bad, just none. Oh, I understand that they are fast, get decent mileage, etc...but I'd sooner take the bus. |

I agree, Chryslers were ugly in the early-mid 60’s- the Barracuda is a good example. In 1970 they turned it into a great looking car whereas the previous style was not attractive

My take on this is:
- Post war cars lacked style. Boring. Attachment 2345557 - Mid-50s they got decent Attachment 2345558 - Late-50s to early-60s it was "What were they thinking?" Ugly and way over styled. Attachment 2345559 - Mid-60s into the early-70s they were good looking. Attachment 2345560 Attachment 2345569 - Nothing holds a candle to GM styling through the years and across the board. - Other companies made a good looking one here and there. |
Re: Ok Chrysler made some of the Ugliest cars in the early '60's
1969 was the high point in automotive styling for American cars. All manufactures made some great looking cars (and trucks) that year. Styling went down hill in 1973.
I'm a life long Chevy guy but the 1969 Mustang fastback, 1969 Plymouth GTX, and 1969 Dodge Charger are all great looking cars. |

I'm waiting for my friend Rob to see this thread. He has affections for fast Mopars. His current project is a Demon

Re: Ok Chrysler made some of the Ugliest cars in the early '60's
I guess I am one of the oddities. I liked a lot of 60s Mopars. Loved my first gen Barracudas. Loved the 70s years also, but the 64-66 were the years for me. 50's Mopars were definitely odd. Dodge trucks of the 60s and 70s looked great to me. the big ole Fury's were just boats like the big Fords and Lincolns. Not bad to look at, but I didn't like getting sea sick driving those floaty rides.

They had great drivetrains. Max Wedge, Hemis, Dana rears, Torqueflight 747, all good

Re: Ok Chrysler made some of the Ugliest cars in the early '60's
No way I’d pay 100K for a charger. They are cool cars but not THAT cool. I’ll keep my Camaro. It’s pretty good at blowing the doors off those newer Chargers.

Re: Ok Chrysler made some of the Ugliest cars in the early '60's
An LAPD '68 Plymouth Satellite 4 door with a 383 and auto trans caught my friend driving a '62 Grand Prix with 389, tri-power and a 4-speed. 80 mph on a side street! That guy did jail time for speeding. Got kotched, he did!
A '70 Polara 4 door with a 440 (and a special police intake manifold) caught a different friend in his Z/28 at 160 mph on the Grapevine (hwy 5 between Newhall and Bakersfield). I may have mentioned it upthread, can't be bothered to look. I worked at a gas station on Van Nuys Blvd. at Sherman Way in '72. We'd hear the LAPD officers racing west on Sherman Way all the way to Kester St. Those Satellites were fast. The CHP cars were dogs off the line. They had some stupid tight axle and didn't actually get going for real until 40 mph in 1st gear. DAMHIKT. ;) |
Re: Ok Chrysler made some of the Ugliest cars in the early '60's
This is such a funny thread. There are plenty of those cars around here, I mean the Charger/Challenger variants. But not so common as some other places, sounds like. They still look really cool to me. Aggressive, and good proportions, and a nice stance. Wouldn't pay 100K for one though. My biggest gripe with modern muscle cars is how heavy they are even though they're fast. As far as 4 doors go, I get it... to a point. My first car was a '71 Cutlass, and I didn't go to look at 4 doors when I bought it. But those Dodges make 4 doors look good. Probably part of why they're so heavy. But pretty cool that you can have your styling, go fast, and take the whole family.

I did when you posted it, that’s why I said the hell kitties aren’t that hard to beat. That’s one heavy ass land yacht mopar beating another heavy but not as yacht-y mopar. The sound of that big block is heaven to my ears though!
Sorry I didn’t quote you directly, but my response was partially toward your post. |

The Prowler, and that other ugly car, can't remember the name, Chevy made one that looked like it...Yeah even recently Chrysler made ugly cars...
And True Chrysler made some of the most beautiful...Air Flow, Power Wagon, GTX, Monaco It would be hard to chose between '74 Buick Gran Sport or a '72 Roadrunner..... |

I agree I never understood the prowler at all. They could have at least made it fast. Granted go fast tech and meeting emissions hadn’t evolved like it has today but they were slow as hell.

Come to think of it, Plymouth was ahead of it's time in '61. They set the trend for today's front end styling with that go against the flow predator look
Attachment 2348779 Dodge helped, too, with the misaligned up/down cockeyed willy nilly headlights look Attachment 2348780 With so much focus on front end styling into the far future they forgot about tail lights. Eh, just stick these on Attachment 2348781 Same thing happened with the Valiant and just sticking pods on wasn't working out. Stylist were baffled until a cat hopped up on the window sill |
