A '62 has to get back on the road

Hello, I bought this '62 C10 with 350/350,
it has power steering and power brake.
Unfortunately, the sheet metal is in very poor condition
and needs attention. I've been reading this great forum
for a long time and I want to take this opportunity
to thank everyone who helped me with their reports.
I'll start:
There it is my new truck, the usual disassembly and all
for sandblasting

After sandblasting, all the holes showed up.

Let's move on, the corner of the roof
is the beginning.
And it was made out of 4 parts.
Roof, Gutterwall and Gutterfloor.
I hope the technical terms are correct.
The front edge of the roof also had to give way.

New sheet metal must be installed inside and outside above
the windscreen and on the passenger side above the door.
Recreating the inner post corner was very complicated,
I don't want to do it again

The outer panel fitted, unfortunately it is
almost 1/2" too short, so adjust it.
A little Bondo is necessary.
That looks better.

I've been retired for a while.
I didn't want to just look out the window
and am now rebuilding this beautiful
piece of American history.

Re: A '62 has to get back on the road

I like the stance before you tore it down. Will you be keeping it that way?
Great job on the repairs too. That rust was extensive

Yes, the truck gets a 63 front axle with 2.5" drop spindles
and 2" dropped springs, the torsion keys have already hit hard.
Closed a hole on the right side of the post,
opened the airvents to close the holes

Airvent closed again, that was necessary
on both sides.

The floor has to be completely renewed,
first build a support and cut out the rusty part,
not much is left.

Following along, love the stance of your truck. I always enjoy watching sheet metal work done well.

The frame above the driver's door also had to be replaced,
as did the corner of the roof, and patches were also put in on
the rear window.
Reinforcements for the belts have been placed

for the DeLuxe heater.
Eliminate dents on the back wall.

Very nice work on the rust and dent repairs!

I've been working a lot of the same issues for the past two years. Hope to finally start bodywork and paint soon.

After disassembling the doors, they were sandblasted,
the door bottoms and the outer skin were already badly damaged,
the truck must have had a hard life,
so first a new door bottom was put in,
then the outer skin was removed and the inside
(The second picture shows the passenger side, which was also added)
was painted with epoxy, the new outer skin got the door handle
reinforcement from the old outer skin,
installed and aligned the whole thing as a test.

The outer panel was held in position with self-tapping screws
and spot welds and reinstalled to check the gaps and
then flanged the edges and reinstalled to check everything
after that the long weld, step by step welded.
What else did I do..... the rearview mirror mounting holes
were wrong, too far forward and have been corrected.

The door fits well, the gaps look good,
I adjusted the gaps that were
too wide by welding.
Then the passenger side started.

Adjust rear mirror holes again.
Check the gaps again, then spot weld step by step again,
which weld to wide gaps.

Now the finishing work, grinding off the long weld seam
and eliminating the dents from welding as far as possible,
then smoothing with Bondo.
Assemble everything for testing and be happy that it worked well.

The two fenders got patches and the holes in the decorative strip welded shut were fixed, there were quite a few. Fixed a patch and the reinforcement plate in front.

The two inner fenders were rusted through at the front and were repaired with patches

Re: A '62 has to get back on the road

I'm done with the major welding work for now. What is still missing? That's right...... the hood and the rear panels, I'm still a little scared because they hardly have a straight spot, they're so dented, I was a bit scared after the sandblasting. The doors and fenders are now being prepared for painting, as is the Cab, of course.
Gruß Harald
