Rusty 68 K20 Burb
Picked up this 68 last Friday. She is pretty rusty, but I saved her from the scrappers or just rotting away on a farm.
I picked her up cheap, she was actually a gift from my 4x4 buddies because they knew I always wanted a slant nose 3 door. The plan is to use her as a family wagon/wheeler. I want to swap the frame with my 78K20 Burb with a 350/465/205 and 60/14 Combo with 4.56's and a detroit in the rear. I want to exo cage her and protect what body is left. Pic's coming. |

It would appear that someone swapped out the tailgate for barn doors. http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m.../IMG_07301.jpg It also is going to need a heater box. |

Sweet looking burb, bet that straight six fires right up. Even when they are old, rusty and beat up those chevy's still look good.

Re: Rusty 68 K20 Burb
Love that grill guard, Why the frame swap?, All the running gear should bolt in I would think, besides the offset 292 mounts.

Re: Rusty 68 K20 Burb
That grill guard is sweet!

Re: Rusty 68 K20 Burb
The 78 already has a beef tubular engine crossmember, beefier frame, reinforced steering box area longer springs,(all the fuel and brake lines are rotted on the 68)power brakes. What's a few body mounts..........

The previous owner said the bumper was original, but I have a hard time beliving that with all the dents in this rig. Although the grille guard may be rusty, it's straight. http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m...b/DSCN9062.jpg I will be tossing that in the pile of unused stuff, I have 2 other winch bumpers that I am going to test fit and see if I don't have to fab one. The old warn on my 78 would fit but it's not strong enough for what I am going to use it for. |

That sum ***** was dirty, and she pretty much looks the same. Except I can see the rot now.

Re: Rusty 68 K20 Burb
sorry about the language, I'll keep it down.
So in my blind awe when buying this I failed to see the rot before I purchased. I still would have bought it, it just sucks that I missed seeing it. Hey, it was dark, raining, and I had been sitting in traffic for hour and a half more than I expected. I had a itchy trigger finger. |
Re: Rusty 68 K20 Burb
That thing is shot ......... Looks worst than my green burb ! I might have another tub I might sell on the cheap.

Re: Rusty 68 K20 Burb
I would get it running and put a reliable heater in it. Then drive it for a few thousand miles and see how the body holds up. If the body mounts are shot and the floors are real bad it might not be worth saving.
Look for a G86 on the glove box door. I think that denotes a Detroit locker. with a little work you can install power steering, and power brakes and even put front discs on the closed knuckle front axle. I would be inclined to keep that six if it is a 292. Is the Rockwell married to the SM420? The only draw back to the Rockwell is parts availability. The rear intermediate shaft bearing retainer is aluminum as I recall and I wore one out. It was tough to find a replacement. |
Re: Rusty 68 K20 Burb
I have no plans to use any of the drivetrain. Not even the frame. It will eventually find a good home, somewhere else.
It's a 292ci 6cyl, sm465, Rockwell t-case. Closed knuckle Dana 44, Eaton Rear. |
Re: Rusty 68 K20 Burb
If my recollection is correct the 68 is on a 127" WB and the 73-91 Suburbans are 129". Not a big difference, but something to consider.

Re: Rusty 68 K20 Burb
No updates yet. Just a ton a rain. I emptied this can nov 16th and this is a shot from how full it was last week. It has since filled up more.http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m...2c8efba60e.jpg
We really needed the rain. |

Actually it's not too bad underneath. I only have one mount that might give me a problem. Pass Front http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m...dd60c05aee.jpg Driver Front http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m...0f4843062d.jpg Pass mid ship http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m...2ab6592e2e.jpg Driver mid ship http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m...194bb992e0.jpg The rears look to be just as good as the rest. As far as the rear locker. I can't read the tag, it is too damaged. It doesn't really matter to me, I guess it could matter to the next guy. I will inspect it before I part with it. Power steering and power brakes will come with the other chassis. I am not even going to bother with the closed knuckle/drum brake dana 44, I got a dana 60 that's going to take it's place. My bad, it's a 465/rockwell combo. Not going to use that either. I have a 465 to a twin sticked 205. The plan is to eventually run a auto with a 203/205 combo. |
Re: Rusty 68 K20 Burb
Just made the call for the steel for the rocker/floor replacement. Looks like some 2"x6" .250wall is finding a home there as rock sliders.
Cheaper than replacement panels that are just going to get ruined anyway. |
Re: Rusty 68 K20 Burb
So the real issue that is still bothering me is the upper windshield piece. Do I have to cut this piece out of a existing truck or do they make a replacement panel for that?

Yup, that's the one. I am trying to determine if I need the roof section too. I am afraid to remove the windshield until I have a replacement, I am worried that some of the lip that the windshield and seal rest on might be rotted also. |
Re: Rusty 68 K20 Burb
Christmas score from my sis in-law. She lives up in Medford OR where there are a ton of parts for my truck. I make 3-4 trips up there a yr.
I mentioned that needed a pair w/springs for my burb and she found a set for $20 http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m...b70b73bd98.jpg |
Re: Rusty 68 K20 Burb
So this thing pretty much needs everything interior wise, minus the Gauge cluster and column. So I randomly decided to swing by the local junk yards and look around.
Score! Non-A/C interior heater box with seal. $23 There was a 67 C10 short bed that was there. Fairly rusty but not nearly as bad as most. Typical scum bags took the hood off and threw it on the ground upside down, where many people had stepped on it walking by. Sad...... It get's better. Someone wanted some grille and rad support parts and never unbolted the fenders from the cab end. They folded the fenders down ruining them. Once again, rusty, but use-able before some dip**** came around and f'd them up. It was missing the doors, front suspension, grille, and interior. http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m...0a7f94ca28.jpg |
Re: Rusty 68 K20 Burb
Scored a few good items off another Board member here.
Thanks Vova. 3rd Door, minus regulator, trim, door panel, handles and crank. It's got good sheetmetal, glass and door latch. http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m...fa776cc3f4.jpg http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m...87b71848ce.jpg Cowl and Radiator. http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m...cc545e55fc.jpg http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m...8542bf9330.jpg |

So far the biggest $$$$ item is the 125+ft of 2"x.120 wall DOM. The drivetrain is covered for now. The donor truck is losing the 350/sm465/twin stick205, and 4.56 geared 60/14 combo to the 68. I got 38.5" sx's on H1's and I hope to recenter and ad some rock rings soon. I got most of the steering stuff, just need a psc pump and tap my box. I am going to run EMF's double ended hydro assist kit to keep the big tires turning on the trail but still be street legal. |
Re: Rusty 68 K20 Burb
So far the best place around me to find parts is Vintage Chevy in Fremont ca. They have thousands of take off parts for 67-72 trucks. I can tell already that bill is going to end up with a lot of my cash.

Re: Rusty 68 K20 Burb
First wave of new parts...
New Windshield and seal. http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m...c3e927e57c.jpg We are going to find out how bad that window frame is. Luckily I have a truck cab available to cut some of it out. Does anyone know if the lip on the top of the frame is the same to the side(A) pillar? Mine is rotted out on the upper portion but the cab available to cut only has good side portions. |
Re: Rusty 68 K20 Burb
Here is what's left of the parts cab that I can get stuff off. I needed a small section of the lip, where the seal rides on.
http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m...e8fbff2f49.jpg Can I cut out the A pillar sections and use them on the top? http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m...f35735aaf2.jpg Thanks everyone for the info. |
Re: Rusty 68 K20 Burb
I got a few Q's on replacement floor panel sections. My burb is rotted out from the section where your heels go from the front, all the way to the section where the floor steps up and becomes the rear section. It is around a 3" wide section on both sides. I am having trouble figuring out what panels are avalible.
On Gmcpauls site i think I need the Front floor patch panels L&R #132278 Rear outer cab floor panels L&R #132280 Outer cab floor extensions L&R #3648249 Does this make sense? Did I miss something? Any help is appreciated. |
Re: Rusty 68 K20 Burb
Probably should mention that the rotten section is on the outer portion of the floor right at the door seal lip. I don't need outer rocker panel sections since I am putting rectangle tubing there, but I need the sheet metal from the door seal seam and in from a 1" and up to 5" from some spots.
|
Re: Rusty 68 K20 Burb
So I think I figured out what I need, that is available.
I ended up ordering the inner-upper windshield panel, Front floor pans, outer cab extensions, door pillar support, inner kick panel, and front cab support. Brothers was out of the upper inner panel so I got it from LMC, everything else came from GMCpauls. Lot's of work ahead of me. |
Re: Rusty 68 K20 Burb
I got the windshield out. It's not as bad as I was thinking, but it's not as good as I was hoping.
Thought's as to where to go from here? I got a week before my body guy gets back from KOH. Strip it down to metal, paint it and put the windshield back in? http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m...3d55749472.jpg http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m...mage.jpg19.jpg http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m...mage.jpg16.jpg |
