1964 Sleeper | 5.3 | 75mm turbo | Caged | 4 Link
After my dad and I finished our first project, a 76' step side I decided I wanted to do a build of my own. We built the 76' when I was 15-16 and I learned a ton building it, now 17 I want to take on my own project. I bought the 64' for $100, a deal I couldn't refuse. The cab was fully rusted out, but I'm up for the challenge. I had a hard time deciding which direction to go with the build, but I eventually decided building a nasty sleeper was the best option. I picked up an iron block 5.3 and a borgwarner s475 turbo. This combo should be good for 650-700rwhp. The 5.3 will remain stock except for a cam, springs, head gaskets, and head studs and the full stainless turbo system ill be building. Going to run a th400 and a 12bolt out of 2006 silverado, as well as a roll cage and 4 link/coilover rear suspension. All the welding and fabrication will be done by me.
The 76' https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3894/...2c928f61_c.jpg 1976 C-10 by Jesse Rieger, on Flickr Now for the 64, heres what I started with. http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/...psgucciyjm.jpg http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/...psyeajbavs.jpg http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/...pssgyl19i3.jpg http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/...psu2iavidu.jpg http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/...ps9zgg4m2j.jpg It was pretty rusty so I started with the rockers and cab corners http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/...ps83zfaatn.jpg http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/...psgr9jamnp.jpg http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/...psfjudp741.jpg And the fun bits, the 5.3.. http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/...psbcrhvy5d.jpg http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2cedcdcf.jpg And the hefty 75mm turbo. I built a bracket out of some left over 4130 cromo to support all 50lbs of turbo. http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/...psfatjxwpy.jpg http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/...psnbodxg0g.jpg http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/...psdf0ezoox.jpg http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/...psvgsivz6l.jpg http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/...psi5l5bcqs.jpg To get a break from rust repair, I started on the frame. I shortened it 8" in front of the wheel and 5" after to make it a medium length bed, which I think will suit the style of build I'm going for. http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/...psyqoix9dk.jpg http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/...psh6qcnhu2.jpg http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/...psq5nidwwt.jpg Next on the list was the rear suspension, Im currently fabricating a full custom 4 link. Should be finished up by the end of the weekend. Jesse, cool looking build for the 64, boosted LS should be real nice!!! Do you have a build thread for the 76, I would love to see that one. That truck has the SLEEPER look to me. Good luck and I'll be checking in.

Re: 1964 Sleeper | 5.3 | 75mm turbo | Caged | 4 Link
Thanks everyone! Lots of hours on the tig are finally starting to pay off. Got the rest of the 4 link components cut out today. Takes a while to cut the 1/4" with only a band saw but I think they turned out pretty good.

Like captn fab says keep it up man. For being 17 that's dang impressive. Took me years to even be remotely good at tig. The world needs more Welders. Primarily in TIG. Subscribed also

Re: 1964 Sleeper | 5.3 | 75mm turbo | Caged | 4 Link
I decided on just a roll bar instead of a full cage since it will primarily be driven on the street. Made some progress on the main hoop and mounting plates.
There will be a tube that mounts to the frame and bolts to the plates. http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/...psus3gjbtw.jpg http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/...pse6le1qh7.jpg This was my first time bending tube so I'm pretty happy with the results. Tubing is 1-3/4x .120 wall DOM http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/...psnoob6egk.jpg http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/...pstjpoyryf.jpg |

Re: 1964 Sleeper | 5.3 | 75mm turbo | Caged | 4 Link
Thanks everyone! finished up the roll bar a few days ago so I put the cab back, now I can fab up the pieces the attach the roll bar to the frame.
http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3dqu8h4v.jpg Notching was done with a regular drill press and hole saw. http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/...psmrffbfmv.jpg http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/...ps27isgids.jpg http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/...pshqtk2hq1.jpg http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/...psrjfg1gnb.jpg http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/...pskxg2dler.jpg http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/...psea1jofi2.jpg Wasn't really going for nhra legality on this roll bar but rather something to add some safety for the occasional days at the track without making it more dangerous to drive on the street. http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/...psyc21puzy.jpg http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/...psmreyz3qw.jpg |
