1962 stepside project by realvc

This little stepside was found on Craig's List not far from my home. After checking it out we made a deal on it and the project began.

I use the word project because the plan for now is to make the most needed repairs and not do a frame off restoration.

It needs a lot but for now I'll make sure it will start, stop and go. Then on to the rest of it's many needs.

The basics are it is a short wheel base stepside with a 6 cyl. three on the tree.

It is pretty much all there without being modified over the years. There is the usual rust but not as bad as some I've looked at.

The bench seat is still there. It has a new gas tank installed by the previous owner and there is a new widow regulator for the driver's door that needs to be installed and new door seals and sill plates were included with the deal.

I think the truck was green from the factory and has a beige or fawn interior.

There will be pictures coming when I figure out how to do it.

When I made the trip to buy the truck I left my phone at home so did not get any pictures like a I planned and now every time I think about taking a picture I've got grease and grime all over and don't want to handle my camera/phone.

So there you have it for now.

Purchased Wed. Sept. 28, 2016

I just remembered this, my wife took a picture of the truck setting in yard after I had unloaded it without me knowing. The next day she was showing it to all the guys where she works and even the women, everyone loved it and had an old truck story to tell. I was totally surprised when she told me. She said it was fun to see all the men's reaction to the truck.

Cab corner rust, rocker rust, not as bad as some and worse than others. Seat is pretty good considering it is 54 years old.
The truck is green under the primer not sure it is the original color because of the paint on the door jambs.

This is a flickr test so some pics. are dupes.

O.K. so I've got another learning curve to deal with.
Anyway I've got a truck and I've got pictures too and I've got a project thread on the forum so that accounts for some progress anyway.

Still trying to sort out the rear drum brakes among many other needs on this Stepper. The road goes on forever and the party never ends.

Re: 1962 stepside project by realvc

The rear brakes have been a real poser. Finally figured out the the emergency/park brake cables were rusted and not releasing causing the brakes to lock up on right side and to be very tight on the left even with the adjusters backed all the way off. Disconnected the cable system for now.

The battery was dead because I had left the battery cables connected and a hot wire was grounded out so the road goes on forever and the party never ends.

Took care of the grounded wire, charged the battery got it started.
I unstuck the seat tracks and installed a new choke cable while the battery was charging.

Got the oil bath air cleaner apart and cleaned up some.
Picked up and cleaned up some of my mess so I could shut down for the night.

I have a leak at my right rear wheel cylinder now from taking it off and putting it back on the last time I must have cross threaded the line. Fun, Fun, Fun.

Re: 1962 stepside project by realvc

I've been dealing with a leaking wheel cylinder thinking I had cross threaded the steel brake line and would have to replace the line and may be the wheel cylinder.

After getting the truck back up on the lift to where I could check it out I removed the line and it looked O.K. so I put it back on bled the brakes. I cleaned up everything and left it up on the lift so I could keep an eye on it during the day.

It turned out to be the wheel cylinder leaking inside the drum, running down the backing plate and the brake fluid dripping onto the rim and runs down the sidewall of the tire. The outside of the backing plate stays dry around the bleeder and brake line connection.

Ordered a new wheel cylinder under warranty. I'm getting a lot more drum brake experience than I really wanted.

Re: 1962 stepside project by realvc

Got the new wheel cylinder on and still had a leak.
My shade tree mechanicin' is not what it should be.

After taking the steel line off again checking everything I decided that I just did have the line tight enough so I cranked it down really tight. It still seeped a little over night so I tightened it so more thinking it is getting close to twisting off.

The drivers side went back together with no problems and did not require near the tightening of the brake line.

No leak now and it has been a few days. I did fess up to the NAPA guys that the wheel cylinder I returned was not defective.

The truck is still on the lift for now as I've been doing other little pittleing things like cutting a half inch thick piece of iron off the back bumper some previous owner thought was a good idea for an extention for mounting the hitch ball.

Also been gathering the parts to reinstall the drivers side window and regulator other needed repairs.

Re: 1962 stepside project by realvc

Before you begin questioning your mechanicin' skillz, keep in mind new parts and 54 year old mating parts may not always work together so well... New parts can be defective and those 54 year old brake lines may be a bit worn...:mm:
Hang in there Brother, you will came out victorious...;)

Close up of the big old iron plate I cut off.
Truck is off the lift for now and I can start it up and move it in and out of the shop and around the yard.

Baby steps of progress.

Your truck is a lot like mine, in that it needs a few parts replaced. But yours has a horn button, didn't get one when I bought mine.

Good luck on your project, I'll be watching this thread.

This truck is pretty much complete but the needs are many. I keep trying to decide if I should replace stuff or repair it or just let it alone.

Thanks for your reply.

Drove the truck up the drive way and down the street. The six is weak and has a bit of a knock when winding out the gears. Not sure but sounds like a rod.
I was kind of warming up to the idea of leaving the six in it but now I'm not so sure.

I've got a small block sitting on an engine stand that needs a home.

The more I work on this truck the more I find that needs to be done.

Guess I'll jump in the deep end and go for disc. brakes, five lug, power brakes and V8, change out the rear to a five lug as well.

Spent yesterday(Friday) purchasing and picking up a 1982 donor truck.
Long story short the new 82 is home but what a deal to get it here.

It has a later 350 with Edelbrock carb and intake, hedders, and a turbo 350.

My plans have gone way away from I had intended to do.

It has been raining here all day so I'll just post the Craig's list pictures. These pictures are at the previous owners home.

Some more detailed pics. to follow at another time.
