Lost My 65
What the perfect site!
I've been reading for weeks. Now I just need to find my lost love. I sold my 65 back in 86/87 and want to find it bad. Shortbed Stepside - 283. I have the Plate Number and VIN. Any suggestions on how to track it down? I called DMV, and they said it's still driven locally and has registration until 2012. Thanks again for such a great forum. . Pic taken around 1985 http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/...rumNOPLATE.jpg . UPDATE: Found Her and bought her back! . Here is a pic the previous owner took of it back in 2004: . http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/...004noplate.jpg . Pic taken when I went to see her for the first time in 25 years - 2/2012 http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/...8148802975.png . And a more recent pic - July 2014 http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/...psfcd9qr0s.jpg . Last 2014 pic for the year. http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/...psnyjpyuv6.jpg |

Welcome aboard & good luck with your quest.

Re: Lost My 65
Welcome to the board. Good luck on the search for your truck. Is there any way you can go down to the court house and ask for the last registered owner?
|
Re: Lost My 65
My best advise to you is to get in good with someone in law enforcement of criminal justice and have them run the plate # or VIN and see what they come up with. Good luck.

Re: Lost My 65
First of all......:welcome2:
Knowing that the vehicle is still local to you is a huuge advantage, it narrows your search from a needle in a haystack to a needle in a bale of hay. Here are some ideas: Post up some pictures here on our website. |
Re: Lost My 65
Welcome aboard from Maryland. That would be great if you could find your old truck and get it back. I am wishing you the best.

Re: Lost My 65
Thanks for all the great suggestions.
I Just bought a 66 to give myself something to do until I find it. I now have a pic of my Lost65 as my Avatar. Here's a larger pic: http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/...rumNOPLATE.jpg |
Re: Lost My 65
It may look rough from the outside, but the interior was sweet.
Lots of Chrome. I had switched all the knobs and gearshift and ashtray handle with oak. The seats looked almost like factory buckets, the center seat lifted up to give access to storage under. Honestly, the interior was done, the 283 was rebuilt, and I had moved on to the body. Needed the money, had a corolla for transportation, so sold it to some girl who worked at NAPA Auto Parts. I asked them if they knew who she was. They said not someone from 20 years ago, and couldn't tell me even if they did. I understood. Yep, need a cop friend. |
Re: Lost My 65
What! A shortbed stepper with the small back window and aluminum slots.... sweet! Love the rake / stance... screams old-school.
Was it painted or red-oxide primer? Looks like non-std tailights, do you remember what they were? |
Re: Lost My 65
Primer Red-Oxide.
Guess what? :D The Taillights were from a 65 Fleetside. - So Cool. |
Re: Lost My 65
Fleetside tailights on a stepside... I gotta believe that should be easy to find if the new owner left them. Sounds very interesting. Got any better photos, maybe in warmer times?

Re: Lost My 65
It's the only picture I found.
I think I have 1 more taken in summer, but haven't found it. All the other pics are of it tore down to frame when I built it back up. I'll see if I can find them and post them. |
Re: Lost My 65
PM me the plate # and vin and I'll see what I can find, but I live in WA so I don't know if I'll be able to tell you much. I'll try though.

Here is one after I got my cab onto the 62 shortbed frame. Picture taken: 04-02-1984 http://i55.tinypic.com/2i1jcpv.jpg |
Re: Lost My 65
Kind of like seeing an ex girlfriend after 30 yrs. Your present memory of her is the same but the reality may scare the beans out of you. Make that step-side your own. Very cool truck. Welcome to the board!

Re: Lost My 65
Yes,
Honestly, the more I work on my 66 I have now, the less I'm concerned about finding her. Like you say, I remember her as oh so beautiful, and she may have very well let herself go. |

Re: Lost My 65
I just noticed in the pic above that you can see the FleetSide taillights in the StepSide fenders. I thought they really looked nice.

Re: Lost My 65
I still haven't found my ol' 65. :(
|
Re: Lost My 65
If you produced paperwork that proved you owned the truck at one point, could they state/county give you a name and address to contact the current owner? Then send the guy a letter.
|
Re: Lost My 65
I had the same issue finding my 76 Camaro rs.
I had the VIN number and the old plate number, but the DMV refused to help me. Something about the information being dangerous. What I ended up doing was I hired a Private Investigator, make sure you get one that is both bonded and insured with a license. They can get access to the current owner's address name and phone number. Unfortunately I found out my car had been wrecked two years after I sold it. But he did give me the name of the owner and where it was crashed, a copy of the accident report and everything. Its a real shame but hopefully you'll get better news. |
Re: Lost My 65
Sounds like you should hit all the local car shows and cruise nights. Look under every truck you come accross. Can't be too many 65's with torsion bar chassis' under them. That'll identify it for shure. Start cruising neighborhoods too. You might have to become a "stalker" of sorts.
Good Luck with your quest..... |
Re: Lost My 65
Sorry to hear about your loss, I still cry myself to sleep over stupidly selling my 69 C10 396 With a T5......sob...sob...sob :..(
|
Re: Lost My 65
Get a car fax report on it and it will help narrow the search. It will show when it has changed hands and where.

Sounds like a plot for Law and Order. :mrt::fro::tim: ---> :ack: I'd go with the PI angle and just send them a letter once you find out. Last time I bought a PI it was about $240.00 so it's not stupid expensive if you give enough info and find one that's pretty laid back. |
Re: Lost My 65
I wish I took pictures of the stuff I did way back when. So many cars and projects they turn into a blur after a few years. Now I take pictures so I can remember how to put stuff back together.
|
Re: Lost My 65
Shoot, I just about have to take pictures of where I store stuff so I can find it when I'm ready for it.
