AD Truck Project
I decided to start a build thread for my project. There has not been a whole lot done to it, but I will add information as it progresses. The hope is to build a really low, loud and simple truck that I can cruise, and hopefully be reliable enough to drive to work some as well.
A little background. I have about a 49 3 window gmc on a s-10 clipped frame. I have most of the front end and most of the bed minus rear fenders. I then picked up a 51 chevy 5 window cab, a running board, another gmc hood and grill. So the plan is to build about a 51ish 5 window gmc. Right now the motor will probably just be a 305 with a small cam, and a turbo 350 to get started. Down the road if I can afford to go the LS route I would love to. I have the 5.3 in my 04 crew cab and like it a lot. For suspension the front clip already answers the disk brakes, and power steering question I would like to bag at least the front to start with and maybe do mono leaf and bag in the rear. This build will be in parts, so the common denominator is getting the body straight and then getting it running. If funding allow after that I may do a triangulated 4link. For wheels I would love to do 17in steelies but will probably do 15in to start with, or whatever is handy a the time. Anyways, as Joe says, Yall like pictures! So here are a few. http://lh3.ggpht.com/_HLeOfaLeb9s/Sp...2018.48.49.jpg Don't worry this was a very temporary arrangement till I built my cab dolly. http://lh4.ggpht.com/_HLeOfaLeb9s/Sp...2019.05.47.jpg http://lh6.ggpht.com/_HLeOfaLeb9s/Sp...2019.04.31.jpg One of the doors that came with the 5 window cab. It had all good glass except the windshield. http://lh3.ggpht.com/_HLeOfaLeb9s/Sy...2019.10.27.jpg |
Re: AD Truck Project
Now for my first update lol.
We started working on the fenders awhile back. They had what seemed like a 1/4 of bondo on them. It turned out one was a gmc and one was a chevy. The passenger side fender was the rougher of the two and I may try to find another one that is not as rough. http://lh6.ggpht.com/_HLeOfaLeb9s/Sy...2019.00.22.jpg Passenger side http://lh6.ggpht.com/_HLeOfaLeb9s/Sy...2019.37.40.jpg Driver side The driver side has since been welded on some and put in etching primer. There are a few places that need work but we wanted to get it covered instead of it just rusting. Luckily my garage doesn't seem to hold much moisture. I do not have any pics of it, but I pretty well gutted the interior of the 5 window cab. At a swap meet back in October I picked up another good gmc hood, gmc dash center piece, passenger side running board, and a gmc grill minus the ends pieces. |

Re: AD Truck Project
Thanks 1950 GMC. I have been reading every thread I can for knowledge and inspiration.
Friday I took off half a day to have the plumbers come by and to enjoy one of the last few decent days before it starts getting colder. Somewhere along the way my 5 window cab received a motorcraft electric wiper motor. It was bolted to the main support for the dash, behind the gauges. http://lh3.ggpht.com/_HLeOfaLeb9s/Sy...2014.54.46.jpg Today it was nice again, so I pulled out the swing pedal that had been sorta welded to the same dash brace, and then cut out the firewall where someone had hacked it up putting the booster mount through. I then mocked up my grill shell with the fenders. http://lh4.ggpht.com/_HLeOfaLeb9s/Sy...2016.14.17.jpg http://lh4.ggpht.com/_HLeOfaLeb9s/Sy...2016.32.45.jpg You can kinda see where I cut out the bad spot on the firewall. The plans for the firewall is to shave any unneeded holes. I forgot to mention my frame, 3 window cab, and bed are about 100 miles away. One day I hope to get the major pieces all in the same place. |
Re: AD Truck Project
I dig what you've got going on. Keep up the good work and the pix comin'.

Re: AD Truck Project
Good looking start man. Just keep the progress going. Even slow progress is progress. Looking forward to updates. Also, thanks for the pics! :D

Re: AD Truck Project
Thanks guys. I do believe just about everyone from the Oklahoma Delegation has posted LOL.
We have been working on my dads 52 sedan for about 4 years now off an on as time, money, and health have allowed. Usually working on it will push my truck out of the way. I really want to get his car on the road so he can enjoy it. |
Re: AD Truck Project
I'll chime in as the 3rd non-Oklahomian to tell you I can't wait to see more! Looking good!

Re: AD Truck Project
Thanks Ben.

Re: AD Truck Project
Not much to post about lately. Today I did get inner fenders, another running board and the panel that goes between the bed and the running board. I will be getting some stock gauges in the near future too.
This week is supposed to be unseasonably warm, so I need to try and get some work done. |
Re: AD Truck Project
Amen!

Re: AD Truck Project
No one is allowed to "wish" for snow anymore this year lol. My stupid gas bill is biting into my funding.
|
Re: AD Truck Project
Yeah dont you just love that.... got my elec bill mastered but the gas bill in the winter sucks!
|
Re: AD Truck Project
I put both my elec, and gas on the average billing thing. They don't shoot up drastically that way. It works out pretty good. You pay pretty close to the same amount each month. It lets me budget a little easier with no surprises.

Re: AD Truck Project
I have my electric on that and will be calling tomorrow to get the gas bill on it.
I got a few more parts this weekend. I got inner fenders, another running board, and the passenger side piece that goes between the running board and the bed. They need a little work but the price was right. |
Re: AD Truck Project
Cool Project! Nice meeting you today.:chevy:

Re: AD Truck Project
Nice meeting yall too. Hope we can all do it again sometime, maybe it will be a bit warmer.

Re: AD Truck Project
I got to work on my cab a little this weekend. I patched the big hole in the fire wall. It is not bad considering I have pulled the trigger on a welder 4 times now. I also tipped my cab on the firewall so I can take a look at the bottom. There are only a few holes to patch. Most of the work will be on the cab corners and the area in front of the doors.
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_HLeOfaLeb9s/S1...2015.07.30.jpg I then started bolting up my inner fenders. To recap I have one gmc and one chevy fender. The inners are off a chevy. The chevy bolts up fine, but the inner on the gmc fender was a bit off. So, looks like more research. I then started bolting up the parts for the grill, core support and latch. That is when I noticed my core support has been modified previously. |
Re: AD Truck Project
Cool man yeah any progress is a step closer to the cruise day ;)
Yeah was nice meeting you too, im sure there will be more get togethers in the future now that there are more people around here :metal: |
Re: AD Truck Project
Same here. It was pretty much a mini meet Saturday.
|
Re: AD Truck Project
It was nice to finally put a face to the name. Keep cracking on the project man! If nothing else we'll have to start having the mini meets end at someone's house to help with their projects.

Re: AD Truck Project
Cant wait to see progress!

Re: AD Truck Project
Me too lol.

Re: AD Truck Project
those core supports hold the whole front end together they have a tendency to fail. mine was missing 4" of metal in the middle, it probably fell off 15 years ago.... if you do repair it i would go a bit over kill it needs to be strong

Re: AD Truck Project
I bet that is what happened. There has clearly been metal added and it is too wide. The piece with the latch did not line up.

Re: AD Truck Project
First post to this thread, cool truck. Love the GMC, but I have a chevy 51' and actually bed, doors, fenders etc for a GMC, so I wanna do one.
Anyway I just read yesterday (don't know the link) to the differences in GMC vs Chevy. Back then there were differences. Such as longer engines thus making inner fenders different and frames longer. GMC were actually designed as a truck, more so than the chevy. So I am wondering if your rad support was from a chevy and someone put it on there and modified it? If I recall the GMC radiators were different as well, so the rad support was prolly different. I have two of them and I can take a look at them, one chevy one gmc. Can you take some pics of it? Also if you are mounting this to the chevy inner fender that might be throwing you off, try mounting to the gmc innner fender. Just an idea, I never worked with GMC stuff to this degree really and have yet to get to my front end stuff. You could just make your own too. subscribed |
Re: AD Truck Project
My stuff was not together just a pile when we got it. After taking the front fenders down I have 1 gmc and one chevy. My inner fenders are front a chevy. They fit the chevy fender fine and a little off on the gmc. So, that kinda supports your comment. If you could measure your core supports that would be great. I want to build a gmc, but I am still at the point if I end up with more good chevy parts than gmc I will switch.
|
Re: AD Truck Project
yeah, for sure I'll shoot some pics and measure the supports.
i know they looked different. I am pretty sure the first one I got was GMC cause that is what all the other parts were and a matter of fact I have one GMC inner fender. Too bad you weren't so far away, we could trade inner fenders! I'll try and get those pics in the next couple hours. |
Re: AD Truck Project
No rush.
I wonder if I had a full chevy clip minus the grill I could then use the gmc outer grill shell and then the bars. I know that part mounted the the chevy and gmc fenders just fine. |
Re: AD Truck Project
My cab corners have arrived. I knew they were here by the sound of them bouncing off the side of my house and landing on the porch. I guess the ups man is in a bit of hurry since we have freezing rain. I was happy to see how large the patches are. They should take care of my bad spots nicely.

Re: AD Truck Project
right on, but where are the pics ;)
