Bio

1 Attachment(s)
DennyB pm'ed me and asked for a Bio.

So here it goes.....

I was born in a small rural Alberta town......... oh you meant the truck!

The was purchased new in a small rural Alberta town, Wetaskiwin to be exact by a farmer. He also purchased a brand new GMC grain truck the same year. Fast forward to 1989 when I found it sitting a few blocks from my parents house. The truck had passed through two owners both hoping to fix it up prior to me purchasing it. I registered it back on the road as the second registered owner in the fall of 1989. Before putting it on the road I had to go over the mechanics of the truck and install new tires.

In 1995 my father and I pulled the engine out and took the head off. Realizing that it needed more than just a set of rings my brother spoke to the shop teacher at my high school shop, and he was more than happy to have the chance to rebuild a 235 I6. The high school students tore the engine apart, rebored it, rebuilt it, and reassembled it. I bought the parts and they did the labour. A great deal for both of us!

In 2002 I finally maded the decision to have the body painted, which turned into a frame off restoration. I did not want to paint the truck until I had found front signal lights, they are not reproduced and NOS are hard to find. I do not do body work so I found a hop that would. It started out as a simple paint job that got carried away. I was swapping cabs, so why not paint the frame. The frame was painted so why not repaint and detail the engine., etc, etc, etc........

The truck in a 1959 GMC 9314, which is a Canadian half ton short box stepside. Canadian GMC's have Chevrolet drivetrains, therefore it has a 235 I6, and 3 speed manaul transmission.

The truck is painted 2002 Chevrolet Truck light pewter. The box now has all stainless steel hardward, oak wood and still has tailgate chains, but the stake pockets were removed. The wheels are stock with 48-54 GMC hubcaps and the proper trim rings.

Inside it has an original seat that I found in a firetruck, the seat cover is still the original cover without any rips or tears. I have managed to find an original tach, AM radio and deluxe heater for the truck.

The truck was in Classic Trucks May 2004 Classic Cruisers and a feature article in the June 2004 Canadian Classic magazine.

I have included a before picture.

Any questions?

DennyB 10-04-2004 11:22 PM

I also Nominate cadman89

Come on people, We need a few more.
It is OK to nominate yourself ;)

cadman89 10-05-2004 09:36 AM

Hi Guys

Here is "THE PURPLE MONSTER"
"SHE" is a 1956 GMC series 100

My wife Kelly drives the truck all the time even though it has no power steering or power brakes.
I use her all the time for work. (The truck not Kelly) This past weekend I had her filled with cut up logs from a downed tree.
She has a late model 350 Chevy Engine with a Edelbrock Cam and 4-Barrel Carb.
The transmission is an Automatic hooked into the original column shifter.

http://12.158.117.40/scott/9_7_04/truck2.jpg
Why do I call her "THE PURPLE MONSTER" ?
Because "She" has an attitude and those little glass packs it makes her Growl.

Oh my. I could not compete agaisnt those beutiful machines. They are work of arts.
My truck is all oringial except paint, and hubcaps. It was bought From a guy who didn't know what he had. I picked it up for a song. The tailgate gate was welded on upside the motor was blowen.
pieces missing but to me it was a fantastic.
I happened to have a 235 that I pulled out of a 55 sub that I found in a bush (completely distroyed).
It is now all cleaned up most parts have been found and all the bolts tightened or replaced. The tail gate is right now. I drive it back and forth to work, pick up lumber, and do dump runs. Its not a princess its a TRUCK.

Ichevyluvr

Thanks, it took many years and very supportive wife to make this happen!

I have been to a couple of shows now and I am surprised how few original style trucks there are left.

Maybe you and I should plan to meet, with our trucks, next August long weekend in Saskatoon for SuperRun? I am hoping to get there.

rico_bob 10-07-2004 12:01 PM

(My vote is for Northern GMC) B-Cause I'm Having a "STAGE 4" Heart Attack! THAT HAS TO BE THE FINEST GMC RESTO-ROD I HAVE EVER SEEN! A+++++++++++++++++

You have my vote! My two cents worth!

Thanks for the nominations.

General
Manufacturer: Chevrolet
Year:1959
How long have you owned this truck?:Since May of 2003
History behind the truck:
I've been looking for a '55-'59 short step for several years...One of my best friends is a Dodge dealer, and one of his former salesmen runs a independant used car lot in a small town about 50 miles north of hear...they were talking one day and the former salesman said,"hey, guess what I took in on trade yesterday?", and my buddy said "I know someone who will buy it!"
I went up the next day to look at it and drove it home.
I drove it throughout the summer, then decided to start on the rebuild in Aug. of 2003.
It took one year and five days from pulling the engine on a Robins egg Blue stock Apache to the bright Red shaved and slammed mild custom pictured.
I didn't originally plan on doing it this fast, but as a couple of you know, this past May my Father was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer, and he really wanted to see the truck and ride in it. He was a retired Chevrolet dealer, so he was really interested in my project from the start.
In fact, I remember one night the phone rang around 10:45 pm, and my wife called me in to say my Dad was on the phone; I said "Hello?" and he said: "Hey Randy, are you going to use that new base coat clear coat paint on your truck?" (bear in mind he had been out of the car business for several years), "Yes" I replied. "OK, good" he said, and hung up.
Many times (before he got sick) he'd tell me that I had to take the truck back home to where he lived and where I grew up, to show "the guys" at the dealership the truck when it was finished.
The cancer was very aggressive, and he passed away this past August, but I did finish the truck before he died, and even though he was too weak to take a ride by the time I finished, he was still really excited to hear that I had it back on the road.
