bedliners for 73-87 swb discontinued?
i went to the local 4x4 parts dealer around here to buy a bedliner (under the rail) for my 86 swb, he called me a day later and said that they arent making them anymore?
so i called summit, they said basically the same thing what the he**? anyone else run into this problem? is there anywhere to buy one on the web? (shipping would prob be nuts:crazy: ) |
Re: bedliners for 73-87 swb discontinued?
They show up used regularly on craigs list and ebay and the trader.
I would call your local Leer truck shop to confirm. If they say they are discontinued, I would believe it!!! |

well, it comes down to personal preference.... .i just cant stand to sand a spray the bedliner on super nice GM sheet metal, i'd rather just throw in a bedliner, and not touch the sheet metal |
Re: bedliners for 73-87 swb discontinued?
yup,ran into that problem, finally found one.he said they wanted 200 something for it.i told him" i'm not paying 200 for 5 bucks worth of plastic".he said.."well you ain't getting no bedliner"..most of the used ones i found looked.well...used.so i bit the bullet and went spray in.local chevy dealer was running a 359 special, you can't tell it from linex and warranted forever.best of all it looks great.

Re: bedliners for 73-87 swb discontinued?
I agree w/magnethead...once that bedliner starts rubbin' on that paint and goes thru it, rustin' will begin. We've gotta guy here in Sulphur Springs that sprays the Line-X...it looks awsome and everyone I've know that used him said they love it.

Re: bedliners for 73-87 swb discontinued?
Have you considered a bed mat? I didn't think a spray in ;iner would fit the look of my 77 so I put a rubber bed mat in it. It does take the shine off the paint, but it won't rub through the paint like a drop in liner.
If it weren't for being concerned with the retro look I would go spray in...:) |
Re: bedliners for 73-87 swb discontinued?
But how does it lead to rust?
I had a bedliner put in my '06 short bed just after I bought it. Seems that since it is under the rail that water would be less likely to get to it than with out it. Since there isn't pine needles and dirt and crap to plug the drain holes it should drain out before it is able to cause damage? I like the look of of spray in but never thought it offered much protection to the metal. It keeps a bed that gets beat up looking good or makes a beat up bed look good but it doesn't protect it from getting dented. Quote:

Re: bedliners for 73-87 swb discontinued?
Condensation.
Pull a liner out of a truck that has been there several years and what you see will turn you against them forever. |
Re: bedliners for 73-87 swb discontinued?
I had a drop in liner in my old '95 Chevy (company truck). Every once in a while, the rear view mirror would go black and I'd look back to see the bed liner being sucked up out of the bed. At least a couple of the anchors were still holding! ;)
If it were me, I'd go with a spray-in liner or, if I had a cap, a bed mat or carpet kit. The drop ins will move with bed flex as you go down the road. True, it won't move much, but that 1/32" or so back and forth will add up over time. I've seen it. Good luck! Kevin |
Re: bedliners for 73-87 swb discontinued?
The hard plastic trash can bedliners are tough, there is no doubt about that, BUT the bed does get rubbed raw and the moisture does cause rust underneath it. I went to a spray in liner on all of my trucks and there is no despair here. I like them, maybe you will too.

Re: bedliners for 73-87 swb discontinued?
Also, something that the spray-in's have now, is colored dye. You have a yellow truck, they can put yellow dye in the bedliner chemical so you have a yellow spray in liner, and from far away, you can't really tell it's a spray in.

Example.........we drug home a 1 owner beat to hell 1974 C-10 4x4 last week. Original owner put the bed liner in it 20+ years ago. It was always stored outside and had NEVER been removed. When we puilled it out.....the bed looked brand new!!!! NO RUST....paint looked new. On the other hand I have pulled them out and there would be rust. |

They DO NOT protect against dents..like they claim. Way over priced. I dont like the way they look after some age. Chalky This is for a classic of course. Now if you have some old junker or a work truck......if you want to spend twice the money for a spray in instead of a bed liner.....go ahead. |
Re: bedliners for 73-87 swb discontinued?
There are other brands (Line-X and others) that say they don't fade. However if you are going to beat the H--l out of it, then who cares if it fades. Want a bed that doesn't dent, then buy a steel flat bed.

It doesn't matter what you have in your truck bed....you throw something in there hard and heavy enough, it's gonna dent it. I bought a Dodge dually from a friend of mine with 240K miles on it. They carried large drill heads that weighted ALOT in the back. That drop in liner might as well not have even been in there.

I have an under the rail with heavy duty ribs that I wouldn't take for simply because it is the reason I don't have a dented/beat-up bed, no matter how many motors and transmissions I haul. But as soon as I get the cash i'm going to put the spray on under it and inside the cab up about 8 inches, because like everybody said they do rub the paint off and if the pop in is dirty I will be able to slide it out and go somewhere with a clean truck. The other day I was doing searches on crazedlist and found a guy on craigslist that had a whole stack of brand new ones the only reason I didn't get an extra was because all the ones he had were for short bed !!! |
Re: bedliners for 73-87 swb discontinued?
I been looking for a used one in Albuquerque for a minute!

Re: bedliners for 73-87 swb discontinued?
A good place to check, is junkyards & pic-n-pulls. I have seen several while picking parts in the yards.

Re: bedliners for 73-87 swb discontinued?
Not to start a war with anybody about bed liners...
Here is my 2 cents worth. If you want to try and protect the bed from denting the hard plastic ones will give you the best protection. Will they protect it from everything? In a word no. If you want rust to form under the bed-liner get a hard plastic one as the bed liner will MOVE and chaff the paint causing the paint to wear off and a slight amount of moisture from condensation will cause it to rust. More cases of rust then not. Spray in if prepped properly should not grow rust underneath. Spray in has a tendency to fade over time. Spray in IMO does little to protect the metal in the truck bed from damage. |

I have had them all, and each one has their pros & cons. I have had the hard bed liner, and it did scuff the paint. It never did rust, because almost every year, I took the bed line out and cleaned underneath the liner. And I made sure all my drain holes were clear. Then I moved on to the spray in. Loved it. It was for my GMC Sonoma back in the day. It was a 2 tone Sea Foam Green, with the secondary color of grey on the bottom. I had the spray in bed liner color matched to the grey. Present day: My 86 C10 has a carpet bed liner. Bottom and up the side of the bed walls. But Big Red gets pampered these days. I don’t haul anything damaging. My 2006 Chevy Colorado, when I bought it used, already had the spray in bed liner. I wanted to get a Bed Rug, but a full cover rug was no longer available, so I just got the Bed Rug mat and tailgate mat. It sure is nice on the ole knees. I do have a cap on the Colorado, so the bed doesn’t get wet. I do haul a lot of seat cores, so it does get dirty, but it can easily be taken out a cleaned. I used a stock photo from bed rug.com. I don’t have a photo of mine. But I have had it for several years now and it has held up very well. |
