Need opinions on BFG Mud Terrains
 

I was thinking of getting some 35s for my shortbed 4x4 and was wondering what y'all thought of them.The truck is planning on atleast being driven on the road 4-5 days a week but still an offroader.I would get All terrains but my friends all run them on their trucks and they throw gravel all over the trucks if the rocks dont stick in the tread

I think they`re great for all-around use.Not the best off road.But,better on road than the tires that beat it off road(except MTRs).Picking up rocks?Keep your elbow in until you hit hiway speed.

I've had all-terrains on one of my trucks, and you're right about the gravel. especially crushed stone...they used to bounce off the roof and the rollbar when i hit 40mph after comming out of the pit. Not sure about Mudterrians though. A buddy of mine has them and likes them. They're not real nosiy, but have more "bite" than all terrains. hope that helps, Brad

I have Mud terrains on my shortbed. I really like them. They don't make alot of road noise and it would have to be a big stone to get stuck in the tread of one of them. Its not a good pick of them but mine are 32's.

I have never been impressed by them. Had a new set on my '72 and they wore out faster than any mud tire I've ever had- including Bias ply. And I never abused them hard on pavement. My truck was in excellent alignment, I rotated them often & they did wear even. They look great, but I think the cheaper knockoffs will bite & wear just as well. They don't clean out in gumbo worth a darn unless you use a lot of stupid pedal & have enough motor to turn some serious wheel speed.

I think I might try them...I probably will get different rims anyway and if I dont like the tires I will sell the combo and buy a different kind

I like my Mud Terrains. Only put about 4-5000 miles a year on this truck but these are about three years old. I rotate them once a year though they don't show any uneven wear.I know All-Terrains are good for 80,000. Had a few sets of those. They're awesome on the road but fill up with mud too quick offroad.

Look at the ProComp MT's as well. they have a very similair tread pattern and are usually much cheaper than the BFG's I've ran them for a while with pretty good tread life

I'm not sure why everybody gets hung up on BFG tires. For 35's the price is in the $190 a tire range. I thought about it and couldn't really justify the price. Did a little shopping on line and found Dunlop Mud Rovers to be very comperable to BFG MT's on everything but price. Found I could get them at my local Sams club for $125 per tire. Thats for a *Radial* 35x12.50 15. Not bias ply like some of the swampers (I know the BFG is a radial too). Just pointing that out because the radials are usually more the bigger the tire is.

I bought them almost 2 years ago now and the current price hasn't risen all that much at Sams. I couldn't be happier with them. For a mud tire they are almost as quiet as an all terrain, just a slight hum, but nothing close to a swamper. They do quite well in the mud, but I'm not into gumbo slinging just what I hit on the trail. They rock in deep snow and have proven to be quite grippy on the trail defalted down to 15 psi. A very good all around tire for a great price. And since I've had them they have worn really even. It's about time I rotated them again though..

Don't get caught up in the BFG thing. If you want to pay the price fine. If you want a decent tire that will do all the same that a BFG will, look at the mud rovers and save some coin.

Ive had nothing but good luck with the mud terrains. I had a set on my 01 cummins and got 70,000 miles out of them. My new 06 cummins has them on as well. Ive ran the pro comp mud terrains before and I got 25,000 miles out of them. Not really inpressed with them. I do know that the bfg mud terrains do ALOT better off road then the toyo mud terrains. Bfg mud terrains is all I will ever run on my daily driver.

I think it has to do with the name brand.....People would rather display "BFGOODRICH RADIAL MUD TERRAIN" than some other tire company if they have some money into their trucks but still use them as trucks,like I do,and many other people.People that dont care about how many dents or dings,or giant rust holes most likely dont care about the name of their tires,they care about how they function.The real need of them

My dad used to have good luck with Kumho Venture tires. Those things I swear would go anywhere. I remember when he got his first set on his old Ford, I said "Kum Ho tires, dad?". He said "Son, don't be a smartass". :lol:

I'll have to admit BFG is my favorite brand of tires but more times than not I opt for a cheaper tire. My 72 has BFG AT's on it but I bought then used and got a pretty good deal on 'em. I'd love to have some MT's for winter use but I'll probably get something that cheaper unless another good deal shows up.

Just curious because I tried to buy a set of tires, (for my Cavalier), at WalMart last summer and they wouldn't mount 'em because I wanted a size bigger than what the computer said it should have. Then they thought I was gonna buy the factory size and looked at me like I was stupid when I told 'em I'd get my tires somewhere else... More insurance BS.
Ended up getting them at a different place that had them mounted, balanced and out the door in less time than I spent at WalMart arguing with them.

I've owned different brand tires over the years. When I find something I like I stick with it. I use Cooper Tires on everthing I own now, and have now for about 10 years. Here is a pic of Cooper STT's. They are considered a A/T, but they are a grabbing tire. I love them.

That Cooper is a nice lookin tire! Looks like it would be a good "middle of the road" tire.

I have a set of 35 mud terrains on my 05 cummins and they work great. They do well off road as well as on road. I have used pro comp mud terrrains and was not impressed. They wore out fast.

I just put a set of 38 mickey mtz'a on my 72 and they are sweet. have not tried them offroad yet. When my BFG's wear out I may go with the MTZ's on my cummins as well. You won't be sorry with the BFG's

The tire jockeys over at Sam's didn't ask any questions or have any problems throwing my 35's on. They were removing my old 33's to put them on so it was a little more than the next tire size up and way more that what is listed as stock for a Blazer. I parked it out side, went in, told them what I wanted, paid & handed them my keys and went shopping for 2 gallon jars of pickles and the rest of the oversized crap they have there. Had them installed in under an hour and get this they even pulled the tire stickers off and scrubbed the blue crap off of the letters. (Thats the little details I like seeing done, people driving with stickers on the tread drive me nuts)

1969k10- To each his own. I used to be hung up on that kind of stuff at one point. Had to have BFG's on my Nova or what ever else I was driving. I realized that I was paying more for a name, When I could have an equally capable tire in all aspects of performance and save some coin for the next part of my build. Granted my Blazer is no show piece (far from it), if it was really nice I still would have bought the dunlops.

Heck I was so impressed on how my 35's worked, I bought a set of dunlop all terrrains for my 04 trailblazer. I saved $30 a tire over Goodyears and almost $80 to the same size set of Michielen's. To tell you what my dad went with the michielens on his Trailblazer and you can't tell the difference in ride.

That's what I'm after is performance without paying a preimum for a name. Buying tires for a name only is nothing more than a fashion statement. If you want an example of the performance of the dunlops, I've played follow the leader with DirtyLarry and his swampers and gone every where he has. Granted the 4ft drifts on last years snow run was the only place he went that I didn't. But that had a lot more to do with his gearing, lockers and big block grunt forcing his way through than tires did.

I'm not slamming anybody for running BFG's, if they have worked for you fine. They do seem make a decent tire, my only issue is selecting a tire because of the name and name only. That part just dosn't make sense to me.

I run Parnelli Jones Dirt Grips and they are awesome for mud and have excellent street qualities. They are not cheap though. My 38's balance out nice with regular weights.

I had 35" BFG M/T's on my Blazer since I bought it and I love them. Not too loud, great offroad and mudding. I ran A/T's up front for a little while and they sucked offroad, got full of gravel and mud way too easy. My buddy had ProComp M/T's that he really liked and had good luck with. I picked up a used set with like 50% tread on them cheap and have not bought brand new. Too steep but I usually run across a used set up here often.

you're the first person i've ever heard down them. i know several guys that got 50K out of a set of BFGs. granted, at 50K they could've been sold to a drag racer for slicks, but they still held up.

I`ve had two seperate instances with A/Ts where the casings failed and the tread twisted all around the side.I spend good money to get a serious off road tire that give ultimate performance.Otherwise,I save a couple bucksand gey rubber that can do anything the BFGs can do,but cheaper.No doubt,BFG A/Ts and M/Ts are the most popular and well known out there.I get as many miles out of my Kellys as BFGs.The Kellys,Dunlops,and Coopers are great alternatives.They are "name brand" old tire companies,too.All tires are made or owned by three companies.Only one is American.

I was going to go with MT's but found my AT's for $150 (for all 4) with only 1,000 miles on Ebay. They were only 33's though.

yep, got lucky and they were only down the road. He put them on Ebay with a BUY IT NOW for $150. I emailed him and talked on the phone...then bought them ASAP. Said he totaled his jeep and just wanted to get rid of them. Always gotta keep an eye open for those deals close to home.

I don't like the way they pick up little rocks but then some others will do that also. Saw some Pro Comps at work last week on a Dodge that looked really good for some off roading and highway. Mickey Thompson makes a lot of different treads now also.

I have had good luck with the BFG MTs, I like the 3ply side wall, thats saved my butt a few times( ecept for once which I dont talk about much...twich twich), but any way I have always gotten at least 40k out of a set, my buddy was running them on his truck and was driving abut 200mi a day, he consistently got 50k out of them. He tryed some yokohamas and only got like 25k out of them. I have tryed the mud rovers with good results but they are a tad louder. I must add though BFG mudds SUCK IN THE SNOW!!!!!! I mean bad, my 98 GMC would slid into the gutter at stop lights from the crown in the road! I went to allterains and had no trouble. I have swamper SSR Raidials on now and they are great in the snow, mud, ice, you name it, I have about 30k on them and they are about half way through the tread, but they are starting to wear faster now and have gotten louder.

I use to have 31" AT's on my S-10. It would drive up on a snow pile, then i'd floor it and it would dig its way down through the snow and find dirt...off I went. I like them for daily drivers.

i had bfg kms on my little s-10 crew cab and they did great in the snow and slop till they wore out . got the bridgestone dueler at revo on there now . the new cooper tire is suposed to be the newest and best thing . all the procomp tires are made by cooper .

I own 4 sets of bfg mud T/As right now, and I love em! I have been running them for 15 years. Let me tell ya the mud and snow can get pretty bad up here in oregon. I have them on my wifes dodge too.

I've had BFG MT's on 3 different trucks and was well satisfied. I'm running pro comps MT's on my current truck. At 25K miles I'm hoping to last thru summer before I have to replace them. The bfg's lasted at least 40k and 1 set over 50k. My next set I'll go back to the BFG's!
If you plan on wheeling at all, I'd stay away from the AT's. They don't compare.
