what's your ball and chain think?
the current modification thread has a few post's with comments on money.got me thinking about what other people's wives/girlfreinds think about their truck spending habits.my "kimo sawbe" as i like to call her is really pretty cool with it.she knows i'd give up food for 4 days to buy a chrome something or another, just wondering about others.might want to trade her in on a newer model someday.(just kidding dearest)

Re: what's your ball and chain think?
my wife loves the old cars and trucks and as long as im not taking anything away from what we need to survive shes cool with it.. she gets annoyed if i leave a project sit too long she likes to see progress
anything i do with my trucks tho is not really expensive the ex hated it all things with motors especially if i liked them |

LMAO! Well, I'm single and I'm trying to keep it that way long enough to graduate and drop every single cent into my truck for a year or so. or Plan B Just pick up a chick at the local Dragstrip  |
Re: what's your ball and chain think?
My wife absolutely isn't into car/trucks/anything automotive. Lets just say the 383 I'm building for the truck has sparked some colorful discussions, not to mention the countless mods to the camaro & sportbike. Something about putting a $5k motor in a truck I payed $1500 for doesn't compute with the level of estrogen in her head.

Re: what's your ball and chain think?
I'm like old Rusty, Whenever I'd work on my rides the ex would :blah: and after 5yrs. I finally told her this was :bs: and I'm out a here :burnout:.....
The lady friend I have now will spin wrenches right along side of me  and has even bought me some parts for my project truck. |
Re: what's your ball and chain think?
Ha! Nice trade in

Re: what's your ball and chain think?
My wife of five years has never said anything about what I spend on my projects. It probably helps that I drive older rigs so I have no payments and I did buy my step-kids cars (all three of them) and maintain them as well. And she doesn't mind driving them. Now my first wife.........

Re: what's your ball and chain think?
I'm with you SWB85! My wife absolutely isn't into anything automotive either, and she certainly doesn't understand the money a project consumes. Every year, we attend the Portland, OR Swap meet in April. I should say "I" attend. My wife drops me off at the gate and spends her day at the local malls. When we meet up later for dinner, I am usually excited to show her all the stuff I scored and I get the same ol' "who cares" stare!

Re: what's your ball and chain think?
My fiancee is kool with what i spend if she ever say's anything i allways tell her well i can allways start drinking again and go to the titty bars and really waste my money and that usually does the trick.
Some times she gets jealous of the truck and says you spend more time with that "Black *****" thats what she calls the Truck than you do with me. But i hope things dont change when we get married. |
Re: what's your ball and chain think?
well my hubby is not into autos, but he don't really say anything about what i spend on my rides, cause i have always made my own money and i spend it too :)
the way i feel about his hunting and fishing is, i would rather see him buy something for hunting or fishing than alot of other things going on, out in this world today. imo ladies look at it this way, he is aleast home,in the grarge and not out somewhere getting in trouble. keep on truckin :) |
Re: what's your ball and chain think?
SWB85, sounds like the wifes has the same opinion. She does not understand why I spent 2 grand on rebuilding the 350 in my 76, when I purchased the truck for 500. She wants it to look pretty and still wants to use the old parts to do so. I told her in order to make it look pretty I have a purchase order from Summit for 2 grand. She blew a gasket!
Andrist1, My wife did the same thing at the Portland Swap meet. I am lucky she stopped to drop me at the front gate. It was like she could not get to the malls fast enough. |
Re: what's your ball and chain think?
My wife is great. I don't spend a whole lot on car parts and modifications, because personally, I don't think they are worth the money in the long run. Stuff I've recently bought includes a mig welder, car lift and a survivor 1969 Z/28. **cough, cough**. The mig was $300, and the exhaust I was going to have to replace on her car was $280. The mig fixed the exhaust. The car lift was just real nice of her to let me get, and when I brought up the Camaro, her only question was "will it go up in value, and is a good investment?" She's one in a million.....

Re: what's your ball and chain think?
The fiance knows how much I love my truck. She doesnt say anything about what I spend MY money on. She actually loves riding in my clean 70:)
|
Re: what's your ball and chain think?
My wife is great about the trucks. Wouldn't trade her for anything. Of course I play the same game she does......ie, when she shows up with a new dress that she's stashed in the closet for two weeks it's the old "Oh, I've had this a while.." So when she comes out to the shop and sees a new part on the bench......."Aw girl, don't you remember when I told you about that? It's been here weeks"
Truthfully, she's great about my parts hoarding as long as it doesn't enterfere with the household budget. |
Re: what's your ball and chain think?
Glad to hear I'm not alone:lol:
I've got the kicker right here guys/gals: I have a 500+hp LS1 camaro, 100rwhp sportbike and 450+hp truck (when the 383 is done) and the wife would "rather me stay away" from the drag strip because it's stupid to go that fast.:dohh: Never mind the fact that she'll drive 65mph worry-free on a 2 lane highway with cars passing each other mere feet apart while talking on a cell phone.....taking the toys to the drag strip with helmets/safety gear/emergency crews is too big of a risk to take. |
Re: what's your ball and chain think?
I have a great wife also. She understands the money i spend on the truck and my video games. Keeps me at home! Wouldn't trade her for the world!

Re: what's your ball and chain think?
I told my wife that the tax return was mine this year. She gave me the "Oh, really?" look and I reminded her that for the past 13 years she's claimed it for herself.
She asked me what I was going to spend it on. I pointed to the Silverado. She rolled her eyes at me and went back to playing on pogo. I then reminded her that the last $2000 spent on cars has been on her Neon. She gave me a sheepish grin and said, "Good point. Ok, no arguments here." Besides, she has to ride around with me in whatever I'm driving. In her most loving way of putting things, she said, "Hey, that means I won't have to ride in the rust bucket anymore then?" No, honey. You won't have to ride around anymore in the most reliable vehicle we've ever owned. |
Re: what's your ball and chain think?
Mine is ok with it since I supply the "toy funds" by working on other peoples rides. She does hate the lowered....which I love. I've had my Malibu nine years and the current Silverado almost a year....she's never rode in either. I married a car gal (17 years now) but motherhood changed her!

Re: what's your ball and chain think?
My wife is usually ok with some things. She knows if I want it, I am going to buy it, whether she approves or not.
Although, I don't buy the big things with out her $.02 And if she wants to buy something, I never say no. |

Re: what's your ball and chain think?
I'm one of the lucky ones I guess,,,, found a good wife the first try!
as others have said as long as I make sure the bills and kids are taken care of she doesn't say a word about what I spend on projects. her dad has raced since before she was born.(everything from circle track, drag and now the pikes peak hillclimb and local smaller hill climbs) she pretty much grew up in the garage with him. she doesn't even get mad when I bring the boys back in the house covered in grease and dirt after working on a project!:metal: |

She's actually into this stuff more than I am.
Her job even involves automobiles. When she comes home from work we talk about the cool stuff she did that day. Customs, street rods and exotics are her specialty. And right now she has the best truck in the family. Yes this truck is hers. I get to drive it sometimes! |

I thought you Texans didn't get snow..... |
Re: what's your ball and chain think?
I don't have a wife/girlfriend, but a gentleman's wife is currently keeping him from buying the red truck and all my parts :banghead: Hopefully he can sweettalk her :)
I know the family wasn't too thrilled when I drug the brown truck home, though. :metal: |
Re: what's your ball and chain think?
Mine says buy me a new car every two years and I won’t give you too much crap about your old money pits. She has gone through…..02’ VW Turbo Beatle, ’02 Hoe Z71 , ‘04 Hoe Z71 (my new daily driver), ‘06 Poncho G6 GTP, and most likely a ‘08 Poncho G8 next.
She works hard too and we have no kids so what the heck…….. |
Re: what's your ball and chain think?
Mine doesn't care. There was a time when she enjoyed hotrods as much as me. Now she has other priorities, but doesnt care what I do with my time. She has been dealing with my obsession for almost 30 years now. I guess she has grown used to it.
She did tell me I had to sell something before I bought another one...;) |

Re: what's your ball and chain think?
Clifsta i see you got your new "ride" Hope it gives you a long hassel free years of servace.
I am kinda in the same setup as Clifsta. I am going to school and still live at home when not there. I used to get alot of flack for her not having a spot for her to park her car in the garAge. BUT EVERY TIME I CLEANED UP HER SPOT SHE WOULD NOT USE IT!! SO I GAVE UP CLEANING IT Now my dad bought a convertible so her car really has no spot inside. The thing i get hasseled about is buying "projects" she really does not want me to have more then one automobile at a time. so for a while i had my 84 and that was it then i got more into tractors and bought the Wheel Horse to go along with the old CASE. That worked for a while but now I want somthing to mess around with. So my dad and i have been on the hunt. Enter the 41 plymouth truck. Now we really have not talked to her about it yet but i know what she will say "sell the black one first" But my dad knows now that i will never sell it unless someone got sick and we needed money or somthing. So it is gonna take a lot of work for my dad and i to get her to give us the permission to buy the plymouth. Will see how that goes................ |
Re: what's your ball and chain think?

Re: what's your ball and chain think?
Well I'm going on ten years married. My ole lady doesn't say anything at all about any of my spending habits. She does wonder why I haven't finished my engine swap yet on my 84 GMC, but yet I've bought the 85 lwb. I'm sinking money into it as I type, well both actually. She does come outside and check on me while I work on my trucks. She actually did some spotter work while I was under the lwb installing the headers. Afterwards she said she'd actually help if she knew what she was doing. Half the time I don't know what I'm doing, but I'm still doing it.

Re: what's your ball and chain think?
My ex used to love it. She helped me with my old bagged truck, she helped me rebuilt the top end in my 80 C10, she helped me rebuild my carb when that started leaking... she loved it and wanted an old C10 like mine.
Why I let that one get away I'll never know... |
Re: what's your ball and chain think?
my wiff hates the time and $$$ i spend on my $ pit. she hates it sittin in the yard and wants it done or gone. i love her but i love my truck too. i wish i was as lucky as some of you other guys

Re: what's your ball and chain think?
My wife tolerates my hobby. Although my truck is more for utilitarian purposes than for showing off I have my hobbies in other types of cars. The truck will get redone but not like some of you guys.
She does have her limits though. I collect old Thunderbirds and she drew the line at a 63 Convertible I almost bought this week. She actually gave me permission but it was one of those permissions where I knew that if I really bought the thing there would be some extended hell to pay. It wasn't worth the hassle. |
Re: what's your ball and chain think?
In my region there are about 10 car enthusiasts out of 10000 people. Majority of them are tuning- freaks. So I am happy to have a wife who thinks that a man needs a thing of his own and wife, too. She has always backed me up, even if my own fate has dropped during tough projects. In addition I am willing to walk behind her shopping now and then. My trucks usually are driveable in summertime, so she can ride them, too. If I would sell my american truck, she would be the first to surf the net after a new project for me.

Re: what's your ball and chain think?
Well, lets say the wife dose not know what I put into $$$$ the play toys. She thinks I make allot less then I do. I have put that money at a different Bank for years. So she know nothing about what I spend on toys. I just tell her honey they needed money bad and I got it cheep.
Maybe one day that will change!! |
Re: what's your ball and chain think?
As long as the mortgage is paid and the CAR PAYMENT on her car (the only car payment we have) is made, she don't care :D
85's in the shop right now getting a dual plane intake installed (so the little bitty Edelbrock 750 doesn't get so bent out of shape) and a 3.73 posi installed, hello $1400 bill for repairs/parts. Can't wait for warmer weather so I don't need choke so bad, the Holley and single plane will go back on and LOOK OUT! |
