Project... Tinker !!!

Well guys, as some of you know this used to be my dads truck, but recently I acquired it as of some trading around :D

Just a recap from the old thread

(I just knew I had before pics, but I was wrong :()
Put a 4-barrel intake on er
I bead-blasted & powder-coated the intake & air filter cover, then put on some different valve covers :metal:

Now that its mine, it time for a lil more engine upgrades !!!!

I will be pulling the cam, intake & exhaust from Sinister (engine needs to be rebuilt) And I have some old headers laying around & I'll be using

Currently Im trying to figure out what heads Ima run, but we shall know soon !!!

Also Ima be swapping the trans & clutch out to a known good trans & a good clutch

Some pics

Thanks
It was just a nasty pitted chrome air cleaner before, but it turned out nice with the satin black powder coat :chevy:

Re: Project... Tinker !!!

Well a simple project just doesnt exist does it
All I wanted was to put on some dang headers !!!

But after fighting with it ALL day I finally got some on
The first pair didnt fit, so I had to rob Sinister of its headers
And in the end I got em on...

I had to fix the header flanges as I drug them off in Houston

Bummer for you

We even have a 68 stepper & we had another 67, but we sold it to HotRod80

Re: Project... Tinker !!!

Well I didnt get the trans swapped yet

I just have to work on my engine, its screaming "Give me a big cam !!!"

So I decided to run the 305 heads & mod them to run on pump gas (its a secret), it shouldnt change my compression ration much so I should be good

Also gonna put the cam out of Sinister in it & for those of you who heard Sinister, will know how radical it sounded in a engine that is 67ci bigger !!! :metal:

Re: Project... Tinker !!!

Thanks for the compliments on the heads, I worked my butt off on those suckers

Now I just gotta figure out what cam to run... Im just baffled as to why my cam ground away like that

berencam 05-06-2008 04:03 PM

Re: Project... Tinker !!!

When you installed that cam the first time, did you idle the engine on the firs startup or did you keep it abouve 1200 rpm for 30 minutes? If you dont keep it above 1200 you will round the lobes off.

Spray-Bomb 05-06-2008 04:23 PM

Re: Project... Tinker !!!

I dont know, my brother built the engine

I know he's about as picky as me & I dont think that would be what caused it, but I wasnt there so IDK

The thing that gets me is, he had it in one other engine when it was new & he said it sounded the same & he was trying to figure out why because its only supposed to be a 268H cam, so Im pretty sure he looked it over before he put it in my engine

Besides, its not all the lobes, just 2 of them are real bad & 2 more are getting bad, the rest of them look fine :|

berencam 05-06-2008 04:26 PM

Re: Project... Tinker !!!

Btw i have a spare 350 cam with the lifters you can have if you want it, there hardly any wear on it.

Re: Project... Tinker !!!

I have a thought on your cam . If your brother didn't keep track of where the lifters came from as in order . If you mix em up after you remove em this will also cause them to eat themselves . Just a thought . Bob

What's the groove leading out of the combustion chamber for?

i assume to lower the compression a little, but ive never seen that before?

67_C-30 05-07-2008 05:35 AM

Re: Project... Tinker !!!

Yeah, do tell on the slot.
I don't understand the thinking because any sharp edges in the combustion chamber or quench area causes detonation. Those are #624 76cc smog heads, so lowering the compression shouldn't be the issue either?

lukecp 05-07-2008 05:45 AM

Re: Project... Tinker !!!

I was also wondering on the slots. I had a pair of those 624 heads on my truck with whopping 1.72/1.50 valves...it actually ran OK but when I put a pair of closed-chamber 2.02 heads on it it gave it a LOT more power. I don't think I'd run a pair on a 283 though because it would have really low compression.

Spray-Bomb 05-07-2008 07:22 AM

Re: Project... Tinker !!!

The heads were 58cc combustion chamber & they have 184 intake / 150 exhaust valves

After the mods I did to them they are now 60cc which is what the heads on my 283 were & they had 172 intake / 150 exhaust

What I did was, curve the casting so that it wasnt sharp ( as one of yall said, sharp edges make hot spots) it also makes less turbulence for the flame travel
The groove also aids in flame travel & I rounded it too, so its not a hot spot either

From what I have read, by doing the mods I did it should help me be able to run more compression on 87 octane crap gas

BurnoutNova 05-07-2008 07:36 AM

Re: Project... Tinker !!!

those sure dont look like 58cc combustion chambers, there way to big

Not when you CC them

Re: Project... Tinker !!!

It could be a few things...
The cam wasn't broken in properly (lubed & ran)
The valves weren't adjusted properly (to tight)
or you got a bad cam, it could be a cheap cam too.

do you have to take into account the thickness of the head gasket and the valve reliefs on the pistons?

they look like big open chambers, but im probly just not looking at them right?

what is the casting number?

IDK what he did, but if I had to guess he just lubed & ran it, but again IDK

The cam was a Comp Cams 268H

Your right, it's hard to tell! The only sure thing is your getting a new one, with the head work you can put a nice thumper in it.
That truck is badass, if you ever want to sell it, let me know!!

The head number is 14014416

Re: Project... Tinker !!!

I have a comp cam that came out of wild mouse that has way more round lobes than yours !! I called them and they told me I must have installed wrong or improper break in !! Bulls@#t I will not use a comp cam again . Have too many friends that have had trouble with them getting flat lobes on em . I am sure someone will chime in and tell me they think they are great and it was my fault . I've been building motors for 20 yrs this was my first and last comp cam!!!! My 2 cents ! I think the cam you told me about will be great in your motor !! Later, Bob
