How much you got in that thing?
Old rusty c-10 asked me how much time and money I had in my truck, and it got me thinking...I'm sure everyone on here has got some pretty wild numbers and I for one would like to hear them!
Post a before and after pic and drop some number if you would! |

So I'm estimating about $2000 to $2500 (including truck), maybe a little more. I have had the truck since Feb 08, so I'm coming up on 5-6 months, I bet I have well over 100 hours in so far. I think one of the reasons my number is low(?) is that I have barely touched the engine, but with it looking so good I'm adding more and more engine mods to my wish list.

I bought it for $1700 8 months ago and have put about $2000 into it including the lowering, wheels/tires, CD player, new bumper/roll pan, tilt column, dual exhaust and freshened up 350 that is about to be installed...and there is no end in sight.:chevy: I still want some bucket seats, new trans, body work and paint, rear end, and eventually some TT2s.

Re: How much you got in that thing?
I bought my truck 2 1/2 years ago for a grand, so fare I but 8,000 in mine still not any where done, the paint, primer, and clear costed over a 1,000 dollars, I lost count of hours working on the truck probaly close to 500, a rebuild mild 350 that had less than a 100 miles on it for $200 which I really saved there with 6,000 miles on it so fare no problems yet , th350 with about 1500 miles on it, suspension has new bushings, djm 2inch drop coils, 3inch spindles replaced a couple of months ago with a flip kit and drop shocks, replaced the front brakes acouple months ago, new interior, new wheels and tires, new front bumper

Re: How much you got in that thing?
Still not done, need some box sides, doors, cab corners, and rocker panels to finish the body. Then I can paint it again. I want to replace the springs, get drop spindles and a flip kit to lower it right. Also swap the cam and intake for one that makes more torque so it is easier on gas. As it is, its a dependable parts chaser.
Best guess is $1500, its nice having stuff laying around, like windshields, transmissions, engines, and most of an interior. If you make money off the other parts you sell from the donor, the parts you keep are free! Well pretty much. Another $2000 and it should be done and pulling the other toys around. Sad but true
A lot more than I could get for it. Mark |
Re: How much you got in that thing?
Don't ask. ;)
Its not how you count, its how you measure. Does rent count? No. Its all in our minds... |
Re: How much you got in that thing?
I am thinking abouit 14k or 15k over 10 years of ownership, that includes rebuilt motor, trans, brakes, paint, interior(that is not installed yet).
This is what it looked like a couple months after I bought, the bed was so rusted I replaced shortly after I got it. http://chevytruckworld.tenmagazines....eff/130163.jpg This is what it look like today, have all of the interior bought, just need to find time to install it. http://chevytruckworld.tenmagazines....eff/285975.jpg |
Re: How much you got in that thing?
If I put down how much I had in the blazer my wife will find out some how and she would kill me. Plus I do not want to know, I would kill my self if I add up everything.. Some things are just good to keep to your self.;)

I’m at $4103.22; I’m keeping a running tally. That’s just steering, tires and wheels, brakes, suspension, and some of the interior. I still have the engine, trany, interior, and paint to go. I don’t look at it as how much I’ve spent but how much I’ve saved, Have you looked at the price of new trucks lately?
Here's my before and now but there's not much changed. It's been on jackstands for two months now. |
Re: How much you got in that thing?
The house has looked like that even longer, my neighbors LOVE me.
|
Re: How much you got in that thing?
I figured it up at just over $93.00 including the cost of the truck.. most of that in cleaners and spray paint..
|
Re: How much you got in that thing?
My neighbors adore me. I am the only mechanic for 20 miles!
|
Re: How much you got in that thing?
about 9000 motor, wheels, sound system, 91 front end .........still need paint, tires, odds and ends
|
Re: How much you got in that thing?
lol, ~$8k in the motor/trans/rear......and it still looks like a stock 23yr old rust bucket with the hood closed.

Re: How much you got in that thing?
I have got $50.00 in mine and another 50 and another 50 and another 50 and another 50---get the picture? It is not the cost but what you want that is important.
My paint and body work was a good investment, so was the dollars spent on each and every engine that I put in the truck. I quit counting at the point that I doubled my investment on the original truck purchase price. |

Some of my neighbors HATE me...I live in an apartment complex and i used to pull my truck up right in front of my garage...then people started whining about me blocking the drive (BS! my buddies dully could get past with no problems!) and i got a nasty gram from the front office. Now i have to park next to them and run two extension cords to get power when i need it. One good thing came of it, where i work now is under a big ass shade tree, so i no longer have a red neck. (or maybe i still do?) |

Re: How much you got in that thing?
$5K in the 87, about $3K in the 79, and about $1200 in the 72 project. Most of the 87 was the purchase price, it came with a BOSS V-plow, then I sunk 1500 into interior replacement, floor pans, etc. It still has hardly any reverse, a leaking intake gasket (coolant), and the body looks like hell. The 79 still needs a rear bumper, paint, and something other than the Street Avenger carb (on it) I can't get adjusted right. The 72, well, that's all on hold right now.

Re: How much you got in that thing?
I have 4 old trucks right now . I paid good money for at least two of them and the other two still were not cheap . I have way too much invested . On the other hand , I could sell all four of mine and might possibly be able to buy a truck that is built to the level of quality of Ken's Black 77 .

Re: How much you got in that thing?
I don't think you can buy a truck of that level. You have to build a truck of that level.
|
Re: How much you got in that thing?
i don't want to even think about it, and its still not running.
|
Re: How much you got in that thing?
I do not this this question should be asked nor answered.
However, you must put it into perspective. The entertainment and fun working and or driving them are well worth it. |

Re: How much you got in that thing?
What an inspirational thread!
I'm fired up... I wanna go buy something for the lowrider! One day recently, I asked my wife of 25 years to take care of paying the bills. OOPs! - she saw all the receipts! She's a good sport though. The only thing she said was, "You could be doing worse things with the money"! Time for some more over-time. Kenny |

Re: How much you got in that thing?
I have spent probably double or triple what it is worth, and it still looks like just another old pickup...

Re: How much you got in that thing?
I paid 3495 for the truck with a blown head gasget, but the rest of the truck was a cream puff, quite rare for a rust belt truck. I have $5000 in the engine replacement and a bit in the extras I added. Mike
