It's been a while since my last update. After spending a few Fridays at the shop prepping the engine and tranny, we finally got to put some of the truck together:metal:. This past weekend I finally went for the rolling chassis and brought to the shop. Got the engine and tranny in and started on the exhaust. I thought I had a driveline ready for it, but it ended up being about 2" too long. My bro-in-law had one the right length, but we're waiting on new u-joints... Here's some pics... This was Saturday..:chevy:

In the evening on Saturday, with the rolling chassis back on the trailer, we packed an overnight bag and went to my brother-in-law's (Fred) house up in Rowe, about 35-40 miles NE of Santa Fe(where the rest of the truck is). We spent the night there to get an early start on Sunday morning...

Sunday was kind of a scary day... We started off by switching cabs on a '62 that Fred's putting together to sell. We used a cab moving device that he built. Scary, to say the least, but it works..We didn't win any safety awards, that's for sure, but we got the job done...:chevy:

Now back to Lisa's truck. Using the same cab moving device, we removed the cab from the '72 chassis it was sitting on back to the original, cleaned and painted chassis.

60-66's are the best!! We have just the '62 and this '65. My brother in law, Fred has quite a few on his property. He's building a '61 stepside and a '65 Suburban...along with a '67 Fleetside and a '71 Monte Carlo. Donor trucks are all over his property. My stepson's '63 project is also out there and my '73 Cheyenne Super. We're just a bunch of junk collectors!:lol: God willing, we'll get all those projects done one day...

Hey Jon,

We scored those wheels here on the board from a fellow member. Killer deal. As far as specs, I'm not sure exactly. The fronts are 15x7's and the rears are 15x8's. I don't know the offsets though.:chevy:

Did a little more work to the '65 this weekend. I did a little trade and go a factory automatic steering column. My lady cleaned it and sanded it and polished all the chrome pieces. I painted it on Saturday and we installed it on Sunday. Lisa cleaned all the linkage parts, I painted and installed those. The shifter works great! I also sanded and painted an original 'deluxe' steering wheel that we picked up from Tony (LILRED66). We didn't have a steering wheel puller so we didn't get to bolt that on, but it looks awesome..Here are some pics...jc:ito::chevy:

Re: Progress on my woman's '65 Short/Fleet.

Well, it's been awhile since we did some work to Lisa's '65.

An update: The 283 which looks so beautiful in place on the chassis is now out on the ground. We had some issues with the flywheel. The starter was binding with a 168 tooth plate. I was going to pull it to try a 153 tooth plate and another starter. Meanwhile, my brother in law came to me with a deal on a fresh 350 that I couldn't refuse. So I'm going back in with that. Tomorrow I'm going to the shop to install gaskets, v/c's, manifolds, fuel pump, water pump, etc. on the new motor. Hopefully, by the end of the weekend, I can stab the engine in the truck. I decided to go with the 350 because;

1: it was a good deal, and

2: It's freshly rebuilt with zero miles and

3: the 283 was a running motor that I just cleaned, painted and resealed, not a fresh motor.

Anyhow, I'll post pics of the weekend's progress on Monday.

TimE 03-12-2009 09:39 AM

Re: Progress on my woman's '65 Short/Fleet.

Nothing like a good deal from a relative. Sounds like the 350 is a better choice versus a "rattlecan rebuild"(although that 283 looked good!).
