not only are the old trucks cool but so are the old drag cars as well. If you are in the midwest, the first weekend of oct. there are nosalgic drag in kansas city(kcir). have been there before and there are some old push trucks there. Planning on going again this year as well. Gary

You can of course spot a few more in the pics here and there, (misc, body panels), but that's the real shots. Couldn't believe how many were in there after I saw these pics taken by someone else from years ago before our trucks were classics! DLB |

Re: Vintage push trucks
c10addict, I like the way you're thinking. I can get more into the push truck theme than some of the other stuff people are doing.

But met Don Gartlis.... was there when he "fired up" the Swamp Rat and talked to many of the guys I used to know from the "Pittsburgh International Dragway" days.... So you're gonna keep doing the "push truck" theme going with "Billy's ex" .... Hopefully one day we can use it to "put on a show" at one of the "nostaglia drags" with my "C10 altered/gasser.... how about the PID reunion ...2010??? If it doesn't rain again!!!! BTW... plus.... ya missed Gina's chilli ....yummmmmmy as usual!!!! Give ya a "raincheck"!!! HA!!! |

I like this thread..... makes me happy to say I "CAN REMEMBER S**T" ...... HA!!!
Ahhhh "those were the days"..... that is why I am SO into the current wave of popularity for "nostaglia" drag racing.... here's a few more pics to add to this thread.... behind many of the drag cars of the past were push/tow/haul trucks..... |

gain we think so much alike. I orginally planned to take the door for the glove compartment but then changed my mind bing I MIGHT yank out the stock dash and replave it with a "lightweight" dash panel.... Still kicking the idea around....if I do the "engine setback" I'll DO it. Even with the rain it was still a GOOD time... especially when Big Daddy fired up the Swamp Rat.... love the smell of "nitro". With "ALL" the PID & Heidelburg race track graphics (show everyone some close-up pics) your truck would have BEEN a BIG hit with everyone who showed for the PID reunion .... 2nd only to "Big Daddy" and possibly this "bad a**" '55 Chevy Gasser..... which ran "on the national record" on the FINAL day PID was open. FYI...after that run the car was put into storage where it has been for 32 years.... until it was brought to the PID reunion last Saturday. Sooooo cool!!!! |

My truck was a push truck before I owned it. When I bought the truck, the PO gave me the original bumper with the plate on it.

Re: Vintage push trucks
This thread was worth reviving (& sorta hijacking):hm:
I'm trying to find info on making a vintage drag push bar. Some of 'em look like they're just boards bolted to the bumper, but some of the nicer looking ones look like they're mounted to the frame & have some cushioning. I'm looking to build the latter. Anyone have some up-close photos or decriptions of how the nicer ones are built? |
Re: Vintage push trucks
Too funny!, I am working on doing this to the Longhorn! ( Only so much you can do to make a 3/4 ton "cool") I was trying to decide if I should go w/ the "Midwest Drag Race" look - found some cool drag strip decals from Nebraska, Kansas etc or go w the Salt flats look. Decided to go Vintage Salt/SoCal look and bring it to Goodguys Des Moines next year. Hope to find either some 8 lug aluminum slots or wide steelies and fab a pushbar for the front.

Any idea on how your going to do the push bar? I'm thinking about a front mounted Reese hitch. Can then fab a plate with wood to slide in the reciever. Also use it for a winch mount if ya want. |
