Building the damn yankee

****UPDATE****THE DAMN YANKEE IS NOW 12/28/2008 UNDER CONSTRUCTION!!!! BEEN WORKIN HARD ON THE CAB AND IT'S COMMING TOGETHER. LOTS OF PICTURES. CHECK IT OUT.
So far I've been building sub assemblies and gathering fenders ,doors ,rollpans ,taligate ,headboard, engine, and driveline parts. The Damn Yankee has 1 more dump run left. as of 1 jan 09 my newly aquired 89 swb 1500 will be 20 yrs old and i'll reg her as historic and she'll take over the chores ie dump runs pulling the boat, parts runner etc etc.i'm excited as a two peckerd pup! i've had many classic trucks , cars, hotrods, harleys and assorted toys but, the DAMN YANKEE keeps ne awake at night. why?? no idea but i got that itch i gotta scratch! This build may not be Barrett Jackson worthy but, i'll give it my absolute best shot!! There have been a few parts i've bought off members of this site also. i've never a bad experence either. thanks to all you guys for the good deals and honest buisness practices. As for advice theres some very smart talented people on this forum thanks to all. i'll be glad to pay it forward. thanks for looking, posting, questions, &comments.

Respectfully Mark Phippen

Then once you have uploaded them, you click the IMG code & it automatically copys it, then you go to your post & paste it

http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/oo84/phipp13/523.jpg here is the rear end i'm using a ford 9 inch posi out of a 69 mustang. it's 5" narrower than the stock 12 bolt in the truck now therefore i should be able to use a standard backspaced 12 to 14 inch wide rim. i backbraced it with .125 2"x3" box tubing.

Here are the rear end brackets i made fwd and aft ladderbar brackets and lower adjustable coilover shock brackets. all brackets were made oit if 4130 chrome moly steel .190 on the shock brackets and .125 on the front and rear ladderbar brackets. the ladderbar brackets will have a strap welded to the backs after final installation. making them pairs. this will add latteral strength to keep the thin .125. from flexing side to side.

this gonna be a rock crawler or a muddin truck???

phipp13 12-14-2008 08:28 PM

Re: Building the damn yankee

it's gonna be a prostreet. got a 383 stroker w/eagle arp balanced bottom Dart iron eagle heads,B&M 144 blower, turbo 400,and a 9 inch rear. ladderbar and coilover shocks. fuel cell in rear of the bed as well as battery, roll pans on front and rear plus tons of other stuff
the puke blue motor will be re painted and i got all the parts to pretty her up rebuild the blower and she'll be good to go. i bought that motor for 950.00 from a member 70GMCer with 200 miles on it. he had a couple grand in it and couldnt keep it from running rich.IMHO it was over carbed and under cammed. he gave me 1 hell of a deal recipts n all. the blower aws a seperate deal.

Re: Building the damn yankee

ahhh, the reason i asked is cause how you did your rear end.....ive seen lots of crawlers brace it like that, but not too many other 'steet' applications.

phipp13 12-14-2008 09:20 PM

Re: Building the damn yankee

the backbrace on the rear is because when you run the fat tires and if it hooksup it'll want to bend the tubes fwd. the reason for the long ladderbars is that the trailing arm trucks 60ft like a bat outta hell and i did'nt want to change/shorten the lenghth of the front mount. i took a swag (scientific wild ass guess) why the arms were so long. i believe it's that way because any weight aft of the front pivot point is weight on the rear wheels. being shorter will be less weight and these pickups need all the rear weight they can get to hookup. anyone with more knowledge on this subject PLEASE pass it on as i need all the help i can get v/r Phipp

Re: Building the damn yankee

What or how are you going to adjust pinion angle with that ladder bar set up? Can't tell if the rod ends are screw in or not.

phipp13 12-16-2008 08:54 PM

Re: Building the damn yankee

the rod ends in the pic are NOT the ones i'm using, they're for mockup only. i have 3/4" chromemoly screw in rod ends. the Ladderbars are single adjustable though. As far as my front brackets i have 5 hole adjustment and i'll locate it in the center hole. i'll loose the stock cross brace/mount for a 2x3x.125 drop cross member with a driveshaft loop when it gets installed hopfully fwd of the stock trailimg arm pivot location . Saturday is the final DUMP RUN!!!!! for the DAMN YANKEE.

Looks good are you keeping the hood

phipp13 12-18-2008 10:16 PM

Re: Building the damn yankee

as for the hood the jury is out. i hav;nt decided wether i like the hood or not. i might poll public opinion. i know one thing for sure it sucks when it rains. the airgap intake looks like a swimming pool :( i guess it would be bettersuited for az weather. i'll let you know if i ditch the hood. thanks for stopping by

thanks shortstep i'm gonna poll this as i'm on the fence about this hood!

Re: Building the damn yankee

OK OK, since you do not want the hood, just send it my way, i am sure i could use it on one of my projects, just trying to be a nice guy and hide all the ugly stuff from everyone else, but really i did the hood, i would keep it.

sweet burnout pics!!! love it. I also love the louvers. Cowl induction doesn't look right on these trucks... looks goofy and out of place. The louvers are cool and ol skool and different. I day keep the louvered hood.

Re: Building the damn yankee

gettin down to serious bizzness. the more i opened it up the more rust i saw.i neglected to buy the front&rear doorjamb extensions but they're on their way as well as new cab mounts. thank god for my grinders and air chisel!!
http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/oo84/phipp13/007.jpg
this is the rough cut out still a little up the toeboard has to go to remove all the rust
http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...pp13/010-1.jpg
skin was removed with an air chisel applying upward force as not to distort the doubler
http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...pp13/011-1.jpg
prior to removal the cab north/south support was welded to bushing perch so the cab wouldnt shift when the floor was removed
http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...pp13/012-1.jpg
this bar was welded in to keep the door post from moving while removing the entire bottom of the pillar imho if you don't do this you're screwed when it comes to getting it to all line up again
http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/oo84/phipp13/013.jpg
more photos to come as i'm doing the floor/ lower cab in quadrants to prevent any movement while cut out and to ensure it will line up with the new replacement panels.
most people would look for a new cab before doing all this work. in the mid atlantic region the rust free cabs are 1 on totaly restored trucks or rare as hens teeth and cost a bundle. i should have all 4 quadrants done in about 4-6weeks and aprox 300.00 in new sheetmetal repair panels.

Re: Building the damn yankee

while waiting for my pillar extensions to arrive, i worked on my vent boxes, here are a few pics of the repairs i have made. i have more detailed pictures if anyone needs them pm me. v/r phipp13
might as well go all the way cut all the rust out.
http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o.../resto2001.jpg
pic of the flush repair i used a pneumatic step flange/hole punch tool . All the holes will be plug welded
http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o.../resto2002.jpg
http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o.../resto2004.jpg
hey look twins! except this ones worse the bottom is rotted out too. after i blast the cab i will POR15 these areas and paint them before welding them shut.

Just finished up this vent box on mine. I had to cutout the bottom of mine too. I don't think I'll have to cutout the bottom on the drivers side.

Very detailed build. Keep it up. I am doing some similar stuff and need all the help I can get :).

Re: Building the damn yankee

Today was a good day! the Damn Yankee took a whoppin from me YA! Some days everthing you touch turns to crap. well today was just the opposite. i got the whole left front fitted, clamped drilled, clecoed, and the floorpan partially spotwelded in. thats a monumental task considering how anal i am when it comes to metalwork. It's learned behavior being that i'm an aircraft sheetmetal mechanic/ aircraft welder. the Dates are wrong on my camera

http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...3/100_4569.jpg

pic showing the .032 gap created by cutoff grinder.i butt my pans and spot mig them in. the .032 gap is perfect to weld shut. there is room for shrinkage therefore it wont buckle when it's welded. patience is the key for doing a decent job.

Looks real good, I do it the same-1/32 gap to but weld. I wish I had that grinder instead of a pistol grip and/or die grinder with 3" wheel.
