My first '60-'63 and a 1/2 ton 4x4 GMC Suburban no less

Although I am a lover of 4-5-6 Chevy trucks, I have taken the plunge and snatched up a 1962 GMC 1/2 ton 4x4 Suburban. My brother did the due diligence with lots of photos and dealing with the seller and even had it towed to his place.

It appears to be a relatively unmolested survivor with the factory 305E V6/granny low 4-speed and factory running gear...no plaid valve covers though! In any case, it looks like a real solid rig.

Hopefully, this '62 GMC gets along with my 4-5-6 Chevy trucks.

haha... welcome to the dark side!
60-63 and gmc! you are way over the fence now!
I think the plaid valve covers were 63 only.
If you don't know about it, there is a ton of good gmc info over on

another cool thing : The "c" stands for the oakland ,ca plant, which might explain the lack of rust, and the 1201 shows it as the 200th produced in 1962(j)

I moved forward with it because my brother kept sending me all of these cool photos of it and the more I looked at it and for the money, it was hard to pass it up.

Here is my simple plan, that I use when I acquire a new rig:

1. Remove anything that is not attached.
2. Repair anything that is broken.
3. Replaced anything that is missing.
4. Swap anything that is not factory, to a certain extent.
5. Wash and vacuum the interior.
6. Wash the exterior and engine compartment.
7. Take a good tally of what I have and then determine what it is going to be.

Re: My first '60-'63 and a 1/2 ton 4x4 GMC Suburban no less

Just kidding...it is not for sale. This one will end up with a 4-5-6 Chevy Trucks logo on the doors.

Thanks for all the encouragement. My brother is transporting it from Medford, OR to Kansas City, KS for me in the next few months and making it part of his trip to see my father.

I can't wait to see it in person and get to work on it. I will keep you posted with lots of pictures.

That's an excellent score....very straight and looks to be relatively rust free. Does it currently run and drive?

I used to have a '63 Chevy 4x4 Suburban, 292, 4spd......man I wish I still had that one.

Tony Heres a link to google maps.

Driving directions to Medford, OR
371 mi – about 6 hours 13 mins
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&sour...84&ie=UTF8&z=6 and it should fill in the to and from automatically so you can see how far it is. ;)

Whatever color is left after I give her a good bath is the color she will be. I don't plan on doing any mods to it, just freshen it up and get it streetable.

Astoria is in the upper left hand corner of the state. Basically the opposite end of the state in relation to Medford.

Hey no problem. I'm pretty handy with PC's so it was nothing for me to click a few buttons. However when it comes to these trucks I'm about as useless as they come, but learing tons and tons every day. :metal:

Mucho Potential there Tony. :ito:

I would have snapped it up like you did if I had the room - just to have the project and the fun of doing it. Excellent score.
