Vintage License Plate - VOTE!!
I have been looking at registering a vintage plate for my 72 and wanted your opinion on a it.
In Oklahoma we can register a vintage tag (the kind that had the year stamped rather than the sticker) as our official vehicle plates. I currently have a 1972 Farm Truck tag and am thinking of using it since the PO (my dad) used it on the farm, but the non-farm truck tags from that era are green and white... the same color scheme as my truck. What are your thoughts? Please vote! PS: These photos aren't of my actual vintage tags... just a reference... http://www.pl8s.com/ps-photos-11/11352.jpg http://www.pl8s.com/ps-photos-11/11351.jpg |
Re: Vintage License Plate - VOTE!!
Pretty cool tags....are the yearly tag rates any cheaper if you go this route? When I lived in Alabama I bought an 'antique vehicle' tag so I wouldnt have to buy a tag every year, it was good forever with no renewal. Well, in Alabama, forever apparently means one year as they repealed that tag deal 1 year after I bought mine, so had to buy tags on my old truck again.
Anyway, if you can use those tags and get cheaper rates (or at least not have to pay more), go for it :) |

Re: Vintage License Plate - VOTE!!
What kind of truck is it? Street rod? stock? 4x4? I think it's more a question of what do YOU want. I think the green/white will look better, but the farm tags mean something to you personally, so that leads to the question of how much do they mean to you?

I think it would look good with a custom frame like this

Re: Vintage License Plate - VOTE!!
unless the goal is to look like a farm truck, I'd go with the 'street' plate.

Re: Vintage License Plate - VOTE!!
I vote for the farm truck License plate ,,because If you are as proud of your dad as i am of mine I'd do it for him ,,,,and when some one asks you about it ,,you can proudly say it was my dads .. Pretty easy answer for me and hope is for you also .. If it's the color ,,then do as the other poster suggested and surround it with something that will seperate the two different shades of green ,,if that is a problem for you ..

You outlined my struggle perfectly. The green and white will look better, but the farm tag means something. Which means more? That's a tough one, but I lean to Farm Tag. It is also nice considering I already have the farm plate I guess... |

I would go with the farm plate because of your dad....

Re: Vintage License Plate - VOTE!!
This is a hard decision. My '67 stepper lived it's life in Oregon as a very well used farm truck. I think it would be cool to remember it's "roots" so to speak. I have vintage plates on mine, but AZ does not have farm tags.
I voted non-farm, but shoot, I think I agree with the masses, go for the farm tag out of respect for your pop. :) D |
Re: Vintage License Plate - VOTE!!
Just make sure if you do use the farm tag that there are no mileage limitations that you have. IIRC in Missouri we used to have them however I could not find the statute.

Re: Vintage License Plate - VOTE!!
When I lived in Georgia you could get an antique tag for an older vehicle . In SC it's a hobby tag and not for everday use . At least that's what I was told . Any of y'all know?

Re: Vintage License Plate - VOTE!!
I like the farm truck tag better.
"Oklahoma is OK" is kinda cheesy, JMHO :D |

If you are able to run it as a "cool old and original to the truck plate" without restrictions go for it but make sure that there are no restrictions related to it except the normal "licensed as a vintage vehicle" restrictions. That usually means no hauling or work related towing. I'm still up in the air on vintage and collector plates but will probably run the 48 with a Washington Collector plate as it is rear plate only and the truck won't be a daily driver when it is done although it may be driven often. |

Re: Vintage License Plate - VOTE!!
go with the farm truck plate. i have one on mine just for the fact that it is complete opposite of a farm truck. i thought it was funny until the other day when i saw an 09 caddy escalade with oem 22" wheels and some snotty woman driving it that had farm truck tags on it. i guess dps doesnt really follow up with that kind of deal anymore

I agree with sjarrett71 and mr48chev... make sure there isn't any restrictions with the farms plates and run them. I prefer the color combo of the farm plate vs. the regular plate, but you'll probably want to drive a little farther than 25mi. :D

Re: Vintage License Plate - VOTE!!
Another one for the Farm Tag. I think it just ties in well for the trucks history, and who cares about the plate color.
Oh yeah, I too think the Oklahoma is OK.....bit hokey. |

Re: Vintage License Plate - VOTE!!
Oklahoma's Vintage Tag law allows any vehicle over 21 years to use any tag over 21 years... so if I wanted to I could put a 1935 plate on my 72.
Also, there is no restriction for towing, work, or mileage. It doesn't matter what you use the truck for... and the "Farm Truck" stamp doesn't matter either. Here is a link to the info: http://www.tax.ok.gov/sp1.html |
Re: Vintage License Plate - VOTE!!
The farm tag is B.A., All jayhawk liscense plate surrounds should be ground up to make septic tanks with! LOL,
|
Re: Vintage License Plate - VOTE!!
I voted Farm plates as that is our trucks heritage. A heritage that has become an ICON among trucks. But as has been said...it's your call.

It's the "best" one I could find on fleabay after looking on and off for months. I still need to go to Napa or somewhere and get the paint matched so I can repaint it, it has some rust I'm not diggin' and looks a lot better in the pic than it is. |

I voted Farm. Sounds like you have some sentimental stuff goin on there.
Either is cool however. |
Re: Vintage License Plate - VOTE!!
I voted Farm Truck. Just because its probably a more rare tag. I have an old Ambulance tag, now all I need is an old ambulance.
|
Re: Vintage License Plate - VOTE!!
I voted Farm Truck. Has character... If it is significantly customized or slammed, I'd probably go with the street tag.
