PROJECT "FLIP THAT TRUCK OR ELSE" aka polished turd
OK, so the wife didn't really use those terms when i told her that I was picking up another truck, but she might as well have... 60 days is the plan... Purchased the truck on 4 Mar and plan to sell no later than cinco de mayo. Noticed a local Craigslist ad for a 68 C-10 for $1,000... Sounds good right? Then I get pics in the email and it's a 69... Lay talked of issues with husband, truck stuck in third gear, has four kids now and can't drive it, needs the money kinda story. So after a few emails and phone calls she has some potential buyers and they all fall through. I make her an offer and she says "come get it". Ok now is the time that I better mention this plan to the wife:sumo::sumo::sumo: So I pick up the truck, rented a trailer and got it home. Still in third, husband converted the column shift to the floor and now it has issues. After getting it home I played with the shifter a little an voila!!! It's shifting fine... cool, test drive time! I think it's a 307 but I need to run the numbers. Pros: New carb New coil New wires New MSD box (why??) New water pump New alternator New valve covers Clean aftermarket tailgate New cab mounts and clean supports Newer tires Clean title all original except rear rollpan and white paint. New rear slider Nice seat new high flow fuel pump (why?) PA inspected in Jan:metal: Cons: rust above the windshield was stuck in third backfires through carb under acceleration rims a little rusty Cut dash drive door shot missing driver side trim overspray on fenders from PO's engine bay paint job no power steering or brakes 4 wheel drums Plans are to polish the turd, get it running nice and resell... maybe see $700+ profit with little time or money investment... |
Re: Project "flip that truck or else!"
Cleaned the overpsray off today with a sanding sponge... pics tomorrow!
Title, tax and registration - $125!!! Insured for about $20/month Also picked up some slotted mags to replace the rusty chrome rims... |
Re: Project "flip that truck or else!"
You drove home in third?
Hella good torque from these old trucks. But how did the PO not think to mask the engine bay off? |
Re: Project "flip that truck or else!"

I winched it onto the trailer and drove it off the trailer in third... still smoked the clutch a little...oops. the engine bay?? who knows what goes through people's mind. |
Re: Project "flip that truck or else!"
Nice find
|
Re: Project "flip that truck or else!"
thanks... it's one of those trucks that you could beat around in for another decade but you better not tear into her cause she won't go back together... rust in all the normal areas, rad support, inner fenders, trailing arms...
|
Re: Project "flip that truck or else!"
I saw that one and considered doing the same but I've got two already ;) ....glad someone here picked it up...hope you make some good coin to use on your other project.
|
Re: Project "flip that truck or else!"
we'll see... I think I need to adjust the timing due to the small backfiring in the carb. I might also pull all the unnecessary MSD items off and put a cheap HEI on it.

Re: Project "flip that truck or else!"
worked on the turd again today. found that most of the oil pan bolts were finger tight at best, hence the oil spill under the truck!
Little elbow grease and the rims were looking better, atleast the pass side is... I still need to get some driver side trim and polish the rims on that side too... Driver door is shot for sure, it's going on craigslist tonight to see how the reaction is... http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/b...4/IMG_3322.jpg http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/b...4/IMG_3323.jpg http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/b...4/IMG_3324.jpg http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/b...4/IMG_3325.jpg |

Re: Project "flip that truck or else!"
Finally! I kept thinking, were are some pics of the new ride! I was going to pm you tonight and see if you got the tranny fixed? And I answered my own question reading your thread, COOL! What did you end up finding to be wrong?
I' ll keep my ears open for you. |
Re: Project "flip that truck or else!"
I think that the speedometer cable was bound up in the floor shifter linkage. I'm still adjusting it so that it sits right with the seat and dash. They had first gear going under the dash.

Re: Project "flip that truck or else!"
Polish that Turd Bro!
|
Re: Project "flip that truck or else!"
A polished turd is a shiny turd!!!LOL....
Love to see the budget when you're done.... By the way, why is 6-lug a CON?!?!?hahaha... Have fun |
Re: Project "flip that truck or else!"
I don't mind 6 lug but it should say 6 lug drum brakes..
|
Re: Project "flip that truck or else!"
MSD box removed, Blaster 2 coil removed, distributer removed... installed mallory HEI (off my 68 since it's too big) last night... still back fires through the carb under acceleration. Going to check timing tonight and vacuum leaks...
|
Re: Project "flip that truck or else!"
Hope she sells for ya glad to see another one back on the road.
|
Re: Project "flip that truck or else!"
Changed carb to my 1405 Edelbrock (man choke) still backfires...going to autozone for a timing light tonight...
thanks Frenchblue72 for the words... i just hope to get the beast tuned up, the engine feels strong I just have to find the right timing setup.. |
Re: Project "flip that truck or else!"
I got one if you dont want to spend the money. also let me know if you need a hand.
|
Re: Project "flip that truck or else!"
talked to a buddy at work (owns a mechanic shop) and he's bringing his digital timing light and vacuum gauge tomorrow...
I would like to find a used HEI setup so I can keep my Mallorey unit. I sold the MSD parts off the truck.. |
Re: Project "flip that truck or else!"
I've flipped a few vehicles, one a 1990 Jeep Comanche pickup. I wasn't intending on selling it, but ended up getting an '05 crew cab pickup, so I didn't need the comanche....made a few hundred on that one. It's kinda fun making things a little better and making some coin off of it. Good luck!
|
Re: Project "flip that truck or else!"
I don't know how I missed "The Turd". That's a decent looking truck. Good luck with the sale Mike.
|
Re: Project "flip that truck or else!"
thanks.. got an 8-ball shifter knob tonight since i've been grabbing threads on the shifter for a week...
|
Re: Project "flip that truck or else!"
Set the timing to 12 today with my buddies timing light... runs better but still backfires under hard acceleration when cold.. Guessing it's the timing chain... Gonna get the trim on tomorrow that a board member sent to me.
Drove the turd up to Blockbuster tonight, wanted to die when warm while sitting at the light... any thoughts? I think I need to let it get warmer before I tune it again tomorrow... idles great when cold. |
Re: Project "flip that truck or else!"
More turd polishing today.. Got the driver trim from reddon05 installed... thanks.. had a few test drives today, still for sale..

Re: Project "flip that truck or else!"
Its good to see it with trim all the way around it.

Re: Project "flip that truck or else!"
You may need to replace the fuel filter to solve the back fire. Hets clogged and starves for fuel, but the timing is still advanced based on rpm, etc. Check it out.
|
Re: Project "flip that truck or else!"
backfire is pretty much gone with 12 degrees of timing... I think it has an exhaust leak on the driver manifold... and the oil leak is starting to kill my grass... another week and i'm changing it out myself...

Re: Project "flip that truck or else!"
pulled the 1405 off tonight and replaced it with my Holley electric choke... much better running, but still backfires under hard acceleration... Looks like timing chain, cover and pan gasket are getting switched this weekend.. I'm sick of oil on my driveway and grass!
Is the edelbrock electric choke or Holley better? I am planning on keeping the nearly new Edelbrock 1406 for my 327... |
Re: Project "flip that truck or else!"
So I got sick and tired of watching oil POUR out of the timing cover of this truck. Today I changed the timing chain (backfired through carb), cover, oil pan gasket and rear main gasket. I also had to fix the inspection cover since it "tink, tink, tinked" against the flywheel/clutch and made it sound like a bad lifter. What a dirty job!!!
http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/b...4/IMG_3410.jpg wonder why the oil leaked? http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/b...4/IMG_3411.jpg wonder why the timing was off? Broken tooth on the crank sprocket and the crank moved 2 degrees due to slack in the chain... This was a piece of crap "bicycle chain" double roller... $20 got me a new standard chain and sprocket set with 0 slack... http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/b...4/IMG_3412.jpg |
Re: Project "flip that truck or else!"
final pics tomorrow morning, I need to check on a new dampner too.. Are they suppose to have a groove where the front seal is?
|
Re: Project "flip that truck or else!"
not supposed to be grooved but you don't need a new one, go to your local napa and ask for a "seal n' sleeve" for the damper. its a thin metal sleeve that you tap onto the balancer to eliminate the groove.
