Yes, they were a factory option. P13 - SIDE MOUNTED SPARE. It shows the proper mounting location in the Assembly manual also.

Now that I bought this thing, how do you mount a tire on it?
|
Re: OEM in bed spare carrier
SOLD.. Thank you!!
I have never seen a complete assembly to know how the factory mounted the spare, anyone have any pictures they could share?? |
Re: OEM in bed spare carrier
Just curious, would one of these work in a Short Bed Fleetside? I think I saw one listed at LMC.

You need a J-bolt, plate w/hole, and a wingnut to hold the tire in place. |

Re: OEM in bed spare carrier
May be a dumb question and I think I know but just to verify, What is a j-bolt?
|
Re: OEM in bed spare carrier
Sometime back I tried and tried to get a look at the original mounting hardware but nobody on here ever did come up with a pic. Surely someone must have an old truck with the original hardware still mounted?

Re: OEM in bed spare carrier
Doesn't it use the same hardware as the underbed spare tire carrier?

I would guess that a carriage bolt would have been used originally, but that is just a guess. Jeff |
Re: OEM in bed spare carrier
Guy's I can help on this one , the J bolt washer and wing nut for a 67 68 69 camaro work's perfect , and probably isn't way off from correct ! I put this style in my 67 and I had a 67 camaro J bolt and it fit's perfect !
they sell those cheap on ebay all the time ,, |
Re: OEM in bed spare carrier
I think that the spare in the bed on a fleetside look's classic , when I was searching for a truck if it had been a stepside I would have REQUIRED it to have the fender mounted spare , the fender mounted spare on a stepside is wayyyyyyyyyyyy cool !!
here is a pic of mine with the spare in the bed http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/p...hortbedc10.jpg |

Re: OEM in bed spare carrier
19673ontree - are you meaning the j-bolt and wing nut for the camaro jack and tire?
|
Re: OEM in bed spare carrier
O.K. I found an original bolt for the underbed spare tire carrier. This bolt has a flat rectangle looking washer welded to the head of the bolt. This fits perfectly into the hole on this carrier. In other words it may be a match. Does anyone know what that little wing nut looks like for the underbed carrier? can you post a picture?
|
Re: OEM in bed spare carrier
Here you go guys. This bolt is exactly like the one I found with a under bed carrier. The head fits perfectly into the opening on the in-bed carrier. This auction is not me. I just happened to see it tonight and I think this is correct.

Re: OEM in bed spare carrier
That one is just like the one I am using now, it sticks out way to far. I myself don't believe that is what was originally used. Its correct for the under bed carrier though.

Re: OEM in bed spare carrier
If you notice the person in the auction mentions to "cut to length as required". I guess the person could be reading this post and is trying to sucker someone in. Although I doubt it. Because of the way the head fits into the opening on the in-bed carrier, I'm thinking it may require that the bolt be cut.
|
Re: OEM in bed spare carrier
You may be right, the guy on the assembly line might have walked over to the bench put the bolt in a vice, grabbed a hacksaw and cut it off to the proper length. ;)
|
Re: OEM in bed spare carrier
I will also note that the bolt goes though the flat side of the bracket, not the slotted side, (see post 3) if you use the ebay bolt it will just spin. It was some kind of carriage bolt originally.

Re: OEM in bed spare carrier
Would these have been used for wood and metal beds?
I have one on my SWB wood bed I was going to sell. Now I think it needs to be mounted to my SWB metal floor bed. |
Re: OEM in bed spare carrier
Mine was mounted in a steel floor bed. I don't see why it wouldn't work in a wood floor also.
