I finally got my 2wd
I've known about this blazer for almost 2 years now. It was sitting in a farmers grove along a highway about 35 miles north of me. I stopped to ask about it and it was a 72 CST 2wd. The body is shot. The only useable panel is the hood, and I'm not positive about that. I don't know if the top will be useable either. It has boards bolted to it for a red neck cargo rack, which flattened it in those areas. The hatch is busted a bit, but I've seen worse and might try to fix it. The owner bought it for parts years ago, pulled the motor for another truck and it sat. The rear end was a posi and he wanted that and the front suspension for a 5 lug and disk conversion on a 68 C-10 he has. I tried to talk him out of that and sell the whole thing to me, but he wouldn't give in. So anyway, I finally got it, without the front and rear suspension, for $150. All I want is the frame and hood and a few bits and pieces, the rest will be parted out as much as possible and the rest will be scrapped. If I can sell $150 worth of parts, I have a free frame for the rust free tub I got from AZ. I'll start a build thread for this when the time comes.

Heres the tub that will go on the frame.

And here's my front and rear suspension.

Re: I finally got my 2wd
If you only need the frame you got your money out of it. I need the stainless steel hold downs for the single wall top if you want to sell them.

Re: I finally got my 2wd
Looks like you have most of the parts. What are you going to do for a drive train. Now you just need the time.

I just got this off the trailer and I can already see the frame has some corrosion issues on mounting pads, some bent frame ends from moving it around. I'm hoping it will be useable at this point. The main rails look solid, the main crossmembers look ok. I was kind of surprised that the doors were in better shape than I thought. The passenger side has rust along the bottom edge, but very repairable. Hood is junk though, I might cut out some good sheetmetal from it though. |
Re: I finally got my 2wd
I took the day off to rip this blazer apart. I mean that literally too, it was barely holding itself together. When I unbolted the top from the driver side bed rail, the whole bed side fell off. we did this in about 4 hours. I'm hoping to get the rest of the body off the frame later this week, because I'll be away for the next week for work. Once I get back I'll have parts for sale on the parts board.
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...r/IMG_4369.jpg One of the rustiest trucks ever. There wasn't even a hint of torsion box left. Funny thing is that as rusty as it was, it is relatively straight. No major dents. http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...r/IMG_4370.jpg http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...r/IMG_4371.jpg http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...r/IMG_4373.jpg http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...r/IMG_4375.jpg Nice windshield frame eh? http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...r/IMG_4376.jpg The scrap pile so far. http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...r/IMG_4377.jpg http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...r/IMG_4378.jpg |
Re: I finally got my 2wd
Holy cow.... or should I say Holy Blazer!
At least you came away with a 2wd Blazer frame! :D |
Re: I finally got my 2wd
WOW, that thing is rusty!!!!!
.....A moment of silence for a fallen blazer.....:waah: |
Re: I finally got my 2wd
NICE! - congrats on the new blazer!
I wanted to get that blazer tub from Tom in AZ - but had no easy way to transport it to Ohio - :) looks like you have most of the stuff there to get it where it needs to be. For $150 - you did well - if nothing else than the frame - did he still have the 2wd title - that would have made it that much better... |

Re: I finally got my 2wd
I noticed how close you are to the RR tracks, I bet that's fun at night.

Re: I finally got my 2wd
Hope your up to date on your tetanus shots. Sorry, but the bed side, kinda funny. Surely there will be a rusty TOTM contest. Your a shoe in.
Clean tub. Looks like your well on the way. Good luck. |
Re: I finally got my 2wd
that'll buff right out.....
being so close to the tracks, you could just about throw the leftovers in a hopper car!! |
Re: I finally got my 2wd
Ha Ha! What we wouldn't do...
And my friends think I've got a problem! |
Re: I finally got my 2wd
Wow, That is one rusty blazer. You got your monies worth. (When I unbolted the top from the driver side bed rail, the whole bed side fell off.) I had to laugh. Good luck with your build. I'll be watching this one.

Re: I finally got my 2wd
I hate to say it, but that is even pretty bad for MN! Don't forget to pull the woodgrain chrome parts and the sport mirrors and inner brackets. Congrats on the 2wd frame...

Interesting story on how we met. I drove past his house a lot bringing my youngest to softball practice and games. When I bought my first junkyard jimmy, I was looking for wheels and tires. He always have chevy stuff around so I stopped to talk and see if he might have something. We BS'ed for a while and sold me the wheels and tires that are still on it, then he offered to let me use space on his lot for storage. Over the past couple years we got to know each other and help each other out. Can you guys imagine what this tub would look like after sandblasting? |

Man, I'd keep that rusty heap as far away as possible from any classic iron - I think it is contagious!
|
Re: I finally got my 2wd
WOW, I'm doing the same type of build with the EXACT same rust free Ocre colored 4x4 tub; small world!
|
Re: I finally got my 2wd
Looks like ya scored some good parts at any rate too bad the tub is so rusty..
|
Re: I finally got my 2wd
hgs_notes,
What are you going to do with the frame from the yellow blazer? If it's straight and for sale, I might be interested. Chad |

Wow you got a great deal

Re: I finally got my 2wd
I finished parting this beast out today. The frame is servicable, but not as nice as I had hoped. Some repairs will be needed. I have a few parts to sell, but not much. For my $150 I have a 72 2wd frame, a very good under dash wiring harness, rear view mirror, stainless windshield trim, a complete set of deluxe side marker lights, a servicable rear seat with both brackets and belts, a wiring harness from the fuse box to the top, a console that needs the hinge area repaired, a single wall top that might be salvageable (needs some holes filled, window replaced, and will still have flat spots from board being bolted onto it) and a hatch that has a couple cracks but is repairable.
Is it a gold mine? Nope. Was it worth it? You bet! I might even clear at least $50 from the parts I'm selling. http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...r/IMG_4513.jpg |
Re: I finally got my 2wd
I forgot that I also got a pair of doors that ain't that bad considering the rest of the rust bomb.

Re: I finally got my 2wd
After tearing a biceps tendon in July, I was very limited in what I could do. All my projects were put on hold. Well, now I can do a little more every day and it's healing up, so I started getting back to work.
This weekend I was able to remove the front and rear suspension from the longbed truck frame I had and get it onto the blazer frame. I still need to bolt up the front end, ran out of time today. It went pretty well with the help of a tractor bucket lifting the frames. Since this is really a project for later, my goals are just to get the chassis together enough to be a roller (almost there), set the body on the frame (temporarily), see if the one top I have will clean up enough to set on the tub, then cover it up and let it sit until my C-10 is painted and back on the road (hopefully next summer). I would still like to do the engine swap on the junkyard jimmy and fix the brakes, but don't know if I'll get the time. Since the injury put a crimp on all the honey-do projects also, the wife is making those my priority. Unfortunately, the summers get short up north here. Wish me luck. |
Re: I finally got my 2wd
Good luck!

Re: I finally got my 2wd
Stinks about the bicep injury - best of luck now that you are 'getting back to it'.

I got done with work early today and my son was around to help, so we headed out to the farm to see if we could make it look like a blazer again. As stated above, the chassis was bolted back together enough to make it a roller. The wheels are from my C-10 and the plain steelies are on the C-10 now while body work is being done. http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...r/IMG_5016.jpg http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...r/IMG_5018.jpg In this picture you can see the tub and my jimmy in the weeds. http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...r/IMG_5017.jpg Then we got the tub sat on the frame. No body mount bushings, or even bolts, just resting there. http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...r/IMG_5022.jpg http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...r/IMG_5021.jpg Then I got the rusted windshield frame off the beater top, and set that on the tub. http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...r/IMG_5023.jpg http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...r/IMG_5024.jpg The top is on, but not bolted down. The windows go up, but the doors won't open. They are kinda stuck at the moment until the top is straightened out and bolted into the correct spot. For now though, it is a roller, not spread all over my friends farm, the tub is not in the weeds any more. And most important of all, I feel better that I was able to get it this far. This is the parts of 5 different vehicles, 6 if you count the doors. At least 7 for when a front clip is found, then another for when I find the engine/tranny I want. I can't wait, but I will. |
Re: I finally got my 2wd
Now you have me wanting to go down to the local wrecking yard and see if that Jimmy tub is still sitting there that I should have bought a couple of months ago. Hopefully they put it in their "someone might give real money for this" section.

Looks like some good progress. I suppose you will have them both done by x-mas???
Or not... |

Re: I finally got my 2wd
Got any pix of how you got the tub off the ground and onto the chassis?
That would have been a site to see. I have to replace my body mounts on the Blue Blazer in my project list so I can start doing some body work - not looking forward to it though. :( Congrats on getting that far - looks great. |

Believe it or not, the top was harder to do this way because it was much higher and I should have tried a different way to place the straps. |
Re: I finally got my 2wd
hey what ya want for the two orange doors off the 2wd blazer

I have 3 vehicles, and I have a total of 11 doors. I'm going to have to sort them out and get rid of some. |
