My 60 Chevy Shop truck build
I just bought a 60 Chevy short /narrow Pick up. It is a little rough. I Know I have a 59 Fleetside build thread in the 47-59 board. But since that is more of a high dollar build, I kind of put it on the back burners. This truck(the 60), is running a Mr Goodwrench Vortek engine with a Holly 600. Saginaw 4speed, and the original rear (super low geared, have to change). Here is what it looked like when I first got it.
http://img91.imageshack.us/img91/4043/60chevy001.jpg The first thing I did was replace the newer hood with the proper 1960 hood. http://img91.imageshack.us/img91/3019/60chevy004.jpg As you can see in the second picture I already welded the rust on the doors and fenders. next it was the rockers and floor boards. these had to be replaced with new parts. http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/8199/60chevy008.jpg http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/329/60chevy009.jpg I got one rocker installed, will update as I continue. http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/1308/60chevy012.jpg |
Re: My 60 Chevy Shop truck build
You move fast... good for you.
|
Re: My 60 Chevy Shop truck build
Not that fast, I've had it for about a month. I just ordered new cab corners and rear bed steps. I tried to fix the small holes in the cab corners, there was no good metal to weld to. Good thing parts a pretty cheap for these trucks.

Re: My 60 Chevy Shop truck build
Welcome to the dark side as we call it.
I see you installed the outer rocker first.....I've been doing that last. I'm curious to see how the floors and inner rockers go for you doing it this way. |
Re: My 60 Chevy Shop truck build
The inner and outer are installed together (boxed in as in pic if you look closely). I installed them first to give me something to weld the floorboard to. The rockers are a direct replacement, while the floorboards have to be trimmed to fit. I don't see how you could do it the other way around. I actually completed the both sides just no pictures yet.

Here is the link to my fleetside build
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=348746 I finished the flood boards. I used the trim style floor pieces. I used the original mounts section and just covered it with the new parts (the mount section wasn't rusted bad) I cut off the bad metal, the coated what was left with Eastwood rust stabilizer before I tacked the patches on. Then used seam sealer to finish it up. http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/961/60chevy016.jpg I found a little more rust on the hood. Welded that up and did some body work. http://img239.imageshack.us/img239/5557/60chevy017.jpg http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/3254/60chevy014.jpg Got one of the fenders almost ready. http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/733/60chevy015.jpg I haven't got the cab corners in yet, thats next. |
Re: My 60 Chevy Shop truck build
Got a little more work done this weekend. Finally got the cab corners fixed. Welded just enough to fix the rust ( stayed with a lot of new steel that wont go to waste). Found some lead work that had been done on the passenger side.
http://img193.imageshack.us/img193/20/1000345ugd.jpg http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/4957/1000347i.jpg Here is after the initial body work. Still needs the final blocking and to clean up the bottom edge. http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/3992/1000363.jpg http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/1825/1000362z.jpg Also found a little rust on the rear fender when I removed the stepside. http://img193.imageshack.us/img193/5852/1000346w.jpg |

Re: My 60 Chevy Shop truck build
A little spare time after work yesterday. Got the lower rear fender (rust ) repaired
http://img200.imageshack.us/img200/7484/photo0018a.jpg And put together the chrome grill I found on line. I found the grill and headlight bezels at a truck junk yard in MN. I replaced the headlamp adjusters on my old headlamp assemblies. I haven't decided what color to go with the center bars. Either silver (stock color) or the color I'm painting the truck. http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/130/photo0019l.jpg |
Re: My 60 Chevy Shop truck build
:metal: Excellent welding work and flawless finish. :metal:

Re: My 60 Chevy Shop truck build
Got some work done these last couple of days. I started on the area below the rear window. Boy did it have a lot of dents. 50 years of work will do it.
http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/9302/1000390.jpg http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/7942/1000395a.jpg With this, and all the sanding and dings around the grill opening. It looks like my cab is ready. (except for the small ding I found at the center of my hood Where the chevy emblem goes) http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/7831/1000391b.jpg http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/6458/1000393c.jpg I have the three cowl pieces sealed and ready also. |

[QUOTE=1Bad62Pro/Street;3486052][CENTER][B][SIZE="5"]Yep.............
She's coming along good...... She could be here soon frmula505.............. Actually this was just going to be my shop parts hauler LOL. I am leaving the Mr Good-wrench 330 hp crate engine alone. I have an 03 Cobra I run at the track. My procharged Vette isn't a slouch either. My other truck build (see sig) should be a runner (haven't done anything to the 59 for about 9 months) . I just don't have time for them all. I do most of the work myself. |
Re: My 60 Chevy Shop truck build
I here ya bud. I had a 04 yellow GT that I made a BOSS out of. Traded it in like an idiot after I poured all that money in it. What all have ya done to ya 03 Cobra? Last year of the SVT Cobra. Had a buddy who had a yellow 03 with a lot of horses under the hood, and still got 22mpg.

Worked a little on the 60 last night. Since The cab is ready time to start on the bed. I have the fenders almost ready. So I take the plywood off the floor of the bed, and this is what i found. http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/3707/1000396x.jpg http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/7302/1000397.jpg Took all that rot off, looks like the shop truck getting a new oak and stainless floor. At least the cross sill are still in good shape. http://img162.imageshack.us/img162/7594/1000398.jpg |
Re: My 60 Chevy Shop truck build
Had some spare time over the weekend. Weather was cool enough to work. in the garage. I got the bed off and on jack stands. I removed all the sills. Will clean and paint this evening. I decided to weld up the stake holes and roll ends.
http://img38.imageshack.us/img38/5237/1000400u.jpg After welding got the body work (there and rear of fender) done. http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/6223/1000405.jpg The body work on the rear fenders is done. http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/5526/1000403w.jpg The hard part is left. I have a couple of small rust holes next to the fender bolts. Have to weld them up and do the body work on the bed sides. |
Re: My 60 Chevy Shop truck build
After work last night scraped, sprayed some degreaser, and power washed the rear section of the frame. Ordering some drop springs, and gonna paint it black.

Re: My 60 Chevy Shop truck build
Worked on it a bit over the long weekend. Ran into a little problem.I am installing a 5" rear drop kit (springs, shocks, and panhard rod). Well the bottom spring bolts were frozen onto the trailing arms. I cut the bottom head off, hoping I could pound them up. No dice, had to get my air chisel and destroy the lower cup. With the springs off I cut the top of the bolt, still froze. The I got my drill and drilled out around the bolt. Let it soak with penetrating spray over night. Finally was able to pound them out. Sorry I was so busy cussing that I didn't take any pictures. Well the parts should be in any day now. I'll paint everything tonight and post some pics.
As i was looking at my now upside down bed (to dolly out the bed panels behind the fenders) I noticed a couple of rusty areas. Took care of them. http://img200.imageshack.us/img200/3666/1000407t.jpg http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/6348/1000409y.jpg http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/8388/1000408a.jpg http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/3730/1000410.jpg |

Re: My 60 Chevy Shop truck build
Weather was nice and cool last night, so I was able to do a little work. I got the bottom of the fenders and bed undercoated. Yes it looks like I missed a spot at the rear cross sill. I'll take care of that this afternoon.
http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/494/1000412.jpg Also got the rear half of the frame painted. I'll have to lift the truck( once the rear suspension is back together waiting on parts) to get to the front half. http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/2116/1000411h.jpg |

Maybe you might want to try this. It is still coming along nice though.

Re: My 60 Chevy Shop truck build
The leading edge does look flimsy once the roll is filled. I like your idea. Will update thanks

Re: My 60 Chevy Shop truck build
Just curious, what did you spray the rear portion of the frame with? Since it is a "shop truck" did you use an automotive paitn or just a Rustoleum type product?
|
Re: My 60 Chevy Shop truck build
They sell Rustolium by the quart. I just buy that and use one of my spray guns. On my other truck (the 59 chevy see thread in sig) I used farm implement paint. It's a strait enamel thinned with reg paint thinner. I durable as all hell. but takes forever to set. Can't use it on something you are going fast on. And your right it is a gonna be my shop truck, I just get carried away when working on my vehicles. Nothing wrong with a nice looking shop truck.

Re: My 60 Chevy Shop truck build
1 7/8 j bed exaust tubing.

Re: My 60 Chevy Shop truck build
Don't feel bad about making it look nice. My feeling is - if I don't like how it looks I'm not going to enjoy owning it/driving it.
As soon as my '46 gets home from being re-wired (tomorrow, fingers crossed) I plan on doing the same to the rear portion of my frame. My bed wood is already out so I know my frame it is good shape..well, all but the rearmost cross sill. It has a small bit of rust through - guess I'm gonna have to buy a MIG welder. I haven't welded in 20 years (no MIG's then) but I guess a cross sill no one will ever see is as good a place to practice on as any! I'm considering buying a Harbor Freight cheapie, or a small used Miller, Hobart, or Lincoln from Craigslist. Advice appreciated. Anyway, I'm rambling but I like what you're doing to your truck. I'll be following along and posting more stupid questions like this one: When you weld up the stake holes, won't rust form on the underside of the welded plate/inside the tube? What, if anything can be done to try to prevent that? I was thinking if you could slosh some POR 15 or other rust converter using a long handled brush or even by turning the bed side upside down? Or am I worrying over nits? |
Re: My 60 Chevy Shop truck build
I don't worry about rust on the underside because I live in a dry climate. Your pretty far from the beach you should be ok. We only get rust where water settles. If you have the bed off you can paint with brush and long handle or just drop it in there like you say. By the way i used to live in El Sereno right down the way from you.
And no question is stupid, other than the one not asked. |
