Project NOT4SLE
I am starting a build thread on the 72 truck I bought to be a daily driver. It is a SWB truck with PS, PB, and AC. It is in relative good shape with minimal rust on the drivers side floor board. NNo holes through the metal though.
Initially the Water pump was bad, it had no thermostat, and it leaks a little oil from the transmission somewhere. I replaced the thermostat and housing, the water pump and was going to rebuild the Rochester carb until I found out it was for a 69 427 corvette which will still fetch a good amount of money on ebay. So I am dumping it on Ebay and bought a new Summit 600CFM carb, intake and filter. Plans for this truck are a 4/6 drop, 20" Coys, 295/40-20 rear tires and 255/40-20 front Toyo tires. Down the road it will also get a nice motor built, interior done, and then a final paintjob. I have not decided on a color as of yet but it is leaning towards a silver/black/red paint job. Of course the name on the project is what I ordered when I registered it. On to the pics, http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c6...2/IMG_0170.jpg http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c6...2/IMG_0172.jpg http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c6...2/IMG_0174.jpg http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c6...2/IMG_0176.jpg |
Re: Project NOT4SLE
This is what the thermostat looked like when I got it
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c6...2/IMG_0185.jpg Got the thermostat and water pump replaced and moved on to this carb, http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...3/IMG_0244.jpg Me working on it a bit :metal: http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c6...2/IMG_0188.jpg This is the New Summit 600CFM carb and intake going on the truck now http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c6...2/IMG_0258.jpg http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c6...2/IMG_0260.jpg Next up will hopefully to get it all installed tomorrow, check its running condition and get to the tranny leak so I can get to driving this thing. I do need to figure out what size bolts are used for the seat mounting bolts as the seat has none. anyone know? |

Subscribing to a sweet build.

Re: Project NOT4SLE
Finally got a break to work ont he truck some more. Cannot wait to get this thing on the road and it is still a beater. Who knows what will happen when it is lowered with wheels and almost ready to come off jackstands again. LOL
Finished pulling the OEM intake manifold off, cleaned up the gasket surface, marked the DIst but washed off my marks  Ill have to learn to time it too then. Tomorrow I am hoping to get the Manifold and distributor back on before I have to go to work. http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...3/IMG_0292.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...3/IMG_0299.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...3/IMG_0300.jpg |

Re: Project NOT4SLE
I have been working late nights and not getting up till noon so my days of working on the truck are non existent as it is already well into the 100s by noon around here. Had the evening off last night and got up and worked on the truck a bit. Till I realized I needed a couple new bolts for the intake to mount the AC brackets.
What is everyone doing with factory valve covers to get rid of the extra holes when going to an aftermarket carb set up? I have the tube off the manifold which I guess I can just remove, then two holes on the driver valve cover. One I can get a plug type cap for and the other what should I use? |
Re: Project NOT4SLE
I installed all the gaskets after finishing cleaning off the mating surface, and got some sealant on the front and rear seals and installed the gaskets.
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...3/IMG_0309.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...3/IMG_0310.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...3/IMG_0312.jpg The bracket holding the throttle cable to the manifold had to be modified a bit. I clearanced out the side a bit on the inside edge of the back of the bracket. The manifold is square back there which I am sure is like this on the edelbrock as well. http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...3/IMG_0313.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...3/IMG_0315.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...3/IMG_0317.jpg |
Re: Project NOT4SLE
I finally got around to installing the carb on the truck and was going ot get everything dialed in to get it running however i ran in to another snag.
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...3/IMG_0331.jpg I figured out my brake booster issue as the carb has a fitting on the rear of the carb, I did however run in to a fuel line issue. The double feed line is hitting my AC brackets. A simple fix would be to bend it at a 45* angle to clear the bracket. What does everything think? http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...3/IMG_0334.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...3/IMG_0335.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...3/IMG_0336.jpg I did get a breather for my valve covers as well as one containing a PCV valve for the other valve cover. I just need to figure out the oil filler problems now. So i finished putting my air filter on and called it a day. http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...3/IMG_0338.jpg |
Re: Project NOT4SLE
I think i would go with a 1" or 2" phenolic carb spacer and that should get you above the AC bracket. I would go this route before bending the carb fuel line.
what oil filler problem you referring too? |
Re: Project NOT4SLE
i used a 1 inch spacer on mine.

Re: Project NOT4SLE
I purchased a carb spacer plate today along with a skip white distributor. I figured I see no sense in timing the oem original distributor on this truck to get it running.
If I am going to patch this motor till OI build a new one I figured I might as well try to help it run better till then. I also ordered a set of 90* spark plug wires, a crimping tool and a dress up kit to continue putting lipstick on a pig. Ill have pics hopefully on friday for you. |
Re: Project NOT4SLE
never had one of the trucks with the stovepipe filler on the valve cover, may be easier to swap out the valve cover if you cant find a grommet to fit well. does a air breather fit there. your making good progress, keep up the work!
|
Re: Project NOT4SLE
I was thinking about just switching out the valve cover. However I really did not want ot put any money into this motor while I get other stuff done and build my motor for this truck.
However, THe UPS man showed up and it is Christmas in August today. :metal: This should get her on the road and running within the next few days. I work tonight from midnight till 8am and sunday morning 6am till 2am, YES 20 hours. so Monday is the day Im shooting for to get her running and parts installed. http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...3/IMG_0340.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...3/IMG_0341.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...3/IMG_0342.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...3/IMG_0343.jpg |
Re: Project NOT4SLE
Just an FYI, those crimpers are wire crimpers and not the ones used for crimping ends on spark plug wires. You might get them to work okay but they are not correct.
These are the correct plug terminal crimpers. http://go.mrgasket.com/ProductImages/500/170036.jpg They make a world of difference in the quality of the crimps, for plug wires. Editted, I guess looking closer at the pic, there is some crimp spot on the handle that should work. Kind of hard to tell. |

[QUOTE=vegaschevy;3489609]I was thinking about just switching out the valve cover
Vegaschevy, I have the same style valve covers laying around. Let me see what kind of plug or breather It has. I wont be in need of it if you want it. |

Cannot wait till Thursday so I can work on the beast again. Worked all weekend a bunch of hours
|
Re: Project NOT4SLE
I used a spacer on mine as well but it's because I used a stock GM aluminum intake which is slightly shorter and I installed an HEI distributor so I needed clearance for my breather over the dizzy.
|
Re: Project NOT4SLE
Any updates?
|
Re: Project NOT4SLE
tomorrow morning I am hoping to have this beast running. I have been working days, then nights, then both back to back and so being awake during the day to work on this pig has been non existent.
I installed the Dizzy, and ran all my wires the other day. No pics uploaded yet. I also am not using the spacer now as i got the fuel line bent and hopefully it seals up well when tightened.... HAHAHA Tomorrow morning I am waking up and working on her though. I am hoping to get the radiator back in and fuel hooked up. Then she should be ready to fire up. |
Re: Project NOT4SLE
my buddy picked up a 67-68 cowl hood for this truck in Ca today. So all I need is some small stuff to complete the swap lol
|
Re: Project NOT4SLE
cool...I'll be looking forward to the pictures.
|
Re: Project NOT4SLE
You didn't want to use the spacer instead of bending the new fuel line? And are you sure your breather is going to clear the dizzy?

I got a few hours work completed and the fuel line ran. I need to reinstall the rad and fire it up. I will probably be putting in the 71 tank I have as this one seems to be in worst shape inside. |
