Speed limit 60

Hi all, thought id share some progress pics of my 60 Apache. Purchased off a buddy of mine that imported a number of classics into Australia, this was the only one that he hadnt sold (???), so i snapped it up. I needed a kool vehicle that would help me retain my drivers licence, so i figured a 6cyl pickup would be perfect! Basically it was in pretty good shape, so i have only made cosmetic changes to date and just some minor mechanical maintenance. The real fun is about to begin though, with some major suspension changes coming, hence my joining of this fine forum! I'll be asking plenty of questions and seeking loads of advice regarding suspension mods, so please bear with me if i ask some dumb things, there arent alot of these pickups around these parts to get ideas from!

The day i picked it up. (Does anyone recognise it? I was told it was purchase in Vegas, and i found a NAPA receipt from Mexico and some Mexican coins in the ashtray!)

Hello from the other Colony! Lot's of free advise given here. Lot's of knowledgeable people. You'll find some handy information in the Historical/This I Know/60-66 model changes. Nothing is a dumb question here unless you want it to be.

What a beautiful truck. I really like the 1960 hood, it was after all the one the truck was originally designed for. I've always been partial to the straight six, they look with finned valve cover, multi carbs, chrome side cover, etc.

Re: Speed limit 60

Thanx guys! From what ive seen already of this site, i think i'll find an answer to all my questions, extremely comprehensive site...awesome!
And yeah, im more than happy with the six thats in it, but i wouldnt mind switching over to an auto at some stage, just for the cruise factor! But thats gonna be a another set of questions for another time!!

Oh ok, not being real familiar with these models i just assumed they were the original ones. Id say your right though, there was evidence that the steel rims had been put on to replace some bigger ones at some stage (probably to sell)as there were tyre rub marks in certain places indicating that it had much bigger wheels and that it was much lower before i acquired it. The lowered rear coils stashed behind the seat was a bit of a giveaway as well!!

Thanks man! Yeah its a bit hard to spot in some pics, the top of the cab was white when i got it, so we eye-matched the pale green and repainted it body colour, then painted just the 'cap' of the cab with House of Kolour Organic Green candy. Made a huge difference to the overall look of the truck! Im going to be repainting the whole truck shortly for more of a kustom look, still a pale green but in a satin finish with shaved door handles, mirrors and emblems. That look may not appeal to everyone, but the current paint although looking fine in pics, needs some attention.
And if i dont like what it looks like, i can always do it again, its only paint!!

Thanks Jason, i was only just checkin your truck out!! I was reading all the comments about how far to lower yours, and i gotta admit (and this is from someone who usually slams his cars to the pavement!), you wont have to go ridiculously low to make it look sweet! Very nice job you've done on it!!;)

Re: Speed limit 60

I was a "ten pound pom" I lived in the Kingston/ Woodridge area when we first emigrated , then moved to Red Hill when I left home, this was back between 1973 and 1980.
I used to work a lot of venues around town like the Queens hotel, Pipps night club and the old Cloudland’s ballroom in Bowen Hills, the Playroom, Bombay Rock and the Jet club on the Gold Coast, we used to see rock and roll George cruising around town in his old Holden (as I remember it was an FC or FJ I) on most Friday and Saturday nights.
Lots of memories from those days but this is all ancient history and probably doesn’t belong here.

Havent been here for a few weeks, so heres some updated pics of my 60. Myself and a few of the guys from my club decided to do a one day repaint, so i thought a satin finish of the original colour would be the go. So 6 hours later and $91 in materials we had it painted, pinstriped and some quick logos on the doors for a bit of an ol skool look.:metal:

Wow, love the door art. Great job.
And, if you don't mind a dumb question from a "yank," I thought I had heard that you couldn't tag a car in Australia unless it was right hand drive.

Hoodlum Jim 10-10-2009 07:38 AM

Re: Speed limit 60

Thanks Bill! In my state (Queensland), you can register a left hand drive vehicle but it has to be at least 30 years old. We can have either a full registration (unlimited use) or a concessional/club registration at a much discounted rate but restrictions on when/where it can be driven, and fitment of safety belts. Its pretty much the same in all states of Australia now.;)

Probably about 15 years ago I sold a Corvette to two guys (one in the US, one in Aus) and the US guy said he converted them to right hand drive and shipped them to the Aus guy who sold them there. That's where I heard that. I guess they had a business going where they must have made some good bucks.
It was a 87 Corvette and I guess it was easy to do the conversion on because of the completely digital dash and the rack and pinion.
Thanks.

Hoodlum Jim 10-10-2009 07:53 AM

Re: Speed limit 60

That would be right, this system has only been put in place within the last 10 years, but only for 'classic' vehicles of 30 years old or more, anything earlier still needs to be converted to right hand drive. There are quite a few companies in Australia that specialise in left to right conversions.

Cheers.
