My 1965 Shortbed Build
I thought I would start me a build thread on my truck. Im trying to keep this truck pretty simple and thats getting hard to do. Ive got CPP 2 1/2 spindles and 3" springs on the front and 5" springs for the rear and will probably add a small block to it. I am also using a CPP panhard bar. Putting rear disc brakes on it using Impala SS rotors and metric calipers with brackets from Speedway. Im also installing a wiring kit from Rebel wire. Ive got most of the front susp. done waiting on my tie rod ends to come in to finish and run the the brake lines and install shocks when I decide what Im going with on those. I ran into a snag with the rear last night. The axles that came out of this truck was shot so I pulled a set from the 66 longbed I have and didnt pay any attention before I sent them to be drilled to 5 lug and they are different spline. So now I will be swapping out rears. But Its all good I got to pull it down to install my springs, panhard bar,and brakes. Im going to leave this truck looking like it is going to clean up and paint inder the hood and chassis. Im going to paint the inside of the cab and put a new mat in. Thats kinda the run down. I will update some more soon.

Re: My 64 build
Yes Im leaving it 3 tone. Blue white and rust. I am looking for a nice BBW truck or a Suburban to build a nice ride with. Ive got enough parts to build a BBW truck but I would like to find another complete truck or a burb. If only I lived out west. lol. BTW I love this board. I live on here seems like. Ive even got fired back up on the square bodys. I had a sweet 79 swb a few years ago.

Re: My 64 build
cool build

Re: My 64 build
what route did you go to set up the front for 5-lug? great progress so far
|
Re: My 64 build
I got CPP drop spindles and went and picked up the rotors, calipers and bearing etc. for a 73-87 truck from Napa.

Re: My 64 build
I made some progress the past week and rolled it out to take a look. Still got to finish wiring. And I also got to finish plumbing the brakes.

Re: My 64 build
I think that you need to clear some space in your garage. I could <cough> help you out by removing that chopped yellow toy in the background. :)
Stance is nice. How's the ride with the springs? I keep meaning to make time to put mine (3 & 4") on. |
Re: My 64 build
Hadnt got to drive it yet. I just took it off the stands and rolled it out for some pics. Im jonesin to get out and put some miles on it. Trying to get it done to go to Lebanon Tn for the Redneck Rumble. lol. But it has 5 1/2 on the front and 4 on the rear.

|
Re: My 64 build
Nice build... I like how the rear wheel/tire tucks. :D
|
Re: My 64 build
Thanks guys its been hard building something that is going to not be all shiny and clean. But I think its turning out pretty cool now. :ito:
|
Re: My 64 build
So what's next for the build?
What motor is in there? |
Re: My 64 build
Its still a 6 with a 3 speed. It will be in there until I get back from a show in Tn towards the end of this month. Im going with some old school style small block and a 5 speed prolly. Im tossing around building a cool 6 cyl and a 5 speed but damn parts are high for them. Something with a 5 speed. :metal: Im also going this afternoon down to my grandads farm and going to try and find some old weathered barn wood to use in my bed. Going to clean up the interior a good bit. Just trying to get it road worthy right now to go to TN.

Re: My 64 build
My vote.... keep the 6! :D
You just don't see them, and that' why I'm leaving my 250 in my '69. We're planning on pulling it out this winter for a rebuild. Parts a quite expensive for them, but definitely look good when their done. And I'm really digging the barn lumber idea; I think it will look killer! |
Re: My 64 build
My vote also-- Keep the 6
|
Re: My 64 build
Well Ive not got much to update other than Ive been driving the tires off of my old truck. Cant wait to get a 5speed in it. Ive struck out on the barn wood but have located a sawmill that has some white oak that has been on strips drying for a few months that has turned. Im going first thing in the morning to pick it up and then off to get exhaust ran. I love the old look. Dont have to worry about it like C10addict said. I went to the parts store in it a few nights ago and its was a hour before I could leave. Everybody was checking it out. I dont have a floor in it and some would look and see the rear disc and was shocked. Thats what I like the most about it. Folks think its just a turd.

Re: My 64 build
great to hear...i love the parts store story...it's old & crusty but somewhat modern at the same time...how did the wiring turn out, & how does it ride?
|
Re: My 64 build
I doubt that the white oak will be dry enough yet. you will have a shrinkage problem

Re: My 64 build
It drive and rides very well. Was suprised. The wiring was very simple and straight foward. I would recommend the Rebel harness. And I was wondering about the oak. Im going to go look at it. He didnt say how long it had been drying exactly buy he said it was already turned a good grey shade.

Re: My 64 build
I got my floor put in the bed. I am pleased with the way it turned out. Ive had so much fun with this truck. It gets more looks than most nice old cars in trucks in town. With no worries. Wish I could figure this point and shoot Sony camera out. Sorry for the blur.

Re: My 64 build
Cool pics CWT. Nice job on the bed wood.
|
Re: My 64 build
sweet...the bed fits the look nicely...it reminds me so much of a '64 my dad used to have...any other plans for it?
|
Re: My 64 build
Going to put a 5 speed in it to make hwy cruising a little better. Im going to clean up the inside and under the hood. Im hoping to do a 2 carb set up on the 6 cyl not sure yet. Im pretty stuck on keeping the 6cyl it runs very smooth.
|
Re: My 64 build
Love the look of the truck! Tell us some more about the rear disc setup...
|
Re: My 64 build
Im using like 95 Impala SS rotors with Gbody (metric) calipers. I bought a set of brackets from Speedway Item #: 91641010. I used the rubber hose off the front of a Gbody car and ran over to my new hard line. Built a bracket to joint the too and clip it on. I used a 70 Corvette master cyl for manual brakes. Bolts right on and uses the stock truck rod. I ended up with around $200 dollars in the rear set up. I got all my parts from Napa. Here is the link to the caliper brackets.
