"Road Toad" 70 SWB S/Side
3 Attachment(s)
My last truck to be restored is this 70 SWB 4x4 that I bought off Ebay.
It is a second owner truck, and from Kentucky. The truck had been repainted and had rockers replaced about 10 years ago. Other than that it had about 42k miles and was actually in decent shape. We are replacing the rockers, kick panels, cab corners, cab mounts, and passenger fender pocket. The young man that had it did not have time or the money to tear it up..... It is a 3 on the tree with a 292. I would like to find a 6 cyl tach dash, 292 PS bump and brackets, a clean set of vent windows, and a pair of tow hooks to get it the way I want. We will take the stainless off the truck and buff it out. Like the others we will Raptor the underside and both sides of the front fender wells and inside the rear wells. I bought a new tailgate and front panel, and got a pair of rear fenders off the forum, so I have some parts to trade, lots of parts. I have an offset A/F so we can run power brakes for my daughter. We will rebuild the engine, trans, and replace the seals in the transfer case and axles. May add A/C if the cost to rebuild what I have is not too much. |

Today we tore the bed off and trial fitted the rockers and cab corners.
Since it is raining, we will probably grind the welds in the shop tomorrow and blast the cab then DP90. |

Re: "Road Toad" 70 SWB S/Side
Excellent score on the project truck. Gotta love those swb 4x4s. Does it have a lift already or is the suspension stock?
|
Re: "Road Toad" 70 SWB S/Side
very nice truck to start with... looks like your making headway already. good luck with your project.

Well we have gone past the point of no return.
Took a perfectly fine driver work truck and have started making it too nice to haul anything. My daughter started blasting all the small black parts. We will use an offset air cleaner since we will run power brakes for her. I need bad a set of tow hooks and a 292 Power sterring set-up. |

Don't know if I was more proud of her blasting or trying to paint the parts.

Starting to get parts back from paint.
Will be Medium blue bottom with white top. We Raptored the inside of the fenders and outside of the front inner fenders. The front fenders are painted black epoxy on the inside. |
Re: "Road Toad" 70 SWB S/Side
I can tell already that this is going to be another sweet truck. I think ill just drop off my truck (well about 500 pieces of my truck) at your house so you can finish it up for me!

Little more progress.
The frame is ready to be painted and blasted, and the 292 is ready for the machine shop. Although the axles are hown, they are off along with the leaf springs. Looking for a set of tow hooks and a 292 PS set-up. |
Re: "Road Toad" 70 SWB S/Side
Are you going to keep it 3ott or make it a four speed? And its a little bit of a drive to gruene hall isnt it.
|
Re: "Road Toad" 70 SWB S/Side
Will keep it three OTT.
I have only heard about one other like that in a 4x4, but my other 67 2x4 is OD OTT. Except for the lift, I want to keep it as close to stock as possible. |
Re: "Road Toad" 70 SWB S/Side
I am planning on the Raptor bedliner for my inner fenders, back of fenders, frame, etc. Would you recommend it?
|
Re: "Road Toad" 70 SWB S/Side
I have used it n three trucks now a little more each time.
First the inner liner fenders, and hood bottom, then both sides of the front inner fenders, cab bottom, bed and hood bottom. I would not use it on a frame, there would be no gain and things would not fit well. This stuff really needs to sit a week to get really hard. It gets harder with time. I have not used it inside the bed since my trucks are for show and resale. My thought is to scratch it up them shoot it on there. Remember, this stuff is tintable, so you could match the truck color if you wanted. |

Well these are not that good of pics, but we have the leaf springs, axles, frame, and all cross members blasted and painted. All the black interior parts have been painted. Bedsides should be finished next week, and we will rebuild the column and paint it.
Still need a fairly priced set of tow hooks, PS pump brackets for a 292, and a really clean on the column manual shift lever. This truck will have the radio antennae, Have any of you run a power one? Any ideas? This truck frame is so clean I don't think it was ever driven in grass....... |

Ok a little update.
My daughter feels that she may not be able to drive this truck to high school, someone might scratch it. I told her it s just a truck, and that several years in prison for manslaughter is worth it to protect your paint...... We have rebuilt the axles, trans, transfer case, 292, carb, and installed new Warn hubs. Painted the rims, and the unique six cylinder offset power brake air filter. So the drive train is totally rebuilt. I am trying to decide if we install and original A/C I took from another truck that is complete with 6 cylinder AC brackets, very rare. Truck has the Totally stainless engine bolt kit and body kit also, along with the greasable suspension bolts and heavy front leaf spring hangers. |

My 67 4x4 has a different control arm than this truck, although they end up in about the same place but at different heights.
My 67 is VERY touchy going down the road, 5 degrees on the wheel will change lanes. Any ideas? It also has a dampner on it. I took a week off to tear down the ZX and clean it up. It has been neglected for a couple of years, and now I have an excuse to drive it. |
Re: "Road Toad" 70 SWB S/Side
Engine and parts all look great!

Re: "Road Toad" 70 SWB S/Side
Is the swb fleet bed still available?
|
Re: "Road Toad" 70 SWB S/Side
Conroetrucker, do you still have the left-over bed and rear fenders??
|
Re: "Road Toad" 70 SWB S/Side
Sorry guys, that stuff is gone.
I do have some repop stuff like grills and stuff available, and some really clean 67 cab trim. Will advise. |
Re: "Road Toad" 70 SWB S/Side

Sorry guys it has been a while since I posted.
We have rebuilt about everything and the painting is done. The bed went together today, and we will mount it this week and put on the fenders, steps, and tailgate. I post again then. Take it from me, a metal bed is not near as pretty as a wood bed, this thing is beautiful and the pictures can not do it justice. I wish I had all my trucks done in wood. We used a polished stainless kit with polished stainless strips. I Raptored the wheel well bed side, and the bed tops are filled. We put blue tape on the bed to keep from scratching it, so if it does not look too shiney on top and around the edges, it is protected. The wood was epoxy encapsulated after all holes were drilled, the final finished in clear urethane. |
Re: "Road Toad" 70 SWB S/Side
Conroe, that wood bed is beautiful. What species wood did you use and where did you purchase your parts from?
|
Re: "Road Toad" 70 SWB S/Side
that looks AWESOME!!!
|
Re: "Road Toad" 70 SWB S/Side
Im really jealous!
|
Re: "Road Toad" 70 SWB S/Side
Well let's just say we went over budget on the bed portion......
The original sides had some serious rust, and because the sides are two piece, with reinforcing creases pressed in, it was not worth the effort to save them. The tailgate was bent, and even the taillights and front panel were rusted out. Bought a used pair that had roughly the same issues, but scored a really nice set of fenders rust free. Soooo Mar-K had a big sale with free shipping, and we bought the sides, oak floor, and polished stainless rails and cross beams from them. The polished SS hardware is from Totally Stainless. So everything back there is as it should be, but not s single bolt is from the original truck. It looks so good I may jerk the metal floor off the red 4x4 and do it in oak also. It has got to increase the value $7-8k. With all the underside detail work you are doing Silver7, you might want to consider wood real hard if you have not. If you want PM me your emaul and I will send you the high resolution pics with the fenders on when we get that far. If you wanted it pretty bullett proof you could Raptor the bottom once together, but I think the finished wood on the bottom is killer. When we put this on the lift to install the exhaust they are going to die. |

A little update, mounted the bed today and the tailgate, then hung the rear fenders.
This set also shows the 292 and drive train in. Paint is not buffed out yet, will wait until we hang everything. |

Well the painter and I finally got our schedules in synch and he brought the cab back.
Danny Raptored the interior floor, firewall, and cab bottom. We had to replace the cab corners, rockers, and a small piece of the kick panels. We used our lift to get it off the cab stand, then dropped it on the frame. |
