Running with no hood

Could I get a ticket for driving on freeway and town for not having a hood?
I live in northern Cali

Re: Running with no hood

I think technically it is probably against the law, but I've run my truck around quite a bit with no hood, and passed cops many times without even a second look. Heck I even drove around for a bit with no bed and no hood and didn't get any funny looks from the cops.

Re: Running with no hood

It would be one of those 'subjective' issues. Don't do anything stupid & you'll be ok. Do something dumb on the other hand....

Re: Running with no hood

In the State of North Carolina it is not illegal to drive with no hood on your truck.
I drove my truck with no hood.... And no bed on my truck here in Cleveland County.
Family in Law Enforcement confirmed that for me.
Although you must have turn signals showing and working in the front.
You must have brake/turn signals in the rear when you hve your bed off as well.
I will have my truck on the road soon with the bed off.
Extra light in the back...not counting on the wide hides.....

Re: Running with no hood

pro street has it - LEO wants to see signals and lights. And as Scoti said, if you dont do dumb stuff they typically wont get you on front signals. they dont have anything about no hoods, no bed, etc.

Re: Running with no hood

Examples of being stupid:
Burn out in a Walmart parking lot.
Burn out at the local drag strip on the grounds in front of county deputy
Witch tore hom slap up and followed you home at night leaving the drag strip for 8 months.
Reving your engine up at a state trooper....
Burn out and spontaneous drag racing in front of a state trooper in a school zone...

Yea.....
Big "B" is grown up now.........

reason why im asking is im going to add drop spindel i just got today for the truck and i know the inner fenders are going to be in the way when im trying to drop the front and the inner fender hold the hood up... another question i want to ask you pro's is were can i find everything i need for my 84 front clip (cheap)
tie rods and bushing. the picture below show the front clip for a 84 c10 i dont know if i should replace all that now (before install) or after (install).
i havent really looked at my local parts store or even @ summit yet i fig alot of you guys know a lil more than i do!

Re: Running with no hood

I`m guessing that it would be easier to install it first, reason being that you`ll need leverage to drop the springs out, you`ll need the weight to assist you.

Sick5 07-09-2010 09:20 PM

Re: Running with no hood

i wasnt to sure if i should do just a arms or the hole clip
i really dont need the power steering since i already have the assist

Rich 5150 69 07-09-2010 09:27 PM

Re: Running with no hood

Caution is the word when removing suspension from the clip when not under the car....you`ll have very little control of the springs, use a welded link chain looped thru the spring and tied to the frame when you start breaking the spindle nuts loose, that spring will kill you if you get in the way....

Re: Running with no hood

In California it's called "exhibition of speed". A term I first learned about in high school in the 60’s. It's known as a violation of Vehicle Code 23109(c):

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d11/vc23109.htm

I found it much easier to rebuild the front end before it went into the truck since everything is completely accessible. I just used a spring compressor on the springs. I bought mine, but many parts stores rent them. And I bought all the replacement parts from the local Napa store. Everything needed is commonly available. If you're on a short budget (who isn't), I'd suggest doing an internet search for the specific parts you need. I've bought a lot of parts from AutoPartsWarehouse.com (and other places I can't remember) that ended up much cheaper than local, even after adding in the shipping.

Here are before and after shots of my front clip. Just seemed easier when everything was out of the truck:

You should be able to get an entire kit for the re-build; I got one for my 64 back in the day. Otherwise, if the front is still tite, I would do the cross shafts and the ball joints. They are the hardest parts to do once the truck is together IMO.

Turn signal lights are in the hood, therefore unless you wire some other lights for turn signals, then I would think it would be illegal.

(But the cops would need to know the turn signal lights are in the hood.)

I have a how to in the FAQ section, but it only deals with installing a later suspension in a 60-62, not how to rebuild it:
