Odometer

How exactly do you change the odometer reading...I'm buying an electric gauge cluster and the odometer reading is way more than what I've got on the truck and was just wondering how I can change the new one to where the old one is...thanks fellas...

Re: Odometer

over ten years old are exempt. It isn't any different than swapping in a non-broken gauge cluster. Before anyone starts screaming its illegal Wish I could help with the question. Thought I'd throw that in there though.

Re: Odometer

legal or not, I want it to read the actual mileage...lol...the mileage on the new cluster is 200K+

Re: Odometer

How many positions are on yourold odometer as opposed to your new one? If they are the same between the 2 speedometers then you can simply disassemble the speedos far enough to swap the odometers between the 2 speedo's. Done it a few times myself. even rest one to match the proper miles on my old 74 cutlass years ago.

Re: Odometer

The one and only electronic speedometer I had in my hands, out of a 91 suburban, I never really messed with. I'm sure you know how to do it on the old mechanical styles are asking specifically on the electronic one, correct?

My suggestion would be to ask a local GM service department and see if they can point you to someone that repairs them. They'd be able to do it I bet.

I like setting all mine to zeros :)

i hope this not the end of the 6.2/6.5?

Stitch 09-27-2010 09:02 AM

Re: Odometer

Nope not the Nd for the 6.2 or the turbo. I'm looking at another crew and if I get it, the 6.2 and turbo will be going in it.

Yep. BTW, it was $200 to go through a cluster. Not bad, depending on what is wrong with it. I didn't need a speedometer that bad, though.

Re: Odometer

it's a 6 digit odometer so it would be way easier to go back than forward...

Is there a little clip that holds in place like the old style?

Dunno I haven't gotten the cluster yet

Re: Odometer

Electronic clusters do not have the cable, so there is nothing to hook a drill to and make it move, hence "electronic". It's a sealed unit too. I'll grab photos so you know what I'm talking about Stitch.

Forgive the double post, but here is what I got. I took one part, though it does not have the cable drive part, it does look like the normal odometer once you get the unit out of the cluster.
If you know how to roll them back by hand on the old style, should be the same with these.
I'm waiting on permission basically to post or make a thread on "how to" on the roll backs or whatever you want to call it. I don't want to get Josh or Liz in trouble and decided to ask first instead of beg for forgiveness after.

Re: Odometer

Very cool Randy. Thanks for the pics. I thought it should be the same as the older cable driven ones.

Re: Odometer

I have never seen one of these with under 200k on it. So I guess I need to go ahead and try rolling one back myself to be certain of it all. But just from the looks of it taken apart this far, they're the same if you know how to roll them by hand. Never tried the drill thing, seems like a time consumer doing it that way though. Takes all of 10 minutes if you've done one before, by pulling the retainer pins and such. Takes more time getting them all lined up than anything else it seems. ;)

Re: Odometer

Yes a cable driven one,not electronic, and one with less numbers is easier. But with a variable speed drill, with a lock on low it should be like hands free. Not everyone is able to take it apart, but i thought this would be the easiest way.Because lining up the numbers is the hardest part.

Re: Odometer

Here's my spare electronic speedo that I pulled apart to reset to "000,000.0" for demonstration purposes only. Mind you that if'n I ever need to put this unit back into use I'll either swap out the odometer with my original one or reset this one yet again to match my current mileage. I don't have any desire to get busted for turning back an odometer on any vehicle to show less miles than what on it from the day it was ORIGINALLY MADE. Federal offence that is. Anywhere. PERIOD.

Start by making note of the speedo needle position. Then, using a fork, slip the tines of the fork under the base of the needle and GENTLY pry it up and off it's shaft.

Then the 2(TWO) screws in the face of the gauge and remove the face.

Then the retainer clip for the odometer and slide the odometer to the left to release the right side and lift it out.

On the back side of the odometer you'll see a plastic retainer that may or may not be in good pliable condition remove it VERY CAREFULLY as to not break it. If you do break it you can make a new one out of a thin piece of stiff plastic like the clam-shell packaging of replacement wiper blades using the old retainer as a pattern, an X-ACTO knife, a steady hand & patience.

Now you should be able to reset, from left to right, the mileage so that it matches your original miles on your vehicle. reassemble and everything should work without a hitch.

Re: Odometer

Yes it certainly does ,but what i read about the
FEDERAL ODOMETER LAW Motor Vehicle Cost Information Act, 49 U.S.C. Section 32704

3. A person transferring ownership of a motor vehicle shall give the transferree the following written disclosure

A) Disclosure of the cumulative mileage registered on the odometer,

B) Disclosure that the actual mileage is unknown if the transferror knows that the odometer reading is different from different from the number of miles the vehicle has actually traveled.

(b) Mileage Statement Requirement for Licensing. - (1) A motor vehicle the ownership of which is transferred may not be licensed for use in a State unless the transferee, in submitting an application to a State for the title on which the license will be issued, includes with the application the transferor's title and, if that title contains the space referred to in paragraph (3)(A)(iii) of this subsection, a statement, signed and dated by the transferor, of the mileage disclosure required under subsection (a) of this section

I've only done this when putting in a new engine or tranny. With no intent to defraud .And they imply it's ok if it's disclosed.Oh and i don't sell cars I only buy em.But someone could easly put in a different/lower milage cluster, heck i did that cause the Plainsman was in miles not km

This cluster was one set to 000000 for my 81 lemans, wish it was a clearer pic.this was done in 93.
