79 Silverado long box build
Hey guy's i'm new to this forum, mostley been on my other car forum all my life haha. Anyways, its the trucks turn to be fun. I'm planning on swapping a 4x4 frame onto my 79 silverado.
I found a 79 GMC 2500 for 500 bucks (canadian) and its in pretty good shape! got rust free doors and rust free bed floor. Hopefully i'll be picking that up this friday. Everything is open for suggestions! As it sits. http://i799.photobucket.com/albums/y...6/P8261798.jpg http://i799.photobucket.com/albums/y...6/P8261800.jpg http://i799.photobucket.com/albums/y...6/P8261801.jpg http://i799.photobucket.com/albums/y...6/P8261803.jpg In the end Something like this hopefully http://i799.photobucket.com/albums/y...truckdream.jpg |
Re: 79 Silverado long box build
Quick update.
Thinking of selling this truck and pick up a 85 crewcab. |
Re: 79 Silverado long box build
crewcab 4x4 or 2wd?
|
Re: 79 Silverado long box build
Crewcab. 4x4.
Well I didn't see any around so I went ahead with my original plan and picked up my GMC tonight. I'll take some Pictures either tomorrow or monday. |
Re: 79 Silverado long box build
Pictures are to come soon I promise. Monday i'll identifying what I got. and maybe clean out the bed.
Anybody know what size of rim would be ideal for a 35" by 13.5 tire? http://i799.photobucket.com/albums/y...jones_16/2.jpg http://i799.photobucket.com/albums/y...jones_16/3.jpg http://i799.photobucket.com/albums/y...untitled-3.jpg |
Re: 79 Silverado long box build
If you're going to go with a 35" tire, I'd go with a 15X10 wheel with 35X12.50 15 tires. They make a great combination and look great. Personally, I don't like tires that are too wide.
|
Re: 79 Silverado long box build
I'm thinking of stepping it up to a 6" lift by rough country and going with a 35 or 37. If i do 37 it'd probably look better with a 16'' rim

Re: 79 Silverado long box build
Well got the Green B***erd down to the bare frame today. Time to start sanding away and paint the frame.
Am i going to need the floor pan from 4x4? |
Re: 79 Silverado long box build
Cool build! Yeah you are going to need a high hump out of a 4x4 or manual 2x4.
|
Re: 79 Silverado long box build
Ok thats what I was thinking. Is that the part that is bolted down? I kinda want to take the cab to the junkyard before i start ripping my normal truck apart.
|
Re: 79 Silverado long box build
Depending on what your floor looks like you might need the removable hump and the section behind it. Check this out: http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/sm...?topic=11838.0

Re: 79 Silverado long box build
Bought a new Camera, so you guys can expect pics finally. Right now the entire body is off the frame of the gmc. Time to start cleaning it up and paint.

Rough country 6" Will be here tomorrow or Monday. LMC sent out there Cab to frame bushings today. Little slow. But forgiven. After the 5th, I'll be ordering inner fenders and paint/primer. |

Re: 79 Silverado long box build
Lookin good! Nice progress!
|
Re: 79 Silverado long box build
Thanks for the comments! Its crazy what 2 hours a day 5 days a week can do.
|
Re: 79 Silverado long box build
Why did you cut down so far to install 4x4 tranny hump? Was there a reason?
|
Re: 79 Silverado long box build
Yeah, notice the first picture on that post you see the difference? It's needed so that you can fit that transfer case in there. Plus it makes it a easier job to weld. And I cut it with a torch and only had 1 small fire :D

Re: 79 Silverado long box build
Been waiting on a front spring from rough country. Finally came in today. Rough Countey service is unbeleivably amazing. A++
So i've been busy putting the lift on and new bushings and such. Put a door on today and the front fenders. Also picked up a flaring kit and some brake line and redid the whole truck front to back. For only 50 bucks. Screw that buying pre bent ****. Heres some photos. I think i should probably order a new drag link.. But i did pick up some fancy, Got a new holly 670cfm carb, and some hooker Ceramic longtubes http://i799.photobucket.com/albums/y..._16/noaxle.jpg http://i799.photobucket.com/albums/y...kingpretty.jpg http://i799.photobucket.com/albums/y...ckinghight.jpg http://i799.photobucket.com/albums/y...ngtobecool.jpg http://i799.photobucket.com/albums/y...cokebottle.jpg http://i799.photobucket.com/albums/y...ingawesome.jpg |
