Cowl or not
Hey guys I have recently gained access to a cowl induction hood for my 81. I know an older lady that bought a suburban with a cowl hood. I got to talking with her and she said if I painted my hood black to match, I could just swap em out for free.
But I do like the look of a stock truck. And the cowl hood might require some body work where my trucks hood is primered and ready to paint. What should I go with? Here's my trucks hood. http://i901.photobucket.com/albums/a...eberry/043.jpg Here's the cowl hood http://i901.photobucket.com/albums/a...y/9b4b02d2.jpg Posted via Mobile Device Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Cowl or not
go for it man those things go for good money. if you don't like it, you could always sell it and buy another hood off craigslist or the junkyard. anyhow, good luck.

Re: Cowl or not
yeah, how could you NOT get the cowl hood?
|
Re: Cowl or not
I have a cowl hood and i hate it, thats just me though...

Re: Cowl or not
If I had the know-how, I'd make a functional ram air hood like the had on the 69-72 olds 442's.

Dude, Have you priced a cowl hood ? I'd be all over that like flies on stink !!! |
Re: Cowl or not
Meh, since they are 'all show and no go' I'd pass.
IMHO they are kind of a square body equivalent to those big exhausts on ricers. .02 |
Re: Cowl or not
I like the look of a cowl hood, but it's just not for me. If I were in the situation, I would pass.
|
Re: Cowl or not
i like them as much as i like mullets, neon paint, '90's billet wheels, shackle lifts and rear window louvers.
less is more, except for factory options. but thats me and im wierd. |
Re: Cowl or not
I like the look of a stock hood more, but thats a sweet deal.

Re: Cowl or not
ok I decided that I would go with the cowl hood. It would be a lot cheaper if i decided that I didn't like the cowl and wanted to swap out for a stock, than it would for the alternative. And how many chances do you get in your life to get a 300+ dollar item for free? Lol
There was one requirement for the trade, and that was that I needed to paint my stock hood, that I was giving them, the color of the car so it wasn't in primer. Here's some pics right after I laid down paint earlier today. http://i901.photobucket.com/albums/a...y/d45f5efb.jpg http://i901.photobucket.com/albums/a...y/b538f079.jpg Posted via Mobile Device Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Cowl or not
That grille would take no more than 15 minutes to swap out. They fit all 81-87 models if I recall correctly.
|
Re: Cowl or not
^^ true, but your grille is different since you have a single headlamp truck and the suburban looks to be a dual or quad headlamp truck
|
Re: Cowl or not
i have single headlamp truck ? i added pics looks dual to me lol

Re: Cowl or not
I have driven several vehicles with hood scoops. On a car, they can interfere with your view of the road. I doubt if it would happen on a square. That Oldsmobile cruiser is really sharp, congrats on keeping a classic on the road and really good looking. As long as you're painting, find another stock hood cheap, and paint both the scooper and the stocker at the same time so you can swap them any time you want. I know, easier said than done, LOL.

Re: Cowl or not
I'd a done it too
those hoods are pricey! |
Re: Cowl or not
Nbpro- I think he's talking about my truck. Mine is just a single lamp. My bottom lights are turn/park lights. Your turn/park lights are in the bumper.
I can make my grille work on her suburban, thats not the issue. I just want to know if the suburbans grille will fit on my truck without extreme modification. Posted via Mobile Device |

If it was functional, it would be a different story, but otherwise it is just a poser look. Same as the big ricer mufflers that kids put on. The look implies performance, which nine times out of ten is not there. Hope that helps you understand my perspective. Regardless, it is a good trade as a re-sale item given the circumstances the OP gave. |

Equivalent- Having virtually identical or corresponding parts.

Re: Cowl or not
How would you go about attaching the stock behind grill trun signals to my stock grille?
