Steering Wheels
Let's see some pics of the aftermarket steering wheels you guys are running in your square........Lost out on a sweet Grant Challenger wood one last night on Ebay. I may be just me but, a 13.5" wheel seems too small comapred to the 15.5" stocker??? My best to you and your families during this holiday season

This is the Grant I had on my 82. Close to the same diameter as the stock wheel. It was simple and cheap. It had a real good feel to it.

Re: Steering Wheels
I have a 70s camaro wheel in my 76, a little smaller and sportier then the truck wheel. Those wood grant wheels are nice too I have one of those in my 85 buick regal, again only a little smaller then the stocker. pricey unless you can score one off ebay or something though.

Re: Steering Wheels
I have one out of a 91 gmc, also switched shift lever and turn signal lever.

Re: Steering Wheels
Here's the one that came with my truck when I bought it. I don't really know anything about it. It just seems really large. I'll probably swap it out for something smaller once I get my truck rolling.

Re: Steering Wheels
13" Steering wheels are TOO SMALL! The PO put one in mine, I hate it, its terrible. Im waiting to redo my interior to swap it out though..

Re: Steering Wheels
I'll take the stock wheel all week long, and twice on Sunday. Aftermarket wheels are crappe, from what I've seen. I've had quite a few.

this truck still doesnt have tilt, so when i first got her going i swapped the factory big wheel for this 12" Bertini leather wheel that had been stashed away fro quite some time for my monte project. The company doesnt even exist anymore lol. but im a bodyman, and soon after putting it in a was so scared id completely @#$% up the leather that i took it out and replaced it with a 13" steering wheel from a buddies old speedboat, resembles a GT wheel but with more contoured foam. still using that pretty polished mount kit too for the boat wheel, kinda ashamed. that was the best nicest part of my truck, that steering wheel lol!

I guess it all comes down to taste. Aftermarket for a custom look, stock for a stock look, or different year model for a unique look. I agree that 13" wheels are too small. The 14" we have is a pretty nice wheel for what we paid for it, and it goes along with the theme that we're going for.

Re: Steering Wheels
mine is in my avator:metal:... Grant Challenger...Advance Auto Parts special...about $50.00 I needed the extra breathing room behind the steering wheel. I love it:metal:

How do you like that wheel overall, and quality wise? How good does the horn button work? That's the same one I've been looking at for my truck. Do you have any more pics of it, like the wheel as well as the whole interior. I'd like to see how it looks from the side at the column too. :metal: |
Re: Steering Wheels
its cool! i dig the wheel. thanks..ill get u pics soon

The first is the little 13 i was running in my c10-changing out to a stocker 91 4 spoke like the one I had in my burb.(kinda funny how your tastes change with age) loved this little wheel when I first got the truck 10 years ago and now I look at it and wonder what was I thinkin!!!
2nd is the Grant currently in my K5 with a billet adaptor, love this wheel. 3rd is my 91 burb stocker. |
Re: Steering Wheels
i dig the smaller ones myself. i think the 11-12" Look the best on the older style dashes, they seem to fit in better. I have a 13" on my truck now and it seems just about right as far as driving, and looks ok on the new style dash.
regardless, all the aftermarket ones just end up so damn close to ya with the mounting kit. this is the only thing i cant stand, but cant do much bout it anyways. although i have heard of taller guys pushing the column down a few inches, never tried it tho. |
Re: Steering Wheels
do any of the aftermarket wheels give you any more breathing room. One of the posts said his does . Mine is stock --no tilt . Keep trying to make the seat go back farther , but it won't go thru the rear cab panel :lol:
|
Re: Steering Wheels
yea i was wondering if any guys on here have done that trick where they push the colummn down a few inches? id like to know more about that. and as far as moving the seat, i like mine low, and found out that the lower you go the closer your feet are to the pedal so that kinda sucks too. ive just gotten used to mine, but many thoughts of building me a extended cab came into play after going through about 5 different seat arrangements. like i said, i just deal with it now, but anything better would be nice. haha for that matter, wish i had the correct year tilt column. i assume that would help the greatest. i took the liberty of getting a free one, but it is the wrong year. now i have one from a 91 suburban i should use, but been lazy and rather save it for one of the other projects.

Re: Steering Wheels
I have never heard of this process of moving the column. If it would really work I'm 100% ready to do it. Because when I get my truck driving then I will for sure need all the room I can get. I am 6'8"!! lol
