1992 GMC Sierra K1500 Shortwide Z71 Conversion
Okay, so this is both my daily driver and project; it's a 1992 GMC Sierra 1500 with the Southern Comfort Package. This truck has been through hell and back, and this was before I've got it. It's an extra cab model, with a 350 TBI engine. The day I picked it up: http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...t/182_0988.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...t/182_0989.jpg It had been hit hard, and destroyed the front clip. The guy that was in it when it was hit signed the title over to a salvage yard, and my cousin picked it up from there. My dad traded him a 24-foot gooseneck trailer for it, and the truck was mine. The frame was fine except for a little kink, nothing a little torch work couldn't fix. Anwyay; I'll post some interior shots, and then the rebuild. |
Re: '92 GMC Southern Comfort Daily Driver
Looks like you have your work ahead of you, but should be fun. Looking forward to your progress.

From what I know, tachometers are rare in '88-'94 GM trucks, so I was surprised to see that. As for the mileage on the odometer, I've put just over 1,100 since putting the front end back together. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...t/182_1008.jpg Power locks and windows, gotta love 'em. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...t/182_1010.jpg The horn button had the 'Southern Comfort' thing covering the GMC logo. That came off in a hurry, along with the hideous red and black steering wheel cover that you see here. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...t/182_0997.jpg I kind of like the wood trim. One of the two added in dome lights doesn't work, but hey! I've got bxtch lights, along with a radar detector. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...t/182_1011.jpg The factory radio isn't even hooked up, currently I've got a 10-year-old JVC unit hooked up that my dad yanked out of his Dodge flatbed right before he sold it. The idiot that had this truck, all he did was unplug his stereo, he didn't even take out the wiring. So I'm not really bugged by the clock covering the radio screen. |

Re: '92 GMC Southern Comfort Daily Driver
Now then, here came the not-so-hard part of removing the destroyed front clip, then temporarily putting on the front clip of my old '88 [That I will post sometime later.]
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...t/182_0998.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...t/182_0999.jpg It wasn't really as hard as I thought it could be, but it could have been worse. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...t/182_1001.jpg Now with that core support, fender, etc. off, it was time to put in some parts: Driver's side fender off of my '88, along with the core support. And the radiator, serpentine belt, and power steering pulley off of a '94 Chevy W/T V6 that my dad and I scrapped. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...t/182_1005.jpg Fender on, now for the grille. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...t/182_1006.jpg The grille is off of my '88 GMC, which I ran off the road and took out a road sign with the passenger's side. I busted up the grille and busted my sidemarker, so we did a little modifying. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...t/182_1007.jpg Took the top sidemarker from the destroyed grille that came with the '92, cut down the busted sidemarker, and bolted it in the repair. Now I just need to fix that broken grille. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...t/182_1012.jpg Front clip is back together solid, now it just needs a hood! [Don't you love those mix-matched turn signals? It didn't last.] http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...t/182_1014.jpg Hood is on! [And those stupid red double wipers are gone. I like normal windshield wipers that actually work.] http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...t/182_1017.jpg Truck is complete, even pulled those ugly ground effects running boards off. Now all that's left, is some new tires in the back. One tire was destroyed in the wreck, the other was blown out because the original owner decided to go burnout happy. |
Re: '92 GMC Southern Comfort Daily Driver
Now comes the new tires in the back. Was a pain in the ass finding 275/60 tires, got a couple used ones that looked almost new, $50 a piece. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...t/182_1026.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...t/182_1027.jpg And finally that temporary front clip comes off. Ran across a '90 Chevy front clip, a little darker than my truck, but no complaints. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...11220942_1.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...MG11220942.jpg Time to remove the entire front clip this time! http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...t/182_1039.jpg And on goes the new one. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...t/182_1041.jpg Now on goes the GMC grille and newer bumper. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...11271252_1.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...MG11271252.jpg All in all, it's still a project. Here recently I put a receiver hitch under the back; gonna get pics of that. Next plan is get some new u-bolts and some blocks and crank up the back a few inches, then bolt in some big ass Yosemite Sam mudflaps. And thinking when it comes time for all new tires, maybe run 275/60 in the front, and 295/50 in the back. Just a thought. |
Re: '92 GMC Southern Comfort Daily Driver
nice pics... its good to see someone take the time to put one back on the road

Re: '92 GMC Southern Comfort Daily Driver
Ugh. Took some newer pics of my truck, with the receiver hitch, and some better interior shots. Like an idiot I put them on my computer and deleted them off my camera. Well, last night my computer shut down on me and wouldn't let me back onto the desktop. I had to reboot it back to factory settings this morning and I lost everything.

Re: '92 GMC Southern Comfort Daily Driver
i know all about that...

Re: '92 GMC Southern Comfort Daily Driver
Went outside today, and took some new pics.
Exterior first: http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...Comfort/53.jpghttp://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...Comfort/54.jpghttp://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...Comfort/55.jpghttp://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...Comfort/56.jpghttp://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...Comfort/57.jpg Now for the receiver hitch! http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...Comfort/58.jpghttp://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...Comfort/59.jpg The hitch is a Reese and EZ-Lift cross-breed. The hitch itself is a Reese, but it's got the ears from an EZ-Lift welded on, and the EZ-Lift brackets. Lol. |
Re: '92 GMC Southern Comfort Daily Driver
Now, some new interior pics.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...Comfort/61.jpg Originally the doors had stupid wood trim. That irritated the crap out of me, and I pulled it off.http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...Comfort/62.jpg Southern Comfort! http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...Comfort/63.jpg I took this pic earlier, and at the time I had put 1,180 miles on it. Now it's a little over 1,200. Lol. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...Comfort/64.jpg JVC Head unit. My dad pulled this out of his '93 Dodge Ram flatbed before he sold the truck. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...Comfort/66.jpghttp://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...Comfort/67.jpg Torn up leather seats. Eventually I'll get them reupholstered. XD http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...Comfort/68.jpg Rear bench seat is still perfect. |
Re: '92 GMC Southern Comfort Daily Driver
cool build. i like the way you posted pics and narrated the thread.

Re: '92 GMC Southern Comfort Daily Driver
New Year's Eve wasn't as great as it should have been...=/ Got in a wreck with my '92. Was pulling a trailer with a scrap Chevy Lumina...the trailer started swerving and when I felt a big swerve I cranked the steering wheel left. The trailer went into the guard rail, and it's now a pretzel.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...Comfort/84.jpg Not sure how well you can see it, but this was the frame itself [It was a boat trailer my dad turned into a flatbed scrap trailer...and it's twisted now.] http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...Comfort/85.jpg This would be the steel frame over the original frame. The I-beams are destroyed. The rest is kind of okay. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...Comfort/86.jpg Bumper is toast. I'm gonna take the bumper off of my '88 and put it on here. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...Comfort/87.jpg Caved in the bed a little bit. Once the bumper's off, should be able to pop the dent off then primer it. Lol. |
Re: '92 GMC Southern Comfort Daily Driver
Here's some others that were taken just a little while after getting home:
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...Comfort/83.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...Comfort/76.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...Comfort/73.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...Comfort/74.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...Comfort/69.jpghttp://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...Comfort/72.jpg As you can clearly see...the trailer's a pretzel. |
Re: '92 GMC Southern Comfort Daily Driver
Sorry to hear about the wreck.
Looks like you made good progress on the truck. Your dash and gage cluster with the tach are the same as in my '92 K-3500 Dually. My stock radio quit working a while ago so now I will need to mount a radio like you did. Truck looks a lot better with out the running boards. |
Re: '92 GMC Southern Comfort Daily Driver
Nice work on it. Looks like it will be a great cruiser again!

Don't you love snow? That's sarcasm.
http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._1874677_n.jpg Sometimes wish my daily driver wasn't a 2WD. Right rear wheel is on an ice patch and the truck won't budge. Sh!tty! |
Re: '92 GMC Southern Comfort Daily Driver
Yep, I have about had enough snow. Our local weather forecaster keeps messing up the forecast.
We were only supposed to get a dusting of snow here in the flatlands of Missouri yesterday, but by the time the storm left our area we had well over 3 inches. My K-3500 works real well in snow, but ice not so well. If we have a lot of ice I usually drive the ole '86 4-Runner we bought new in '86. |
Re: '92 GMC Southern Comfort Daily Driver
does anyone know what wheels he has, or if i can get that style in a 6 lug? i've always liked those kinds of wheels.

i kinda figured. what are some knockoffs of AR i always liked their wheels them and MT but theyre just too expensive.

Re: '92 GMC Southern Comfort Daily Driver
Not sure to be honest. I'm sure though if you look around you can find the six lug version. I saw them on an '88-'98 the other day. 6-lug pattern.

Re: '92 GMC Southern Comfort Daily Driver
Figured I'd post these in this thread.

Re: '92 GMC Southern Comfort Daily Driver
Got some new tires that are gonna go on the front.
Cooper Cobra Radial GT 255/60 15 http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._3466880_n.jpg http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._3518555_n.jpg They're almost brand new, and they were off of the front of a junk '64 GMC long fleetside that my cousin scrapped. He saved the front tires because I traded him out of them, and he saved the hood and tailgate. Junked the rest of the truck; it was all bondo and rust. Also, popped my spare off the wheel [the tire was traded to my cousin to get the Cobras], cleaned up the wheel, and painted it black. The right front tire on my truck now, is gonna be my spare when I change the tires. Left front has cords coming out so it's junk. http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._1414664_n.jpg http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot...0_921888_n.jpg http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._5864519_n.jpg http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._7079324_n.jpg http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._1628856_n.jpg |
Re: '92 GMC Southern Comfort Daily Driver
Well, good news and bad news. Bad news first: The front hubs on my dad's 2000 Z71 are toast, so that isn't getting driven for a while. Good news! Fixed the left front side of my suspension, the tire was leaning in at the top, fixed that. Tomorrow morning, the Cobras go on, and the truck goes in for an alignment. So woo hoo for that! :)
|
Re: '92 GMC Southern Comfort Daily Driver
Pics with the Cooper Cobras on the front will be posted ASAP.

Re: '92 GMC Southern Comfort Daily Driver
lookin' good kid. keep us updated.
|
Thanks! Updates will be slow, as I have a lack of funds due to no job. :/ but I will update as much as I can. I'm thinking once I have the ability, I'm putting a skull theme into this truck. Rearview mirror, valve stem caps, license plate frames, etc. All that kinda junk. And after I repaint the truck, I have an idea for the cover. I have a pair of 67-72 GMC 1500 emblems, not sure what year they actually are. One says GMC 1500 V-Eight the other says GMC 1500 Custom, I'm gonna polish those up and put them on my tonneau cover, and stick a 'Dub Edition' [corny, I know] emblem on it. I wanna put a Southern Comfort graphics kit back on it, but I don't see it happening because I doubt I could find one. Especially for a 20-year-old truck. Anyway that's enough of my blabbering. Once I have the ability, updates will surely be constant. :) Oh, and if anyone could answer, would dropping an LS1 in this truck take away my pulling power? Cause even though it's a light-weight truck every now and then I pull a big ass trailer that was made out of a semi trailer. I just wanted to know if I'd lose the pull in the truck if I went from a 350 TBI to a 346 LS1.

Re: '92 GMC Southern Comfort Daily Driver
This, my friends, is why I LOVE the scrap business. Finding shxt in cars, that I can put in my truck. Example: PERFECT working Sony XPlod head unit and speakers.
Sony XPlod CDX-L410X Head Unit http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot...65060202_n.jpg 6" X 9" Sony XPlod XS-V6933 Speakers http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot...67935023_n.jpg Question! Anyone know a good place to put the speakers? I uh, can't figure out where to put 'em. I'm thinking the doors? Someone help me out here! |
Re: '92 GMC Southern Comfort Daily Driver
build a box and stick em under the seat, or build a console/speakerbox to go from the dash all the way back to the rear seat.

Also, I feel kinda dumb for asking this lol, but I don't know squat when it comes to wiring, so where do I wire them into? I know this is part of the reason this thread exists, but I still feel stupid asking this lol.

Re: '92 GMC Southern Comfort Daily Driver
Finally got a new rear bumper. :)

Re: '92 GMC Southern Comfort Daily Driver
yes it would, I was originally gonna do that aswell but min is a 4wd so I couldn't fit it. but you should be able to. how many speakers are going in it? and you might want to consider an amp.
