america's toughest truck

Has anyone seen the episode on history channel about a competition between a Toyoto , Dodge & a chevy square body across Alaska's rugged terrain . Well , guess who won :metal:. Ithink they run reruns , so check it out it's very cool. Think all of you would really enjoy seeing this.

Re: america's toughfest truck

it was a cool episode. The Toyota was the truck the drivers had to drive when their truck broke down. The square body was rocking especially in the end when it drove down to the iceberg.

just finished watching that this evening. I was on my feet yelling at the TV like a loon when i say the square racing towards the end! Man I miss my 4x4. I told the wife that if the chevy drove back out after backing into the iceburg I was going to buy another 4x4 short bed. well....the seach begins

83 BABY!!! NP205 and probably a modified 350 with a 350TH tranny.

Re: america's toughest truck

They were all from a different era, but it seemed to me that each of the guys were driving the most popular, reliable trucks that Ford, Dodge, and GM had manufactured.

Those Fords from the seventies, sorry for the F word:lol:, were just about indestructible. There are a lot of the 'ol f250's in my area still earning their keep!

The new dodge in 1994 was a lot different from any thing they had before, the new style probably helped, but i'm sure cummins had the most to do with the sudden increase in popularity. They are still the same as the any 'ol dodge in my eyes!

Nice to see the chevy come out on top! I know i'm branded but it's for a good reason, you can't beat an older GM!

I watched it on my DVR.
The Ford died due to a bad U-joint. That's BS, it's not a manufacturer specific part and can happen to anyone at any time.
I'm not pulling for the Ford, but the way it went out was bogus.
Now the Dodge, that was more up to character. The cheap built POS died several times and finally wouldn't restart. Should have pulled that junker out of the wilderness or burned it on the spot.
That little stepper kept on going, probably drove it all the way back to the starting point.

Re: america's toughest truck

I watched the show. The first time I ever tuned into Top Gear. I usually read the show description and say 'nah', but when the description said "America's Toughest Truck", I tuned in. I'm glad the old Chevy came out on top. Some things were pretty corny, but it was nice to see that stepper back down, hit the glacier and come back out...

I wonder what the outcome would be if they used three new trucks?? :chevy:

Re: america's toughest truck

I agree with the BS about the ford, if he would have drove that thing smart and not yank on the throttle there he might have made it. I'm not a Ford guy at all but that was kind bs. And as far as the dodge, I own one and i think if that guy would have diven it a little smarter he may have mad it. And im glad to see the chevy make it all the way!!! I did enjoy the hood flopping hahah he used a bungy strap one time around it hahaha could have done a little better lol. Vert ramp camper FTW

Honestly... I'd rather have the Toyota to cross Alaska, but I'd still rather own the Chevy.

Yeah, the chevy was bookin it to the ice and Tanner goes "it just dawned on me, I'm representing all of the American automakers" "and that's when it became about national pride" he beat the Toyota there and to touch an iceberg he back up into one.....it then preceded to start floating away but then he charged out of the water again and that was the end of the episode..

I know of a few people that carry that part in there box on a constant basis and they could have gotten a lot better trucks for $3000

Re: america's toughest truck

Yea that was a very BS failure for the Ford. The Dodge did epically fail tho I'm sure that could have been easily prevented as well.

Not up here. What you wouldn't give more than $800.00 for down south private parties up here ask for and most often get $25-$3200.00 for.

Re: america's toughest truck

My dad used to have a Ford from that area and it seemed like any time moisture got any where near the engine bay it would stall out. I remember trying to dry out the distributor at the car wash after spraying the engine.

When I watched that Ford going toward the creek crossing with speed, I thought to myself "he's not going to make it" and sure enough he stalled it. It was a bummer about the u-joint, but I'm glad the chevy won. Especially since I am building a 4x4 stepside right now. :metal:

that was just too funny! i agree that the trucks could have been closer matched, but it represented a large field of styles. check out the feb. issue of DIESEL POWER chevy kicking a#$ in a real match up!!!! like in the show, chevy is the king of the hill!

did anyone notice that in the begining when they where telling us about the trucks that he said the dodge had a 5.7L in it i have that same truck but in a standard cab and it only came with a 5.2 or 5.9 in a gas engine

big10ratrod77 01-20-2011 08:21 AM

Re: america's toughest truck

the dude with the chevy was funny how he was bragin bout the massive torque the 6.2 had then he pops the hood and it was a lowly 350 personaly, but the part that got me laughin was when he said "diesel" and "massive torque" in the same sentence, he was mislead. i woulda bought a 77 chevy 1 ton 4x4 with a 350 and a granny gear personaly and slept in the cab

but chevy proved its self a long time before those dummys got a license

Re: america's toughest truck

british version of that show is way better, also i thought it was bs on the U joint as well. That's like getting a flat tire and saying you lost

ThomasTedder 01-20-2011 05:34 PM

Re: america's toughest truck

Not at all a fair comparison. They had to buy a truck "sight unseen". What the hell did that prove? A more fair comparison would have been three restored trucks kept stock. The Dodge was too new for a fair comparison, but that turd died anyway lol. As for the Ford, those old trucks were tough as hell, but what kind of moron would embark on such a journey without a spare u-joint?

What really pissed me off was that rice burner always lurking in the bushes like there was no way it would fail because it was a Toyota. I've had a similar Toyota and I think they are over-hyped.

Good show, though. I thought it was entertaining and the right truck won.

Now I have to go post this video over on the Ford forum LMAO!
