Operation Second Chance!! 1970 CST/10 402 BBC - 454 BBC Swap
Well after regretting selling my 68 C10 project last year, a second chance to own and build a 67-72 Chev has presented itself and there is no way I'm letting it pass me by!
This evening I am off to pick up my new project :) After selling my 68 C10 a year ago exactly, and trading my 66 Chevy II moredoor last Friday for a fresh ready to go 454 BBC, I ran into the problem of not having anything to put my new big block into. So the search began... and this is what I came up with :D These are the pictures the seller sent to me, more to come after a bath and some fresh gas on the way home! http://i404.photobucket.com/albums/p...h/IMG_0715.jpg http://i404.photobucket.com/albums/p...h/IMG_0716.jpg http://i404.photobucket.com/albums/p...h/IMG_0717.jpg And this is what is going into her... (again more pictures to come once it is dressed up properly haha) http://i404.photobucket.com/albums/p...6851459_19.jpg I know the post of this build thread may be a little... premature... haha but I just couldn't wait to get back on the forum, and have something in common with the rest of you once again :D ENJOY!!! |

Re: Operation Second Chance :D (1970 CST/10 402 - Longbox)
Thanks for the early support! After doing a few laps around town right after I bought it, she is in the garage... parked next to the her soon to come power house! I can't wait!!!! This 402 will not be ignored though... I thought about selling it, but the truck is all original and all there, so I want to rebuild and keep the motor on the back burner :)
More progress and pictures to come tomorrow! But not it is time to finally sleep! I haven't had much lately... as the last few nights I have been like a 4 year old on Christmas Eve... just waiting for today to come so I could pick up my new toy :D |
Re: Operation Second Chance :D (1970 CST/10 402 - Longbox)
always good to have that extra motor ready for action if you ever needed it! looking forward to more pics.

Re: Operation Second Chance :D (1970 CST/10 402 - Longbox)
So after getting the truck cleaned up a bit, I crawled underneath and she is very clean, and is going to be great to work on. Here's a picture I took really quick with my iPhone right after I washed her and wiped her down.
http://i404.photobucket.com/albums/p...n68h/photo.jpg My question for you guys is, does anyone know what drop ratio, or what size drop springs I should buy to get her to sit where she is right now in the picture? I love its current ride hight, but want to do it properly... as I discovered the previous owner had a couple too many beer one night with a buddy, and they dropped the truck by heating up the springs with a torch. I am not worried about any damage done to the truck by doing this, as he never drove the truck like that... it was always just parked. Also remember it has a BBC in it... and another one is going in once I start the 454 swap, so something that will keep it at this ride hight wight a big block in it, but will handle the weight. Any help/suggestions would be great! |
Re: Operation Second Chance :D (1970 CST/10 402 - Longbox)
Anybody? haha
|
Re: Operation Second Chance :D (1970 CST/10 402 - Longbox)
your not alone!!!!!!!!!! great lookin truck i like the black with red but i am still wondering weather it is factory or not:crazy:
|
Re: Operation Second Chance :D (1970 CST/10 402 - Longbox)
Thanks 67chevy1series
Yeah I thought the same thing as well... but the seats, headliner, seat belts, dash pad, steering wheel etc. are all red... I know for sure that the paint is original. I'm not too worried about it not being "factory" as I'm not going to be letting this one go, and its "value" is not of too much importance to me, because I know what it is worth to me haha. I thought it was black when I first looked at it too, but it is actually a very dark "windsor blue"... (same colour as my Dad's original '37 Chev). |
Re: Operation Second Chance :D (1970 CST/10 402 - Longbox)
hmm ya im a stock factory guy, but i like a lot of customs that i see my dads has a 70 lwb fleetside 1/2 ton it was white with red , in 67 the red ineterior had the cab and dash painted red to so thats why i was wondering why your dash is black but it could be factory, they changed there paint stlyes around through the year

Re: Operation Second Chance :D (1970 CST/10 402 - Longbox)
I really don't care for red but that interior is sick
|
Re: Operation Second Chance :D (1970 CST/10 402 - Longbox)
Haha yeah I'm not usually one for the red either... but it actually doesn't look too bad.... obviously needs some re-doing, but it'll come with time. Right now my aim is to get that 454 in it, get it in tip-top shape mechanically, get it sitting with the perfect stance... then I'll worry about interior and paint.

Re: Operation Second Chance :D (1970 CST/10 402 - Longbox)
Haha glad I'm not the only one... but I'm also very glad I have a lot more to work with this time over the 68 I previously had...
This will be my first big block build, but I figured I may as well considering the truck already has a factory 402 BBC in it, so why not stick with the theme haha |
Re: Operation Second Chance :D (1970 CST/10 402 - Longbox)
she does have a great stance, low, but not too low. 3"in the front 4" in the rear possibly? dont take my word for it. that definitely the height i want for mine, it looks mean!
|
Re: Operation Second Chance :D (1970 CST/10 402 - Longbox)
If I do 5" drop in the rear and 3" in the front think it'll even out with the weight of the 454?

Any suggestions on the best place to order springs? I'm up in Canada so shipping might not be cheap either...

Re: Operation Second Chance :D (1970 CST/10 402 - Longbox)
Looks like a solid truck and a sweet looking big block for it!!!
For springs that drop looks like a 3/5 roughly. Check ebay for deals. Call Early classics enterprises and see what they can do for you. |
Re: Operation Second Chance :D (1970 CST/10 402 - Longbox)
Man I tell you what, I have made the mistake of letting a couple of these trucks go, and I have always regretted it. Each time I did it was a financial situation that forced it when I was younger.
Well except for my old 70 short bed, my dad strong armed me into selling that truck when I was in high school, but that is because I kept getting in too much trouble with it. |
Re: Operation Second Chance :D (1970 CST/10 402 - Longbox)
Well the 454 swap commences tomorrow :) I think I got most of the parts and supplies I will be needing... a little more than I expected but isn't that how it always turns out haha. Pictures of the tear down will be coming your way tomorrow!

Re: Operation Second Chance :D (1970 CST/10 402 - Longbox)
Nice to see another C10 in Lethbridge. My truck has a 2.5 / 4 drop and your truck looks a little lower than mine. I agree with others that a 3 or 3.5 / 5 would be what you're looking at. I'm kicking myself for not going a little lower.
|
Re: Operation Second Chance :D (1970 CST/10 402 - Longbox)
Awesome another member from lethbridge!
Uh oh, I just ordered some 3"/4" lowering springs yesterday :( Biggest reason I just went ahead with the 3/4's right now is cause the price was right, the springs that are in it now need to be removed asap, and it'll at least get me on the road for this summer. The 454 and everything going with it is tapping into the wallet. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Operation Second Chance :D (1970 CST/10 402 - Longbox)
Well sorry I didn't get any updates posted throughout the weekend, finally got a chance to take a breather and upload some pictures.
The tear down went extremely well getting the motor out of the truck, and its a very good thing I'm doing the swap... as my worry about finding rusted and seized bolts was relieved by another nightmare of merely finger tight bolts :S We managed to get the 402 out on friday night in a matter of 4 hours. When we woke up early on Saturday to get the 454 ready to drop in we came across a few road blocks... We discovered filings in the balancer bolt hole on the crank shaft, and noticed that the threads are a little rounded (from the previous owner). I have been doing some research and am hoping I can re-tap the threads and maybe use a longer bolt to catch some good threads. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. It was a very long and expensive weekend but hopefully it'll be up and running soon. Here's the pics I know you all like to see. There is a big gap in-between from when the girlfriend (in charge of the picture taking) got a little bored of the garage and went back inside http://i404.photobucket.com/albums/p...h/IMG_0862.jpg http://i404.photobucket.com/albums/p...h/IMG_0886.jpg http://i404.photobucket.com/albums/p...h/IMG_0871.jpg http://i404.photobucket.com/albums/p...h/IMG_0889.jpg http://i404.photobucket.com/albums/p...h/IMG_0918.jpg http://i404.photobucket.com/albums/p...h/IMG_0923.jpg http://i404.photobucket.com/albums/p...h/IMG_0925.jpg Don't worry, more to come as the install continues... |

Re: Operation Second Chance :D (1970 CST/10 402 - Longbox)
Yeah, but luckily, like I said the truck hasn't seen much driving in its recent years, and I'm thinking maybe the motor was out for one reason or another during its time with the previous owner.

Re: Operation Second Chance :D (1970 CST/10 402 - Longbox)
I'm ready to see another great truck come to life.
Barrett Jackson introduced reserve to the palm beach auction this weekend Would have been great if done a year ago. Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: Operation Second Chance :D (1970 CST/10 402 - Longbox)
Thanks 67c10guy!
I was actually just watching some of the Barrett Jackson a little earlier, and I agree with the addition of the reserve. Sorry I haven't had any new photos or updates on the truck as of late... it is coming down to crunch time for final exams and projects in my University classes right now, so unfortunately that takes precedence over the truck for the next couple of weeks. But after that she will have my undivided attention! :D I have also posted in the engine/powertrain forum to get some help with prepping and getting my 454 ready to go, if anyone wants to check it out any additional help and advice would be greatly appreciated! |

looking good :metal:

Re: Operation Second Chance :D (1970 CST/10 402 - Longbox)
Sorry I have been lacking on the updates lately guys! I have been making headway on it, but it is usually late in the evening/night and by myself, so once I get out to the garage I am in the zone and usually forget to snap some pictures. I'll be sure to add the ones I have taken (the install of the lowering springs etc), and of course some from this coming weekend when the engine will hopefully find itself right at home in the truck :D

Re: Operation Second Chance :D (1970 CST/10 402 - Longbox)
Cant wait to see the burn outs...

Re: Operation Second Chance :D (1970 CST/10 402 - Longbox)
Ok guys, didn't get quite the truck running this past weekend, my Grandpa went into the hospital, so I made the 8 hour drive to visit him on Saturday morning, and made the return trip the following morning... but here's what we managed to accomplish on friday night! Enjoy!
These first couple pictures aren't from Friday night, but I realized I hadn't added them yet. This shows how my truck sits after I installed my lowering springs (and removed the torched springs from the PO). http://i404.photobucket.com/albums/p...IMG_0959-1.jpg http://i404.photobucket.com/albums/p...h/IMG_0965.jpg And here's from Friday (sorry about the quality, just snapped them really quick with the iPhone) http://i404.photobucket.com/albums/p...68h/photo1.jpg http://i404.photobucket.com/albums/p...68h/photo2.jpg http://i404.photobucket.com/albums/p...68h/photo3.jpg http://i404.photobucket.com/albums/p...68h/photo5.jpg http://i404.photobucket.com/albums/p...h/photo1-1.jpg http://i404.photobucket.com/albums/p...h/photo3-1.jpg http://i404.photobucket.com/albums/p...68h/photo4.jpg There are more pictures to come, along with more work. But I have noticed my rear driver side is sagging a bit (a little lower than the passenger side rear). I know this is common in Chevys, but should I be worried? Is there anything you guys would suggest doing? I can take a picture soon and post it for you all to see. I also don't want to worry about it too much until I get the truck running, and drive it a bit and see if the springs maybe set, and level out a bit? Cheers |
Re: Operation Second Chance :D (1970 CST/10 402 - Longbox)
Truck looks great and the motor does too! hope your grandpa is doing ok
|
Re: Operation Second Chance :D (1970 CST/10 402 - Longbox)
Well the motor is in and running! :D :D :D haha "sigh of relief" I will post pictures and maybe a video (if I can figure it out) soon! The motor runs very strong and sounds GREAT!

Re: Operation Second Chance :D (1970 CST/10 402 - Longbox)
Thanks! Not I just need to raise some funds to afford the exhaust system for it so I can get this beast on the road!!! I hope I can come up with $700 quickly haha

Re: Operation Second Chance :D (1970 CST/10 402 - Longbox)
Well sorry it has been so long since my last update. I'm back in school now and haven't had much time or money to do anything additional to the truck, but here are some updated pictures since I haven't posted in a long time, and what I have accomplished lately. I installed a Holley electric fuel pump, got new door locks in, got my exhaust done (3" dual exhaust with Dynomax Welded Ultraflow mufflers), changed the valve covers, lowering springs, and have been enjoying myself driving it :)

I really want disc brakes up front at least, and hope to start tackling the bodywork next spring/summer once I finally graduate from University haha |
