NOS Black Shoulder Belt Set on Ebay...Not mine.

here is a set of black NOS shoulder belts on eBay right now. They are for a truck, they are GM, but they appear to be Newer GM brand NOS. You can tell by the 5-band webbing and the non dimpled male buckle retaining boots. Also, the retaining boots may be a bit longer than the 1967-70 or the 1971-mid 70s. I can't quite tell, but it looks like it. Nevertheless, they are a nice find, for someone wanting to add this rare option to their ride. I thought I'd let some of you know incase someone's looking.

Richard, That is where my little brother purchased his NOS seatbelts from. They are too rich for me right now. Last I saw $430. Mike.

Mike,
Yes, they are getting up there. I paid around $400 for my set, which has the correct 71-up dimples. These do not. Honestly, at these prices, I'd use car middle bench seat belts and purchase the boots from the Corevette reproduction websites to make a set for less. One reason being is that the buyer is already going to have to buy a new GM licensed buckle cover. If they were in the 200s, probably would be worth it.

I bet they fetch over $500, though.

I know they would :) That's the route I'd go. If you decide to, I can set you up with some console seat belt retainers for the shoulder belts. I have a few more sets.

Richard, So all I need to find is another NOS middle belt like the ones I bought from my brother and make shoulder belts? Mike.

Re: NOS Black Shoulder Belt Set on Ebay...Not mine.

Shoulder belt length is different from middle car belt length, I believe. Also if you want to get nit picky the pass car middle belt has a wavy floor mount and the correct truck belt has a flat (66-67 gm pass car) mount. I had an original set from a 72 that I documented all the stuff from so that I could have a set made for my 67 that was dead nuts correct.

Actually, I recently had an NOS middle belt from a Chevelle that matched the length quite close...give or take an inch or two. And yes, the car end has 2 ridges/waves. It should work as is, but I would imagine that it would not take much for a good vice or press to flatten out.

Re: NOS Black Shoulder Belt Set on Ebay...Not mine.

Could you post the info on the ends/exact dimensions here? Would make a good FAQ post for future reference. Also, I have a local guy with GM webbing who makes belts for a reasonable price. and I have a box full of faded belts with good male and female ends so I'm considering having him make me a good shoulder belt set.

Wow! Those belts are going for $610 with about 12 hrs to go. Hmmm, lets take a new guess...$750 ending?

Ok, I got some pictures and measurements.

When comparing my NOS truck female lap belt with the NOS shoulder female belt, there is only a difference of 1 & 1/2". The female shoulder belt is a little longer (1&1/2"). Therefore, any truck lapbelt should be just fine to use for the shoulder belt. The female truck lapbelt measured (webbing only) tip to tip, 42".

Ok, now for the male end. I measured my male shoulder belt (metal end to metal end), and it measured 28". So, a if using a car middle belt, it would have to be between 25-32 (metal tip to metal tip) inches to work. However, if piecing these together, all you need is the correct flat ends and any male belt that has webbing that exceeds 32 inches, and then have a shop sew on the correct flat pillar end. The waved/ridged car end will work...and you could even flatten it in a press or heavy duty vice.

Or, you could take the floor mounting end from a Female doner truck lap belt, and make the needed cuts and make one exactly like the flat truck male shoulder belt.

Ok, I was off by $40. They ended at $710. That should be a good enough reason to want to make your own using the corvette boots ;)

someone wanted them really bad:smoke: my first set of black ones was made up with corvette belts and boots with truck hardware. i have another set of oem out of a suburban that need restoring. after seeing how much those went for, i guess it's worth restoring mine.

so where is everyone finding the corvette boots? I've searched google and ebay and haven't found them...

Re: NOS Black Shoulder Belt Set on Ebay...Not mine.

You have to look them up on corvette parts distributors. I think they call them end covers. They will somewhat look the part, but for any truck with the window down driving, the belts will be blowing around banging into the rear cab walls. Trevor

You can, and if you want new GM licensed NRS buckle covers, they sell them in their truck catalog ($21 ea.), too.

Pretty crazy. The cynic in me makes me wonder if someone put together a set like I will for my super and then sold them as NOS with some boxes they had left over from their real set....

....anyone have any leftover boxes

I am seriously just kidding. I'd never pass them off as NOS but I am seriously considering making two sets and using one for my super and seeing what I can get on ebay with the second.

The only thing that makes me believe that the seller didn't make the belts is because the pillar mounting end is correct. Unless someone made one by cutting down the female mounting end...but I seriously doubt it. I think they are GM made...but I suppose it's possible the boots were swapped before posting them. Again, I doubt it. I really think GM used the corvette style because they were what was available.

If you make two sets, are you going to use the car mounting ends or modify the truck mounting end?

They will, but according to Trevor, keep your window up if the belt is in the boot. They don't hold as well as the original truck boots with the retaining dimple.

Re: NOS Black Shoulder Belt Set on Ebay...Not mine.

Not sure. Going to call the guy who has the correct GM webbing and who re-did my other belts for me. He does more than just these trucks so he might have the correct pieces from the car or might even have the correct truck ones...

Like everyone has said, you can make them. They just won't be 100% authentic. Not that the common person would know. I have ran a similar type setup, and I just don't like the way they don't hold the belts up out of the way like the originals I have. Trevor

I may get to test the waters on that pretty soon. I've got a set in the shop I had made with all the correct parts. I'm just waiting for the female part to get fixed. I didn't like the way they were done the first time around. Retractors and shoulder belts are all done. No I won't be listing them as NOS.

Don't tell anyone but 68-69 Mustang should belt boots are a dead ringer, and have the dimple.

They have a dimple, but don't look close to original. I'll snap some pics of my original boots. Trevor

I have had several sets from a 68-69 Mustang and Cougar. They are close, but still easy to differentiate.

Re: NOS Black Shoulder Belt Set on Ebay...Not mine.

I wasn't intending to suggest the mustang units were identicle, just close and readily available. I have had a couple sets of originals. I've also noticed that the lower boots in certain years of 80's blazers look similar, w/o the dimple. Was wondering how much heat it would take to make a dimple in them.

leddzepp 04-02-2011 07:41 PM

Re: NOS Black Shoulder Belt Set on Ebay...Not mine.

The dimple is what is seen on the outside. Inside the cover it is a molded "hook" so to speak that retains the belt buckle. Several people have tried to replicate the dimple, but it only leads to destroying the boot.
