70 C/10 from Cali to Illinois
I have been kicking around doing a build thread on mine so here it goes. I picked her up in February for $2400 and put her to bed till April when I could kick the wife out of the garage. She came from Modesto Cal. from what I understand the guy that did the work on the truck died and his son went out and brought mine and a 71 4X4 back. The truck had been painted blue and white the original color was gold. All it needed to put it on the road was tires, interior, front and rear glass then I got on this site and my mind started working.
So I went and bought a 72 for parts for $900. I took the glass and put it in mine then I wanted the 5 lug axles and disk brakes and it had a 350 which I thought would be a good swap for the 307. Here are some pix of when I was putting her in the barn for the winter http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i6...Dubovik009.jpg http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i6...Dubovik001.jpg http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i6...Dubovik008.jpg http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i6...Dubovik004.jpg http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i6...Dubovik006.jpg http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i6...Dubovik002.jpg |

Man, that's a great truck for $2400! It sounds like you're well on your way with it too.

Re: 70 C/10 from Cali to Illinois
This was the donor truck, it was supposed to have a Professionally rebuilt engine but it had a bad oil leak from the timing cover so when we got it to my cousins house and pulled the engine apart we found that the crank was scored like it was put together in a sand pile and the front cam bearing had spun so that went to the machine shop to be fixed $$$. Then I striped every thing I could off and took it to the scrap yard. Sold a lot of parts to members here. Thanks guys

Re: 70 C/10 from Cali to Illinois
That would be fun to run for a day or so!

Re: 70 C/10 from Cali to Illinois
Yea the guy was so good in it he took a tire off a rim I was impressed. The scrap yard is only a 1/4 mile from my house.

Re: 70 C/10 from Cali to Illinois
I brought the 70 to my cousin’s poll barn and started disassembling it to pull the engine and cross member. She has a granny 4spd so the removable hump was nice.

Re: 70 C/10 from Cali to Illinois
Found some intersting info on the diffrences from the 70 to 72.
1. the window cranks are 3/8" longer because of the plastic door panels. 2. the 5 lug axel's can be used in the 6 lug housing the axel's are the same length, to swap you need to change the brakes and drums. 3.The cross member can be swaped in by just enlarging the top front bolt holes all the other line up. 4. Inner and outer tie rod ends are different size The P/S pump pully dosen't line up with the 72 balancer using the 70 pully, working on this one but the fan and water pump line up |
Re: 70 C/10 from Cali to Illinois
And also, I'm pretty sure you could have left the original cross member in there. All you needed to change was the spindles out for the 5 bolt conversion I believe.
|
Re: 70 C/10 from Cali to Illinois
The ball joints are different they go in the 2 year increments 67/68 - 69/70 - 71/72 then 73 up are the same for all the 2wd shoe box model's. The 73-87 will also fit with the same modification on the cross member. The 73-87 are better because they have rubber bushings on the A-Frames. The main reason I didn't do just the spindles is that I had the 72 cross member and it was less work every thing went in one piece. Also the inner and outer tie rod ends are diffrent size.

I have the Cali Title and all the Cali regestation from 1970 till it was parked I think it was in 88 and a detailed list of work and $ that was put in it. The PO spent $600 for the paint suplies and $400 getting the 307 running |
Re: 70 C/10 from Cali to Illinois
Cool deal!

Re: 70 C/10 from Cali to Illinois
Took the the cross member to the car wash and made a mess but it cleaned up real nice. I used some ZEP Industrial Cleaner it is corrosive but it melts the 40yr old grease off of every thing . I sprayer everything with POR 15 it looks pretty good. I also cut the trans cross brace out so the reinstall of the engine and trans would be easier. I want it to look as clean as possable with out doing a frame off

Re: 70 C/10 from Cali to Illinois
Got the cross member in and brakes hooked up it has brand new calipers and rotors on it, Put new rubber brake lines on and new inner and outer tie rod ends. Bought a new booster and Master and new rear brakes & wheel cylinders and had the drums turned. Put new wheel seals in and installed the 5 lug axels.

Re: 70 C/10 from Cali to Illinois
Looks like you have a few projects going. I was thinking about a dually 4X4 before this one but couldn't find one that wasn't rotten.

Re: 70 C/10 from Cali to Illinois
I loaded it up on the trailer and brought it back home to pressure wash the under side then sprayed it with POR 15, I top coated it with Rustolem Semi Gloss Black I think it came out pretty good.

Re: 70 C/10 from Cali to Illinois
Thanks guys! I'm trying to figure out how some of these guy's do these big mods so quick but it could be just me being old and slow and maybe sometimes to much beer.:barn:
She had a little rot in the air in take for the vent so I cut that out sprayed POR 15 inside it before patching it in then sanded and painted the fire wall to cover the rattle can paint job the PO did. For doing it outside I got lucky and it came out pretty good it was fairly warm so the paint dries fairly quick http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i6...0/100_0698.jpg http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i6...0/DSC00657.jpg http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i6...0/100_0779.jpg http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i6...0/100_0781.jpg http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i6...0/100_0782.jpg |

Re: 70 C/10 from Cali to Illinois
Now it was time to take it back to my cousins place get it ready for the engine install. I had the block cleaned, bead blasted, honed and the front cam bearing surface repaired and cam bearings, like I said earlier the front cam bearing spun but luckily it wasn’t run very long. I also got a new crank, the pistons were new so I reused them and we figured they were 9 -1 because they were complete flat tops, I got a new Summit cam SUM-1788 it is pretty close to the 350hp 327 cam it says it will be a little lope, rings , bearings new lifters, a 2 piece timing cover, Mr Gasket ,Gasket set, new main bolts and head bolts, which I got GM Performance ones and they were only $35 through my local Chevy dealer, and a Remanufactured Summit 600cfm Carb SUM-RM08600VS, summit Ceramic headers and a few other things. The 72 engine had Aluminum valve covers and an Accel high voltage HEI Distributors with 10mm wires, I picked up the Air Gap Manifold for $100 on craigs list. It took a month wait to get to the engine because this Summer was so hot but we finally got it done . We got it started last weekend and it does sound healthy. The 72 also had new clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing in it so I got a lot of good parts out of it. And that is where I am to day with it. I’m going to the Junk Yard tomorrow to pull the brackets and pulleys off a mid 80’s truck so every thing lines up for some reason they aren’t lining up with the mix of pulleys between the 70 and 72 I am also going to pull the PS pump just to make sure every thing aligns.
Here is my cousin working diligently on it http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/k...e/DSC00690.jpg Here he is telling me I am #1 http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/k...e/DSC00691.jpg Done Before Paint http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/k...e/DSC00692.jpg http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/k...e/DSC00693.jpg In the truck http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i6...0/100_0807.jpg http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i6...0/100_0809.jpg |

Re: 70 C/10 from Cali to Illinois
I got the pulleys , PS pump, Alt, Fan, and all the brackets off an 85 or 86 Impala so I started putting it together with the long shaft water pump, the PS pump brackets were giving me problems with headers so I checked the old one it lined up perfectly then I put the Alt brackets on and that relocated it to the right side. The Alt plug had 3 wires coming so instead of reinventing the wheel I checked the old Alt and it fit with the spacer that came with new one so I mounted it and swapped the pulleys and all fit. The fan was to big for the shroud so the old one went back on all belts lien up . Now I have an extra alt, PS Pump and Fan I can't use so craigslist here I come.
Mounted the radiator and support from the 72 we put gas in her and after a few try’s she fired up and sounded sweet:metal: a little lumpy from the cam but very responsive. I have Cherry Bombs that bolt on to the headers for now but will be changed out with 2.5” exhaust all the way back. The next thing will be putting the front end on and making it where I can drive it on the trailer my cousin wants to kick me out so he can start working on his snowmobile. |
Re: 70 C/10 from Cali to Illinois
sounds like good progress!

Re: 70 C/10 from Cali to Illinois
Very nice! Snow mobile? Those are fun but every time I own one, it either won't snow or the dang snow mobile wouldn't run!

Re: 70 C/10 from Cali to Illinois
Congrats! Felt good to finally hear and feel it run? I was just there couple weeks ago. I too got kicked out of the shop, but at least I can walk outside my house now to work on the truck, which is so much fun. But, now I am noticing all the other little details that need to be done. Got the time just need more money! Good luck you will be driving it down the road soon.

Hearing her come alive was great got the heart pumping a little faster and at 63 I gotta watch that stuff.:haha: My problem is I have the money just can't find the time and with winter getting ready to set in I need to get as much done as I can before the real cold gets here, then she will go to my brothers barn unless I clean out my garage and where I can actually put 2 cars in it. My wife gets to park in it in the winter then gets kicked out in the spring. If I don't get a call on the trailer I want to buy I will be going over today and we will be setting the front clip on. |
Re: 70 C/10 from Cali to Illinois
Nice job! your engine looks great, and the rest of the truck as well.

Re: 70 C/10 from Cali to Illinois
Ok finally got some work done on it I am almost done with re wiring the Alt, spliced and soldered all the connections and re routed them down the right side of the radiator to the in side if the frame then up to the Alt for a cleaner look. I am putting all the wiring in the plastic conduit. I still haven't decided on interior color for the seat & carpet either blue or black. Going over tonight to mount the seat so I can pull it out to winterize it on Saturday, It really is a PIA to go over to someone else’s house to work on it. Here are some Pic's.
