Finally, a 72 for me!
1 Attachment(s)
I finally found a truck after more then 8 weeks of searching!
It's a 1972 Chevy Cheyenne, short bed/wheel base, 2wd, 350/auto. It was the 10th truck I've looked at, and it wasn't even for sale! The UPS guy who delivers where I work told me about it when I told him I was looking for a 67-72 Chevy. It's been in the owners family since new. He was going to restore it with his son, but he lost interest (got into Mustangs???). They haven't done anything with it in more than 2 years other than drive it occasionally, and he agreed that it should have a better home/life. Runs like a champ and it virtually rust free for a 40 year old truck. Rockers and cab corners have been replaced professionally and the cab supports look like they're new. Comes with all of the original parts (I know its missing the cowl, moldings, markers, etc - but it's all there), a stack of new parts, and all of the AC components from another 72. I'm picking it up on Friday and I'll post some more photos once it get it home. Thanks to all of you who gave input on some of the other trucks that I looked at and for giving me advice in general. Several of you suggested that I find something that was minimal rust rather than the options/specifics that I wanted, and that was the route that I went. I think I'll be glad I went that way. Look forward to me asking a thousand questions. -Matt, Lyman, SC |

Re: Finally, a 72 for me!
Thanks for the responses everyone.
I haven't completely made up my mind, but the plan may or may not include the following: Paint job of course – inside & out - Dark Blue and/or silver/gray - I'm not crazy about the gold, and neither is my wife, 2.5/4 or 3/4 drop, 20” wheels & tires, A/C, Spray in bed liner, Relocated gas tank, One piece windows, Power locks & windows, Retro Sound head unit with additional speakers, Chromed engine compartment, Bed cover, Bucket seats, maybe a 68 front clip.... I'm sure that list will grow/change over time, but that's what I'm thinking at the moment. Feel free to give me your input & advice. - Matt |
Re: Finally, a 72 for me!
You might want to do a search on the one piece windows. Some people not so happy with them.

Re: Finally, a 72 for me!
Sweet lookin' truck... :)
But ya lost me at 20" wheels... Gary |
Re: Finally, a 72 for me!
Sweet starter truck.....congrats!

Re: Finally, a 72 for me!
z10kl - I didn't know about the bad reputation of the one piece windows. Thanks for the heads up. Does anyone know if any of the issues with these have been fixed by the manufacturers?
Gary...To each his own, I guess! Thanks for the input & comments. Keep em coming. |
Re: Finally, a 72 for me!
Nice looking truck! Start with the obvious things to fix first, and drive it and enjoy it. Joseph

Re: Finally, a 72 for me!
I'd leave it that color combo, I think that yellow is so cool. But that's me, nice truck! Need more pics!

Re: Finally, a 72 for me!
Sweet starter truck!! My only advice at the moment is to drop it more than 2/4 or 3/4, especially with 20's. The 20's will look misproportioned with anything less than a 3.5/5 or 4/6 drop. I recomend the ECE 4/6 drop kit.
I would also leave the 72 front clip if it's all in good shape. |
Re: Finally, a 72 for me!
Congrats and welcome from Central Florida!
If the bed is ok I would rethink the spray-in bed liner. Real hard to take it out once it's in and if you want to resell it some day buyers might think you are trying to hide something. A solid short fleet bed is worth $$bucks. Just my opinion. |
Re: Finally, a 72 for me!
Get it running and safe, and cruise it for a summer. THEN you'll know what your'll want to do to it. If you dump a million bucks into and with never driving it much, you'll never know what you actually needed or what modern things you need or don't need.

Re: Finally, a 72 for me!
Thanks again for the great input guys. I can tell that this site and it's members are a great resource for guys like me who know just enough to be dangerous.
68Stepbed & JWall - After looking at some more photos, I think the 4/6 would be my best option. I can't go too far as my driveway has a pretty sharp angle. Hopefully this weekend I'll get some pics of the truck in my driveway and you guys can let me know what you think. Ackattack - that's a great kit, I'm sure, but it's more than the truck cost me! RenoKeene & JWall - good advice on the spray in bed liner. Maybe I'll just paint it with the truck and throw a bed mat in there. If I do go with the spray in, I'll be sure to take lots of before photos to document the condition of the bed. Thanks again guys. This week has been rough - it's slow at work and I'm counting down the minutes till I go pick it up which isn't until Friday afternoon. Thankfully I can read/research ideas while I wait. - Matt |
Re: Finally, a 72 for me!
Drive it and enjoy it for a while. Then throw down on it.

Picked her up this afternoon. Here's a few pictures after I got home.
The PO had the original spare wheel and original tire which you can see in the third pic. He also included the complete AC system from another truck. You can see some of that in the bed with the spare. What you can't see in the interior shot is the box of parts from what they had started to remove & restore. He also gave me new door panels, armrests, window fuzzies, dash pad, etc. He's also put a piece of clear vinyl over the build sheet on the glove box door to protect it. Anyone see anything interesting on there? Can anyone tell me what "custom sport truck" consists of? Is that the same as it being a Cheyenne? |

Some more pictures...
Engine compartment looks to be close to stock and in need of a good cleaning. The side moldings from the bed & tailgate, along with the bed rails and tailgate cap. The box of AC components scavenged from another truck by the PO. He told me he took everything. Hard for me to tell what's there and/or what missing. I'll dig into that later. I've decided that my plan is going to be a 4/6 ECE drop based on MANY recommendations, 20's, and a 68 front clip from GMC Paul's. FYI - he emailed me a very thorough list of all the items I will need beyond his 68 body kit to complete that swap. Thanks Paul. It may take some time, but you'll get an order from me eventually. That being said, I plan to sell the various items that I won't need to help fund my project including the moldings, fenders, hood, doors, etc. If you can give me any input on what these items may be worth, and/or if you're interested in anything, let me know. It may be a while, but that's the plan. Thanks, Matt |
Re: Finally, a 72 for me!
I don't know the value but I would be interested in the bedrails and tailgate protector when u figure out what you want for them.

Thought you may find this interesting, they list "sport truck" as the same. |
Re: Finally, a 72 for me!
truck looks solid Matt , one question though why are you selling the doors?
|
Re: Finally, a 72 for me!
Hart Rod - I'll try to send you a PM tomorrow about the bed rails. I'm going to clean them up some to get a better idea of the shape that they're in.
Midniteotto - You've got the first chance at the grill. I'll try to clean it up an get some pics for you. I might need it a while, but when it comes off, I'll let you know. Thanks for the "sport truck" info. Much appreciated. red69ss - The doors are going to need some work and GMC Pauls 68 body kit comes with doors. I would rather hang new sheet metal then attempt to save those doors. That's just me. I know a lot of people on this board won't like me trading old original sheet metal for new repo's, but I plan to drive this truck and I know how hard it is to keep rust from returning. I also had a pretty funny moment today when my new neighbor (moving in today) knocked on the door and asked my wife if the truck was for sale. Unbelievably, she said no before I could even see who was at the door. He told me that he'd ask me again in 6 months if I haven't done anything with it. |
Re: Finally, a 72 for me!
:cong: on a nice find. Keep us updated on your new project. :metal:

I was wondering if you thought the 72 doors wouldn't work. How bad are the doors that you have? are the bottums rusted out like most? its hard to find good doors around here. |

Re: Finally, a 72 for me!
Maybe it's just me and correct me if I am wrong but the spid sheet looks to be new like a reproduction. All the spid sheets I have ever seen had a different font. Just curios. Still can't wait to see your progress and good luck.
