88 crew cab 4x4 single wheel conversion with 02 Cummins/allison auto
Im new to the forum but I have been browsing it for years. I thought I would share my project and build.
Its an 88 chevy crew cab. It is a Wrangler Corporation conversion truck. It started life as a 2 wheel drive dually with a big block, auto trans. It’s in the process of a 4x4 single wheel conversion with a 2002 Cummins diesel and Allison automatic trans. I’m about half way into the build. Look for updates to get you up to speed on it in the next week or so. It is being built to the hilt with 2002 Cummins 12v Diesel (yes I said 2002 12v) and Allison auto. Dana 60 front with 4.56’s and a Dana track lock, 14 bolt rear with 4.56’s and a Detroit. Divorced NP205 with 1410 yokes. 12 inches of lift and 38” tires. http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/a...v/8d154ef9.jpg http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/a...1328830437.jpg http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/a...1328830403.jpg |
Re: 88 crew cab 4x4 single wheel conversion with 02 Cummins/allison auto
I wanted a 4x4 crew cab but could not find one that was not a pile of **** so after a couple of years I ran across this clean 2 wheel drive crew, and the project began. I stripped out all of the front suspension along with all of the big block and trans. i started selling parts and collecting the things I needed slowly since this is a budget build, as much as a custom truck can be. I found a frame and cut off all of the 4x4 front end parts to use. the truck did not sit level with the weight of the Cummins so I decided to build custom hangers and shackles. I used half inch plate to build the hangers and made them an
1" ¾ longer. and i made the shackles 1" 3/4 longer as well http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/a...1328830080.jpg http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/a...1328830171.jpg http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/a...1328829997.jpg |
Re: 88 crew cab 4x4 single wheel conversion with 02 Cummins/allison auto
Looks good......I want that interior for mine....especially the rear seat.

Re: 88 crew cab 4x4 single wheel conversion with 02 Cummins/allison auto
Tacked in place, still need to gusset to the face of the frame and finish welding it in.

Re: 88 crew cab 4x4 single wheel conversion with 02 Cummins/allison auto
After I got my lift installed, I noticed a big problem I did not foresee. Im using 8” rear springs and a 4 inch shackle flip for my 12” in the rear. The 2 wheel drive spring hangers on the rear are shorter than the 4x4 version, this caused my shackle flip to roll the springs and axle forward to an undesirable angle and short me out of several inches of lift. I got the new hangers and will get them installed with update pic’s as soon as this cold weather breaks.
Bear with me, this is going to be a slow build as the truck is too large to fit in a garage with heat. |
Re: 88 crew cab 4x4 single wheel conversion with 02 Cummins/allison auto
I hear that about the trucks being toooo big I had to take my cab of my frame just to get my truck in the garage just so I could get the rolling chasis in my garage. I have to re-assemble it outside.

Re: 88 crew cab 4x4 single wheel conversion with 02 Cummins/allison auto
Well, I have this thing that a realtor called an oversize 2 car garage, that after I got all my shop tools in it. And a beer fridge and deep freeze. I would be lucky to get a geo metro in lol

what kind of allison are you using the 1000 or what

Re: 88 crew cab 4x4 single wheel conversion with 02 Cummins/allison auto
Well the original plan was a 6 speed Allison 1000 but I'm still waiting for a stand alone controller. So I guess for now I'm sticking A 545 ( I know it's a crap trans with no lockup or overdrive) but at least I'll be able to drive it till a stand alone is available

Re: 88 crew cab 4x4 single wheel conversion with 02 Cummins/allison auto
I did 6 inches of lift by springs with the added leaf to the front for the cummins. I also did a 1 inch body lift for a bit more room under the cab for the tranny. With the 6 inches The 37s fit great. I also have 4.56 gears and they need to be closer to 3.72. Top speed is 83 MPH with an NV4500.

It was probably a 5 speed Allison 1000. A couple places make the 5 speed controllers

How do you have a 2002 12v? Just wondering, i thought they ended in 1998.

I knew it was only a matter of time before some one asked. Thanks for not trying to tell me I had a 24v vp44 motor like most people, lol Posted via Mobile Device |

Shackle flip with 2 wheel drive spring hangers is a no go. Since im going to have to use the 4 speed Allison I have, for now. I’m going to remove the flip and install my new 4x4 hangers with 8” springs. I’m worried that I will have to use a 3 inch body lift to fit the trans without serious firewall and tunnel modifications. I dont want to do all that work to put a different trans in down the road. At that point ill just install my flip and 12 inch front springs and remove the body lift. |
Re: 88 crew cab 4x4 single wheel conversion with 02 Cummins/allison auto
Awesome project. You have good taste in trucks, engines, and transmissions! I would definitely hold out for the 6spd allison. The .61 OD is awesome if you like to tote the mail on the highway. My 06 DMAX / 6spd Allison / 3.73s / 33s will run 1800rpm at 80mph! I think 2100rmp is 90mph. Good luck with the build!

Re: 88 crew cab 4x4 single wheel conversion with 02 Cummins/allison auto
Thanks, been building this truck for years in my head and on paper just finally get to put it together. I did the calculation on 4.56 and 37" tires with the .61 ood and it works out great for the Cummins power band and fuel milage.

Re: 88 crew cab 4x4 single wheel conversion with 02 Cummins/allison auto
last time i checked there is no stand alone for 6 speed just the 5

Re: 88 crew cab 4x4 single wheel conversion with 02 Cummins/allison auto
you could use a 4l80e or the dodge overdrive too.
|
Re: 88 crew cab 4x4 single wheel conversion with 02 Cummins/allison auto
4l80E and cummins is a bad idea and I could use a 47rh but I need the double od of the Allison to work my 4.56s at highway speeds

Re: 88 crew cab 4x4 single wheel conversion with 02 Cummins/allison auto
Great project! You can use a GM computer and wiring harness to use the Allison 6 speed. There's a guy in Mexico Mo that is doing one right now in a 78 Ford with a Perkins diesel. Dale is a great guy and will help you out with info if you'd want. I can get you his phone number.

Re: 88 crew cab 4x4 single wheel conversion with 02 Cummins/allison auto
Mexico is only about 20 minutes from me if you get up that way. I like to shift gears but need another OD in my 84 with Cummins/NV4500/4:56 gears

Re: 88 crew cab 4x4 single wheel conversion with 02 Cummins/allison auto
A built 80e will hold a pretty mean cummins actually not really enough overdrive though. You can do the suncoast 6 speed conversion to the 5 speed. It ain't cheap. What about a newer dodge trans I've not fooled with one but there 6 speed and hand in hand in strength as the Allison. Since I'm a dmax owner I'm not as keen on dodges.

Re: 88 crew cab 4x4 single wheel conversion with 02 Cummins/allison auto
80e or the 47 with a gear vendors is another option cost is about same as Allison with stand alone though.

Re: 88 crew cab 4x4 single wheel conversion with 02 Cummins/allison auto
As for using tcm from the gm truck idk how it would work without pcm from a gm and bcm to. It requires input from the pcm to work and the bcm to control like tow haul and all.

As for the sun coast 6 speed kit, it still requires the six speed controller, your better of just starting with a newer 6 speed its cheaper. The new 6 speed dodge is too new for me to mess with because of lack aftermarket support at this time, also it requires a standalone Quote:

Please read ALL of my posts and do not overlap topics I have already covered, I would like to keep my build thread exactly that, and not a discussion forum. Thanks. |
Re: 88 crew cab 4x4 single wheel conversion with 02 Cummins/allison auto
I was going to add some info about the GV unit, but you already have your mind made about them............. Carry on. Good luck keeping that 545 in there with much power. I've seen 353 non turbo detroits kill them with ease. PM me for Dale's number when you're ready.

got my tires and wheels in today. http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/a...1332514226.jpg I’m happy with the lift and tires size, looks just about right. after i get the Cummins and Allison it its going to settle a couple inches or so, but i still need to install a 2 inch body lift to clear my sae bell housing so it should sit about where it is now. |
Re: 88 crew cab 4x4 single wheel conversion with 02 Cummins/allison auto
Please tell me you're keeping the air horns, visor, cab lights, and if there is a god the awesome striped paint!! :)
