Who has side exhaust?

I'm thinking of re-doing my exhaust, and having my exhaust come out in front of the rear tires.

Right now I have mid-length headers, with an x-pipe and 2 Pypes Violator mufflers......and I have it dumping over the rear axles.

Can I keep the x-pipe, or do I need to run just straight pipes, and a smaller muffler to be able to do this?

I have looked at maybe cherry bomb glasspacks or something along that style to try and make it fit.

So any help, what you run now, what you have run would be great!
And pics of course.....

Thanks

Chad

My 63 has cherry bombs and dumps out in front of the tires. I don't have an x pipe, but I think it would fit fine. It dumps out quick enough that out may not matter. When I go through a drive through I have to shut it down because all they hear is the exhaust.

Re: Who has side exhaust?

i guess it depends on what you do with the truck also. I have had trucks that dumped in front of the tires and ya it sounded cool and was plenty loud i wouldnt do it on a daily driver again. if it was just a weekend cruiser then ya. as far as mufflers go keeping the x pipe might limit you on what you can use in a big way especially on a short box depending on how far tucked under the truck you want them. i would go straight pipe myself maybe put an H in it somewhere and go with it.

Re: Who has side exhaust?

I run 2.5" striaght to 2.5x18" magnaflow resonators (not mufflers), then right out the step.
Its loud, it does drone on the highway, and the position of the tips blows noise and hot air RIGHT into the window of most passenger cars. Perfect.

I plan on using a rectangle exit but do not have them made at this point. I think Borla or mega flow has a few system that you could get some ideas from

Look into the Gen 4 Camaro tips. They are the shape your looking for.

Re: Who has side exhaust?

Are your mufflers in between or on the outside of your frame rails and if they are in between how do you get around your truck arms in the rear? I have a 62 and it seems like the only way for me to run my exhaust in front of the tire is to put the mufflers under the doors. But I am worried that that will cause two much noise inside the cab.

I'm planning for 3" side exit exhaust for my '66. Will be running it through the crossmember and frame for more ground clearance. I won't have room for over-the-axle pipes with the frame bracing that will eventually be welded in.

Re: Who has side exhaust?

Thanks guys, I'm not going to use this as a daily driver, so dumping in front of the tires is not a big deal for me.
I thought about trying to find some dual exhaust tips to put on it, I have seen a truck somewhere with that and it looked pretty cool.

Right now my exhaust is inside the frame rails also, so I might have to move it to outside to do this....

Three-inch exhaust to the outside of the frame, turn-outs in front of the rear tires...muffler mounted behind the cab. The exhaust is positioned above the bottom of the frame rails behind the front shocks...

That looks like a pretty big hole you will be making in your frame rails. I think the outside the frame route would be easier and safer.

The frame rail and crossmember will be boxed and also peice of thick wall 4" tubing welded in for the exhaust to pass through to strengthen the area. I've seen a couple other trucks with thru/frame exhaust, one of them being the Hotchkis C10.

Yea, a little. The V6 has a unique sound though and we don't find it all that unpleasant. ;)

Mine comes to an X near the end of the tranny then goes out at almost 45* angle infront of the rear tires. The mufflers are after the X and inside the frame. I dont have a true X pipe, but they are side by side there.

This is how I did mine. I'm gonna weld some plates
On the inside just to strengthen it more. I am a certified welder so I'm not worried about mine not being strong enough.

We just did a burb the same way (2 1/4" in and out of Magnaflows)...good sound, good clearance, above the frame rails for the most part.

So y'all don't want it to be loud in your cab, but a few of you actively want to deafen people in their cars. When you go to a public restroom, do you deliberately piss all over the seat too?

I do like the idea of coming out the side just to reduce the complexity and the weight swinging on the exhaust. But I don't want to be another jerk pissing in the sonic pool.

I just had my exhaust rerouted from coming out the side right in front of the back tire to dumping out rearward behind the back tire. It is much quieter but sometimes I do miss pissing on the seat.

I live on a busy road by an elementary school and the dumbest, loudest stuff is always roaring by, and it sucks. Stuff like Caddilac CTC's with cut outs. Late model supercars with some kind of snarling Borla bulls%&#! on them, desil pick ups with a sewer pipe outlet, and it's like, "Dude, who are you trying to impress winding your garbage up to 4k in a school zone,.... your child's 10 year old peers?" Ok...I'll get off my "old guy" soapbox now, but it does take me back to the days of VW bugs with "stinger pipes"

In my neighborhood it is mostly BMW’s with that snap crackle pop exhaust and that vibrating mettle sound. I think that they think it sounds like a race car but to me it sounds like a vehicle with an ill suited exhaust.

I also laid it out to the Side, both Pipes to the left, with normal turbo mufflers, maybe not what you mean, but a suggestion.
Meanwhile I like it more subtle, nice V8 sound, but quiet

I'm curious how you think 3ft of tail pipe is going to quiet down the exhaust more than say muffler choice? I mean I get the idea of not making it deafening but at same time like 99% of trucks come with the OEM exhaust exiting one of the sides just behind the wheel instead of in front, and the pipe itself is going to have very little effect on volume.

bigmoe 05-23-2022 12:11 PM

Re: Who has side exhaust?

I ran my truck with just turndowns until I got it in for tail pipes. The tail pipes did quiet it some, especially the drone.

350TacoZilla 05-24-2022 06:18 PM

Re: Who has side exhaust?

In cab I'm sure it did but as for actual volume outside I doubt it made much of difference to DB levels. Big deal with in cab sound is getting the ends the furthest from you and pointed away from you basically.

88Stanger 05-25-2022 02:58 PM

Re: Who has side exhaust?

I have side exhaust on my "69. I have flow masters and side exit before the rear tire. Obviously it is louder inside the cab then would be a rear exit, but I went into knowing this and I accepted this. With that said, do what you want, what you like. Get as much info as you can on it, pro's and con's.... then do what you want, that is all that matters.
Just to be different I was looking at running my exhaust for my "66 up at an angle through the bed (45 degree angle up) just to be different. Lots of people had negative comments on this, some had good comments - neg and pos but in the end I will do what I want. I appreciate all those whom comment on it, as long as it is done in a positive way. Ya some may not like your idea and there is a way to be constructive with a comment but in the end it is your truck, your want, your choice.
